Something’s not right

Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

Not sure how to say what I want so im just going to start. Was raised in a loving family, very Catholic and Labor. Priests and such were regular visitors. After one such man wouldn't leave me alone I threatened to tell. Afterall I had plenty of support. But I was presented with a picture of hell and told that any member of my family would go there if I did tell. My dad was very sick and in hospital and being there with him by myself I explained that I didn't like this guy. He said he'd fix it when he got home. That night an ulcer burst in his stomach and he died while being flown to a major hospital. My 9yr old brain knew that, not only had I killed my dad but I'd sent him to hell. The next day this priest began serialistic and ritualistic abuse. He'd made his point.

In my adult mind I know that I had nothing to do with dad's death but the doubt still remains. Studying child psychology in my teaching degree showed me theoretical view points but....and the buts continue.

Abuse doesn't just take away the obvious. I've lost faith, and cofidence, family, friends and I always come to the conclusion that it's my fault. Theory, as I said tells me no but my mind is often stronger and days like today, after months of no sleep because I'm scared to close my eyes for fear of what my subconcious will let in, leaves me exhausted, physically and mentally.

This is my 50th year...NOTHING to celebrate, only to mourn.

@Baileyboy This is a really difficult conversation to have - not just for you but for so many others - including myself. In saying that I want to let you know a few things that are fact:

1. None of it was your fault and you are in no way to blame

2. You have much to celebrate - you have survived 50 years ...and a teaching degree

3. You have openly and honestly layed your heart out here and that takes both courage and strength - more things to Celebrate.

4. The fears that you describe are shared by so many survivors of abuse - the nightmares, the flashbacks - what both our conscious and subconscious mind let in...

5. You are not alone..

6. I am listening...

Take care @Baileyboy

Re: Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

@Zoe7 thanks for pointing out reasons to celebrate. Some days it takes time to see the glass is half full.

Yeah, have a teaching degree, passed with distinction. However mum had a stroke the next year and I looked after her until she passed when I was 26. Would never have given up this time with her! So, only some casual work to speak of. And now I care for my sister who suffers with depression and anxiety along with a few physical issues to boot. My counsellor tells me I shouldn't be giving up my life for someone else, but that's really not something I can look at.

Funny thing...the other day I told my sister that she could put me on the market. Afterall not many people have an alarm clock that cooks and cleans..ha.. it's a full time job though so dealing with my own stuff has to get in line. @utopia suggested that we need to take care of ourselves first but first never gets here.

My own issues sneak up on me. Day may seem fine and then night hits and wham! Luckily I have my dog to talk to. Apso luckily, he can't speak or I would really be in trouble. Difficult conversations, alright. Does seem like this forum might just lend an empathetic ear, which is not part of my life at the moment! So thanks for listening. You can be surrounded by lots of people and still feel truly alone.

Re: Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

Hi there @Baileyboy,

Wow you sound like you are incredibly empathic and caring, if only there were more poeple as self-less as you, I hope you know that and celebrate that, it's rare that people express their love and care in this way.

Also, it does sound like this care that you have for others really creates meaning and some kind of fulfillment in your life, as you have managed to do wonderful things career wise but still found yourself back caring for those you love. It can be hard being this self-less so make sure you give yourself time to care for yourself and talk, which I am glad the forums help with that, we are listening and here for you, keep sharing 🙂

Re: Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

@Baileyboy I will just 'ditto' everything @Former-Member just said -she beat me to it - think she is secretly stalking me today lol

So much of what you wrote @Baileyboy I could have written also - and for that matter - many others on here. This truly is the most wonderfully supportive and caring communtiy - or as we like to call everyone - our 'forum family'. It is a safe place to just BE or to participate - there is no pressure and no judgement to be anything or anyone other than who you are. ...and probably the most important thing is to know that YOU MATTER and you will be heard.

There does come times where members will 'step away' from a conversation - that is for self-care and self protection - and conversations may be avoided for the same reasons. I am learning to do this more and more. And there is also a lot of heartfelt honesty here - so you fit right in!

The hardest parts of each day for me are the nights also - I have had many really, really difficult nights and have had my head held above water by so many people on here - so you are not alone with that struggle - and yes, it does hit quickly and it does hit hard - I am walking with you on that one.

I also have a little furball called Toby who doesn't leave my side wherever I go - and just like you I am glad he can't speak - but he is so close to me and so loyal that even if he could I don't think he would say anything to anyone - he is too protective of me. He has literally been my 'lifeline' on a few nights when I would not be here if I hadn't had him by my side.

...and yes you can be surrounded by people and still feel so alone - that is however not the case here - the magic that exists within the forum is that nobody is alone and we are all here for each other - walking alongside and holding each other up when needed.

So welcome to the 'forum family' @Baileyboy - I hope you find you voice here and feel alittle less alone.

Re: Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

Sorry I fell asleep for a while today and am only just catching up on the posts.
@Baileyboy. Let me just start by saying what an absolutely sh** thing to have happened to you. I am truly sorry that this so called 'man' - hurt you so badly. Both physically emotionally and mentally.
Personally I don't believe in Hell. But if there is one - I hope this fella is suffering the worst of it. I'm sorry but I get so emotional and angry about childhood abuse - especially by priests. My old friend suffered as you did.
You can read all the literature and see the logic. But your brain has been stuck as a nine year old - with regard to this trauma. That's why the subconscious likes to 'say' - it's your fault. You know it's not and we know it's not. But that 9 year old boy - he can't believe that yet. But overtime and with help - that 9 year old little boy will start to heal. I truly believe that.
As others have said here, you show the better side of humanity - caring, empathy & sensitivity. They are such important traits to have in this world.
Your sister is very lucky to have you - & you her. I think you could go for top dollar on the open market.
Sending a hug to you and to your 9 year old self.♥♥

@utopia@Zoe7@Former-Member

I guess if I finally talk about catholic abuse issues, like a miscarriage in the middle of the night at 16yrs old and disposal of it you will all need to know, maybe, I was and still am the 9yr old little girl...We also were taken advantage by the Catholic church and their members.

Feel embarrassed now. Is it worse for a boy?

Re: Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

No need to feel embarrassed @Baileyboy that is the benefit of an anonymous forum is that you can share anything and no one knows who you are and no one can judge. I am so sorry you have gone through those horrible things and taken advantage of, that is in no way okay and couldn't be any further from being your fault. You were young and hence vulnerable, thinking of you and so glad you are finding some support here.

Re: Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

@Baileyboy, no its equally as destructive for girls as boys. I am continually horrified these slimy creeps think they have the right to decieve and rape people, even children. I'm not a Catholic but I am Christian and I know the true head of the church taught the opposite to what you learned by these 'evil' men hiding behind falsehood 'wolves in sheep's clothing' I'm embarrassed for God, this was not His doing and like most struggle why he doesn't strike the dead with lightening built before the harm a single soul. Its not just in the church, but all over the world. The Church are judged before the world because they have breeched their own rules. The Royal Commission has exposed so many individuals and institutions and victims impact. Its just vile and disgusting and I'm so sorry it messed with your head and heart at such a young age and vulnerable time. It upsets me beyond words. If I could line them all up and sh# 'm I would. In this case capital punishment is a way to VALUE LIFE. these people are rarely rehabilitated and not one child is worth giving them a second chance - in my opinion.
Sorry, had a rant there. If I could pick up the beautiful 9yo old you I'd hold you till the hurt melted away, of at least until you realised this was not your fault and you deserve to be loved.
I'm not much older than you and its this time we think we're done and it will never be any different - fighting to enjoy life. So what I'm trying to do is spend time doing things that do feed my soil. Things that when I walk away I feel that little bit energised and glad to be alive. Not days like today where I can't get off the couch, but even today I'm mending (sewing) which is therapeutic.
Hope you have some things like this in your existence to create good moments among dark times, they keep us going.

Re: Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

@Baileyboy. I just assumed a 9 year old boy - not girl - based on your name here. I hope I didn't offend you.
Male or female. The trauma is the same. I think the only difference may be when it is same sex abuse - as that can lead to more confusion about gender, sexuality and the role of men. Abuse is abuse is abuse.

Re: Past has intruded in my present...AGAIN.

Hi @Baileyboy Hope reading and posting on the forum helps alleviate some of the loneliness that goes along with CSA. It is difficult to articulate.

I too am female but often identify with androgynous aspects of humanity.

I am sad reading your post, but also feel a strong resonance. My dad died when I was 11. if you have read my story, I am going to speak to the Royal Commission this year, not sure if you have contacted them.

The way children internalise aspects of their surroundings and take excessive responsibility .. through mistaken causal association is logical to our adult minds, but difficult to manage as life and death issues are prevalent in our psyches.

In my mind I had idealised Catholic Labour families .. as the lovely family I might have had if dad had not died, but it is just a fairy story, probably idealising him as well. Now I realise every soul and body faces a lot of challenge to simply get through life.

Taking Care of ourselves is very counter intuitive for me .. I learned to do it by taking care of others and then applying the logic to me, but wasting a lot of internal energy fighting with my right to receive anything.
