Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @rav3n my week has been alright. I've been avoiding everyone at the moment as I don't want to bring anyone down. My head space is a little scary recently.

How has your week been going?

Re: A lifetime of pain

it's nice to hear from you! @RebelliousAngel

i get what you mean, but please know that you aren't bringing us down. we all have our ups and downs, we'll be here for you through both times 💙

are you managing those scary thoughts okay? if you need help with reframing or just a distraction chat, etc., let us know!

my week's been alright so far! got back from my interstate trip and have a pile of luggage to sort through that i've been procrastinating 😅 maybe tonight's the night to get through it! what are you up to today?

Re: A lifetime of pain

@rav3n thanks. I do tend to shut down when things are bad due to trauma and being told to get over myself, that things aren't as bad as i make them out to be etc.

Not going to lie, those thoughts do get the better of me at times and things get dicey. I have the unhealthy coping strategy of SH which I rely on more than I care to admit.

Haha the procrastination, why is unpacking such a task though 🤣. Today I've become one with my lounge but I'm laying in silence.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @RebelliousAngel , I say the following in the hope to demonstrate that you are not alone in self-talk that tries to downplay your own needs importance in contrast to others.

My life could be considered "good" by many people, objectively. I have a steady job that pays very well per hour. I have stable and supportive family. I have no challenge with alcohol or drugs (and none of my family or friends do either). I have supportive steady friends. Most of the time there isn't anything distressing in my life.

So, why do I not want to live? Why am I supposedly depressed?

Because life isn't that black and white. Its not that simple.

I'm sure someone else in my situation that *could* experience positive emotions would cope quite well and normally in my shoes.

But I don't.

Its very easy and tempting for me not to reach out for help because "others have it worse" or "others cope worse than me" or "im not in crisis".

But if I do that, I do get worse.

If I reach out for help, I might not get worse.

If reaching out can help you, then I encourage you to do so. 😊 without comparison to others needs. Let someone else do the "triage" and just put forth what you need. 🥰

And you are always welcome to tag me. I will never think negatively of people asking for help even for minor issues or if theyre "better off than others". You are valuable and worth being supported.

Beautiful words @AlwaysMyself. 🥰

And they are right, @RebelliousAngel. Your feelings and experiences are valid, and you're allowed to ask for support whenever you need it.

You can always tag us, we will be here - no judgement, just compassion.

Big hugs to you both, you're amazing and we love having you around! 💖

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself thanks for this post and I thank you for the assurance that I'm not alone. I very much have a fear of being judged for reaching out and I'll sit in silence suffering rather than disturbing anyone. I recognise that I need support but to make that first move feels daunting.

@AuntGlow thanks 🩵. I feel out of it today, you know when things don't quite feel right?

Those hugs are very much appreciated 🩵

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel hearing you. my default response used to be to self-isolation too. now i'm starting to reach out to my psych more which is progress! it takes time, especially when 'reaching out' feels out of our comfort zone. you're definitely not alone 💙
