Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel every day you live is another is another day you've won the battle. 🥰

What would ypu get in trouble for?

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself I do not feel as though I am winning the battle. I am alive but do not feel as though I am living.

For not posting the correct way. I got emailed and warned. It is why I am keeping posting to a minimum as I am frightened of getting in trouble.

Re: A lifetime of pain

It may not feel like you are winning the battle, @RebelliousAngel , because the thoughts keep returning. But if every day is a battle, you are winning every day. Its just that the attacker keeps launching a new battle every day.

I wish there was a one-fits-all solution to keep the thoughts away. Could you discuss medication options that might help? Even if they are temporary aids. (I mention this because at times when I have had repetitive SI I have been prescribed an anti-psychotic that is also used for OCD treatment, in order to help alleviate the repetitive thoughts.)

Are there "environmental" (i.e. situations or events around you) that you think are causing/contributing to how you feel/think?

I wonder, if so, whether it would help if we brainstormed ideas on how some of those factors could be altered (or attempted to be altered)?

I know the mods/peers do need people to be a bit careful in how they post, especially regarding SI, to ensure others safety or not getting triggered if someone says they're planning to act, etc. I think almost every user who has been on the forums awhile will have had at least one of those emails. 😅🤭 myself included.

I don't feel its "getting in trouble" so much as them trying to ensure everyone will be safe (which does require some rules) reading the forums. Yeah sometimes I think it can be a bit strict on some topics/words used, but I accept that is their decision and it doesnt really affect my post to reword or sometimes omit a little.

But I do understand the feeling of "I can't post that, even though I wish I could say it to someone" -- I've been having that thought a bit yesterday too. Things I wish I could admit I thought, but I expect would raise too many alarms and be against the community guidelines. But I can "dance around the edges" in how I say something, or talk about the underlying thoughts/feelings that lead me to those worse thoughts.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself It is hard that the thoughts are persistent. I need a break from them but I am not getting it.

I have a long history with medications and due to that there currently is not any that I can take.

There is loads of environmental contributing factors here but I am unable to change those as I cannot control the behaviours of others.

I do understand the guidelines. It is hard for me to think when I am having thoughts though and things do not come out right. I get fearful of losing the forums so I try not to get in trouble.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel have they said you would be banned? Rather than just have posts withheld until edited?

Yeah, persistant thoughts are the shit. ☹️ I have days where I just cant get them out of my head and only in-person distraction can help - either have to call a friend to come over, or take myself to our 'safe haven' centre.

Sucks that you can't try medications to help alleviate it. ☹️ *hugs*

Can you distance yourself from the people that trigger the thoughts/feelings?

It might not apply for you, but in the past 1-2 years I was able to change my workplace (as it was a massive trigger) and my partner moved out (his behaviours were also a trigger). I still get chronic SI, but its less "crisis" exacerbated because I have removed those who frequently led me to SI from anger/injustice/etc.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself They said about an account pause. I do not know how it works.

I have distractions that I use, I am finding that they do not feel as effective lately though which frightens me. I keep trying though.

Thanks 🩵.

Distancing myself is possible, it can be for short times only though otherwise I get in more trouble.
