Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @RebelliousAngel

Each day is getting better after therapy last week, church today though so we'll see how triggered I get

In terms of the email, I was the same as you, I was terrified of getting in trouble again and so there are multiple times that I've kept my posting to a minimum.

Even just last week I got the email and I *dread* getting the email that I spiralled fast.

But as I have been told numerous times, it is not about banning you from the forums, they want you here, it's about making it safe for everyone.

The thing I get caught up on is "graphic detailed descriptions", the ambiguity of that statement is that graphic for someone else may be different to what graphic means for me, same with detailed.

The PSW's and mods are here to work WITH you, not against you, they will happily work with you to make something safe to post, because they do want you and everyone to contribute.

If there is *ever* something you think *might* breach the guidelines, you can email it to them first before you post it to the forums.

I know it feels like you're in trouble, and still every time I get the email, I feel like I'm in trouble. But truth is, you're not, all it means is that we need a little help to make it safe for everyone.

i know it's hard given what we've gone through, but our voices matter here, even when we get the emails.

💜

Re: A lifetime of pain

@avant-garde I am hoping that you were Ok after church today.

It is reassuring to discover that I am not the only one to receive the emails. It was the first time for me but like you I spiralled fast, it was bad as I had been in a bad place already and it felt as if I was being punished for my thoughts and feelings. I am aware that the workers did not mean for that in this case and they cannot control how it hit me.

It has made it hard for me to share for now as I am not sure if what I want to say is permitted or if it is going to get me in to trouble. I have RSD and I do not handle situations where I am made to feel punished or rejected.

I read a story not long ago on a different mental health platform about a user having been placed on pause or ban I am not sure what it was called for lengthy periods of time on many occasions. It seemed as if it was handled poorly and the user felt as if they had been targeted for being open and vulnerable. It hit hard to hear as it is the fear I have about losing such a space, I over think it and go to that worst case situation of what if that happened to me, I could not deal and I fear it would push me off the deep end.

I do understand the graphic detailed descriptions and it is hard to know what could be too much to share.

It seems as if this is a good platform and I know the team is there to offer support. It is hard when I am not accepted or liked where I am and I worry about that being the same here, what if one of the workers did not like me, would they single me out because of it to try to take this platform away from me. Sorry if this does not make sense, it is the things that go through my head.

Thanks for the response here, it does help to ease some of the fear. It has not been easy to open up and share given that many have tried to silence me. I am still learning that my voice matters but I do not think I will ever not feel as though I am trouble if I am to get an email again, but that is a me problem.

It was nice to hear from you, I am sorry that I have not been around, I do like chatting to you and I like that we relate to each other in many ways 🩵

@REDLINEZ750 Not sure I am living up to my name when I am fearful of getting in trouble 🤣.

My response to avant-garde I think is also appropriate to be said here so feel free to read that rather than me repeating it.

My music helps me and I am working at getting better.

I hope you have been well and thanks for the bible message, it was certainly fitting 🙂.

Re: A lifetime of pain

hey @RebelliousAngel

That makes perfect sense to me, thing is thats why your not going have this space taken from you same as me and others is because the moderators are there to protect us from that happening as wekk as from causing each other triggers.

they may err on the side of caution but if they do its ok, sort of protects even the platform itself.

if someone got in the position that could single someone out and ban them id say the act would be questioned as to why and that kind of mentality probably get spotted pretty quick even if did get through screening.

ive honestly been guilty of poking the beer sitting back and thinking how you like them apples hoping its seen before removed and all was good then while engaging sincerely and having good dialogue been wrapped across my one knuckle for not behaving so i have learnt to look at it like every single post of every thread is screened and thats a shit tonne of screening, its never personal they even finish by encoraging to continue contributing which is neat and made it hard to not hear amongst all the other noise.

still distresses me only not harmfully or as long now.

your right though and i resonate it being from fear of losing access to many people i havent met and look forward to spending time with each day knowing im accepted not judged.

thats you too my friend....

now im worried im banging on past making sense, hope ypur monday delivered kindness and if not create your own for being worth it

Just stopping by to check in and let you know that we all really care about you and love having you around @RebelliousAngel. I can completely understand why receiving an email from us would feel vulnerable, but please know we have the same guidelines for everyone, so you're absolutely never in trouble.

I am so glad you have this space to share what you're going through and it makes me smile to know you have made some beautiful friends here that you can connect with. @REDLINEZ750 @avant-garde @heartathome @Bunniekins @AlwaysMyself 💖

@RebelliousAngel

You know what really helped me recently?

They asked and implemented my suggestions.

After my spiralling breakdown and discussing the template and how it felt to me, @Jynx and I were discussing it and they asked for my suggestions. I got an email a few days later and @tyme wanted to see how my suggestions read

They heard me rebel, and I feel like getting the email, because let's face it, with me it is likely, it may just be easier.
