Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

(I wanted to post the previous message before continuing so you had something to begin reading and know I am here, whilst waiting for me to finish!) @RebelliousAngel

If i could take away what people had done, and make them face justice and accountability for their actions, I would do it in a heartbeat for you.

Unfortunately I can't, which sucks for us both.

However I can say I will walk this path by your side (from online). I dont expect you to immediately trust me on this, but I hope over time you will learn to: I promise to never intentionally hurt or offended you. And if I unintentionally do, I warmly invite you to safely let me know that I have, so that I can learn and apologise and adapt. 🥰

I wonder if there is a way I can help from afar to encourage you to rediscover and believe in your inherent value as a person. And see your worth for who you are. And perhaps also over time be able to perceive your strengths and positive attributes.

I think you are kind and caring. You are a compassionate listening to others and I have never read you say something rude to someone. You are considerate of others too from what I have seen. You are the type of person I am drawn to when considering friendships I sense.

A fun thought - in case it helps as a 1 minute distraction - if your brain is in a negative and contrary mood (my brain get this way sometimes 😅😅 not sure if others do lol) I can recommend the The Monkey’s Paw: Make a Wish, I Dare You ~ thread as a good use of contrary negative expression! 🤣 being able to spoil someone else's "wish" with a terrible condition is an artwork which can be put to good use there and humour! 😋

I feel it might be a "rebellious" thing to do 😋. @RebelliousAngel

If not, just disregard. It is 100% fine if this isnt your interest or not in your current mood. 😎

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself Thanks for being here and for the support 🩵.

I try hard to not believe the actions and words of those that have hurt me, I find it hard though, I've lived it for so long that it feels true, it feels as though I'm at fault.

The things you say feel kind and genuine but I'm wary of allowing myself to believe anything positive directed towards myself. I don't feel deserving of that kindness and I'm not sure how to accept it if I'm honest. Saying that almost hurts, to know that I can't accept someone's care for fear of being hurt for doing so. As though I'm going to be punished for accepting support.

Re: A lifetime of pain

That's OK @RebelliousAngel , you don't have to trust and accept it. It is always just sitting there if you would like to nibble it to try and test its safety though. 🥰

I can understand how it has become your belief and is so hard to see any other possible truth when it has been what you have been told for so long. And I am guessing also told to you by people who are "supposed to" care for you and protect you.

At one time in my life I felt used and "dirty" and worthless because someone saw it fit to abuse me. Thats how I saw it then, but over time I came to realise that actually the abuser was the person who was sick and had "dirty" behaviours, and it was their perception that they could treat someone that way that was incorrect. I slowly allowed myself to believe that someone else's actions don't change who *I* am. They reflect who *they* are.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself you would be 100% correct in that those things have been told by people that are "supposed" to care for and protect you. What kind of parent doesn't protect their child from such horrendous abuse but rather joins in on the shaming and competes for the position of who had it worst.

I'm sorry you had to experience abuse, know that you didn't deserve it and you are right that their actions reflect who "they" are and not who "you" are.

Re: A lifetime of pain

I'm sorry your parent(s) didnt protect you, and even worse involved and contributed to it. ☹️ there is no excuse for that from them. And just as my abusers actions dont reflect me, nor do your abusers reflect you.

One of the most powerful turning points in my life regarding processing my abuse was when a trusted elder male friend knelt down, held my hands, and looked me in the eye and told me how angry it made him feel that someone had done that to me, and how he wished he could apologise on behalf of men for the abuse done by some men. He was the first male I learned to trust, and he never hurt me or let me down (nor did his wife).

I hope one day you will also have an experience where you find someone who is genuine and earns your trust, respects and honours your trust, and helps you re-establish safety that sometimes some people can be trusted.

(By no means everyone!! And I am still careful who I trust with what, but just the belief that there are some people out there who are genuine and reliable in amongst the others who are not...)

It is ironic and sad that the people who were meant to be the safest (family) are statistically the most likely offenders (or complicit). I guess there is also elements of "access" and control that make children or siblings the "easy target". ☹️

I have been lucky that any friends I have disclosed my past abuse to has expressed their heartfelt sorrow and care. I have not had a friend question it or turn it against me. (My father has never been able to face it or reconcile what happened with his mental framework of his father. But he is the only person other than the abuser themselves who has ever questioned or denied that it happened.)

@AlwaysMyself I am very sorry but I have to tap out. I'm not handling things very well.

Re: A lifetime of pain

I'm glad you are putting yourself first @RebelliousAngel 😊. Take care.

I was about to tap out myself anyway as I need to get some sleep before I get up for work.

Hope you can also get some quality sleep tonight, and maybe feel a little less distressed tomorrow.

@AlwaysMyself @AuntGlow

I am fighting hard to get through the night. My body feels weary and my mind along with every inch of my soul is telling me to give in to the dark thoughts. How do I not cave to such loud thoughts, I cannot quieten them, God knows I've tried.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Good morning @RebelliousAngel - the sun has risen (on the east coast at least!)

I'm sorry you're still having those thoughts and feelings. I hope ypu can continue to be strong and brave and not act upon them - as you will no doubt already know, actions dont have to reflect our feelings, we can choose to act despite our feelings.

Do you think you would be able to get yourself out of the house for some type of (safe) self-care activity? Or just something to change the physical environment for a short bit? Or if not if a friend could come over (even if they dont know what thoughts you have, they could still be a distraction and company to help keep you safe today).

I will be heading off to work in about 15 minutes ☹️. *sigh*
