Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

Re: A lifetime of pain

After many days of feeling out of sorts and facing thoughts that are far from ideal I took the step to reach out for support recognising that I was at a critical point. I was met with rejection and judgement from the services I made contact with and regret my decision of trying to seek help. This is why I stay quiet, why I choose to suffer in silence and why I have so little faith in humanity. In this instance reaching out has only caused further damage and left me on edge and feeling unstable.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel oh dear, I am so sorry to hear your attempt to reach out for help was not well supported. *hugs*

Do you want to talk about it?

I am glad you are still posting here as a safer way to reach out, and hoping you feel/know you are not rejected here. 🥰

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hi @RebelliousAngel, I’ve been thinking of you. You showed great strength in reaching out knowing that you were at a critical point, I can feel your frustration and sadness of being let down when you were trying to reach out. I am sorry this has happened.

I know it takes a lot of effort to reach out when things are not going well and you showed great courage in doing that. Would there be any other services you have in mind that maybe be able to help you?

like @AlwaysMyself, here for support

Re: A lifetime of pain

i'm so sorry to hear about your recent experience @RebelliousAngel, it can be so disheartening with this happens. regardless of how they responded, i'm so proud of you for reaching out. that takes so much strength.

unfortunately it can be a hit or miss when reaching out - there are amazing people out there who will get you, but also, there are some who won't.

the forums community is still here for you, and i've got my fingers AND toes crossed that the next time you reach out, you'll be met with someone who does understand. sending you warm hugs 💙

@rav3n @Chasingsunsets @AlwaysMyself @AuntGlow what's one to do when they have lost the will to keep fighting, the will to live 😢.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Having a negative help-seeking experience can certainly create a barrier to giving this another try, but bouncing off of @rav3n's words, there are people out there who are ready to support you with compassion and understanding! This can be process, but we assure you that finding supports that foster a genuine connection with you is well worth it. The trial and error can be disheartening, but this is all part of the recovery process. You have already shown so much strength advocating for your needs, and we encourage you to keep going! We will share with you some mental health helplines here that you may like to explore, and it's okay to take some time to think on what services feel most suited to your needs.

And of course, we're all here for you too! Keep reaching out, and we're here to walk alongside you every step of the way.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel sorry I've only just seen your post (busy past 2 days). Big hugs to you, hun. I care, and Im sorry you're hurting and I wish I could magic it all away. I would if I could.

Do yoy think life *can* get better from where it is for you? What would need to change for life to be "livable" for you?

(Not sure if this helps you, but this is where i start with when I need to find a path forward on how to keep myself choosing to live -- what's is my goal that I can try to change? What is within my control?)

Can I ask what things/experience/etc in life cause you to consider it not worth living?

Re: A lifetime of pain

It sounds like these thoughts are weighing pretty heavily on you tonight @RebelliousAngel and its hard to see some of that light for moving forward. I can hear you are in a lot of pain right now and its understandable to not want to be in pain anymore. It can also be hard to find those slivers of light when our thoughts are telling us these things. You don’t have to sit with this alone thought and you deserve to be supported. I can share some helplines and supports below that you can reach out to tonight or when you are feeling like you need that extra support. Can you share with me some more information how you are keeping yourself safe tonight?

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @RebelliousAngel, you have been in my thoughts for quite some time, I hear how much pain you are feeling, you can pick yourself up from this I know you have done it before, I know when things get this bad we feel it won’t end however you are so close to the next steps to some improvements in how you are feeling, I know it’s hard to reach out in times like this but it appears like you need it the most right now, would you give suicide call back service a go? Or one of those helplines?

I know not everyone is helpful on some platforms but there is also some amazing people that work there too, we just have to find them even if it means calling a few times to speak with someone you feel comfortable with. You can do this 💚
