Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @RebelliousAngel, I do like what @CalmOwl has mentioned. There also isn’t any pressure to contact one of mental health services, I do hope though if it’s what you need you might be able to get in contact with someone when you’re ready 💚

Whats on for you later today? I hope you can get some rest tonight 🙏

Re: A lifetime of pain

hey @RebelliousAngel i'm sorry to hear that the thoughts were so loud, that must've been overwhelming. we care about you heaps, and we're always here for you. it's tricky figuring out what will be helpful for us in that moment, hey. good on you for reaching out here and trying to give things a go!

how are you holding up at the moment? 💙

Re: A lifetime of pain

@rav3n today is feeling challenging. Thoughts are still so loud and I'm not having any luck in drowning them out. Everything hurts and I feel hopeless.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel it's so understandable that things feel challenging right now. often those dark thoughts make it hard for us to see hope, but please know that it's there. it's hard to see, but it exists. sending you big hugs 💙

i'm also going to send you a quick email soon so keep an eye out for it 😊

Re: A lifetime of pain

Aww @RebelliousAngel I'm so sorry I haven't seen this until now. I had someone over yesterday evening and they stayed until nearly midnight 😮. Then work today.

Those days with loud thoughts suck. I know how hard it can be sometime for me to drown the thoughts out with distractions at times. I wish I had a good tip for it; if im in that strong a thought phase I usually require someone to talk to or to take me out somewhere to physically distract me with interaction. Even if I try to do it myself im still stuck with those thoughts (eg if I tried going to a cafe or a walk, etc).

What did today look life for you?

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself it's ok. I have not been able to get on much to talk to anyone.

I cannot get rid of the dark thoughts and I'm not sure what to do, if anything they are getting louder and stronger.

Today I laid on my lounge, cried and had a small nap.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel I'm not sure if its my poor memory or because (as I recall and respect) your privacy you may not have said - I can't remember your situation re: triggers or reasons behind the thoughts (or perhaps not sure what are driving them but theyre just there? Mine can be abit like this at times).

I do remember though discussing with you about how your experience and feelings and struggles are valid and important - and I do not consider them "in comparison to others". Please know i am NOT asking from that perspective; I just have a lousy memory lately. 🫣

E.g.

do you feel not worth the effort of people to support/help you?

Do you feel there will never be a treatment to help improve how you feel?

Do you not see a purpose/reason (motivation) to life?

Is there a specific incident that has triggered it?

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hi @AuntGlow thanks 🩵.

I don't know how to answer that question as I am finding it hard to think clearly.

I appreciate the support from everyone here although I don't see how I'm worthy of it.

Re: A lifetime of pain

You are as worthy as anyone else is @RebelliousAngel . 😊 there is nothing that makes you less worthy.

And we are all here by choice (whether as members or staff) and choosing to help support each other because we see the value in it. 🥰

What do animals do to be worth saving and giving a new home?

Nothing - its just innate in the fact that they exist and are alive and feel.
