Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel It really sounds like you have had a difficult night. While I don’t know a lot about what dark thoughts are for you or what caving in to them means, I can hear that its really something you want to avoid. Its great you are reaching out to ask how do you not cave in to those loud thoughts. Because its so early in the morning and there might not be too many members around to offer ideas so I wanted to provide you some counselling lines in case you are needing them.

The sane support Centre will be open from 10am today. They have counsellors and peer support workers available to support you via phone 1800 187263 or webchat.

Meanwhile though, there was a big gap between when you said you weren’t handling things well and when you came back again for support. Did you manage to get some rest? @AuntGlow gave a nice reminder to be gentle with yourself when you can. I hope there were some moments of that.

Hi @AuntGlow I am unsure how to answer that question. I don't feel OK.

Thank you for letting me know @RebelliousAngel.

Let's just take things moment to moment, okay?

What are you sensing you need right now? 💛

@AuntGlow Ok. I am shaking and things don't feel normal.

Re: A lifetime of pain

This would be really overwhelming @RebelliousAngel... I am so sorry that things are feeling so big in your body. I can imagine that what you're really needing right now is to feel safe.

What is one thing you could do to get 1% closer to a sense of safety? It can be anything from having a warm shower to calling a helpline. 💛

Re: A lifetime of pain

hey @RebelliousAngel we're here with you, you're not alone 💙

do you want take some deep breaths with me? i saw this breathing tool from The Physiological Sigh that i'm going to copy here:

  • 2 sharp inhales through your nose (feel your belly expand)
  • 1 long, slow exhale through your mouth

repeat as many times as you need. i'm inhaling and exhaling too.

sometimes the shaky feeling gets worse if i haven't eaten enough/drank enough water. if you feel that resonates with you, would you be able to grab a snack or some water (maybe tea/hot choc, whatever you like) ?

sending you gentle hugs 💙

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AuntGlow I am working on keeping connected here. I don't feel connected to reality. I do not know what is going on, it is scary.

Hi @rav3n

Thanks for sharing that. I will give it a go.

I have had food and water today so I don't think it's that.

Thanks to you both for being here. Those hugs are appreciated 🩵
