Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

I have multiple mental illnesses including Bipolar 2, cptsd, OCD, social anxiety. I’m also neurodivergent, ADHD and ASD. I already have tons of labels and a lot going on. I’m getting assessed for an ED on Monday during my psych appointment, I reckon I meet criteria so I am anticipating another diagnosis. I know it explains my how I’ve been feeling but it’s another label, I hate feeling so broken and feeling like I’m complicated. I know my disordered eating habits are adversely affecting my mental and physical health, I’ve just been in denial for so long and would also get defensive when people commented on my eating habits or asked about them.

Totally understandable that it feels daunting @creative_writer - I think wariness around being vulnerable with a stranger is a very human thing, and doubly so when we've been hurt in the past. Perhaps your first session can be focused on this very thing - your wariness, your past experiences, what's worked and what hasn't, for example. Trust your gut 😉

Yeah always a bit rough when the content we're studying feels oh so real. Sometimes it can be healing, sometimes overwhelming... Glad you've found some folks who you feel that like-mindedness with!! 😊

Hope your evening has been kind to you 💜

@Jynx first few sessions will be about rapport building. My history is probably too complex to cover in one session. It’s so helpful when a therapist is open to suggestions. I think it will help to communicate that I find talking about trauma details challenging. Therapy is a collaborative process, it would definitely help to talk about what works and doesn’t work. I don’t know if it’s a me thing, I don’t find myself drawn to CBT. Challenging thoughts can sometimes leave me feeling more confused.

Role playing a suicidal client is also weird even if the fake client’s backstory is very different to mine. I’m going to avoid too many similarities between my story and my fake client. We all need to create a fake client for role play practice.

I know there are ND folks in my course and it’s refreshing. I think many ND are able to pick up the neurospicyness in me even without me saying anything.

I’ve been exhausted this evening and have been winding down. I am not as low as earlier today, but not great either. Some improvement is still better than nothing. How has your day been? 💖

@creative_writer I don't think that's just a 'you' thing, I think there's a few factors at play - ND, complexity and trauma, individual differences in how an approach resonates, stuff like that. I know plenty of folks who aren't fond of CBT, and yet still find there's some principles in it that are helpful. Others swear by it, and others still will write it off entirely. Have you found any particular modality that seems to align more?

We had to do that in ASIST training - one of the things I found helpful was that after we did the role plays, we would take a moment to focus/reflect on the key things that set us apart from the role we played. It helped create a sort of mental distance and a way of stepping out of the character. Could be something to incorporate for yourself?

So true!! So often I feel like I can tell the neurospicy from a mile away haha. Do you think you'd like to connect with anyone outside of the study context?

Small improvements can make a massive difference, both in the moment, and in the long run! My day was okay, just went to get a blood test done and trying not to think about the mountain of dishes waiting for me 😅

Hope you're able to settle and get some good sleepies 😉💜

@Jynx some CBT principles can be useful but it is too simplified. Repeatedly challenging may thoughts is exhausting, and the intensity of the thoughts doesn’t really diminish all that much. Maybe I need to do deeper work.

I think reflecting on differences will help. I’ve always tried to create a client who is different from me and has a less complex history.

I used to be less open about my neurospicyness. I only mentioned it after I became more comfortable on the forums. I think I used to be in denial because I wanted to not be different. I don’t know if you remember the days I was guarded. I have trauma from growing up in a NT world as someone who was too neurospicy.

I do think once I become more comfortable it’ll be easier to connect with others outside of the study environment.

I hope you were able to take it slowly with the dishes. When I go to the pathology for a blood test, the lady tells me to rest and not do housework 😂. I feel weak from blood test days.

I hope you are able to rest up last night 💖

Had an appointment with my pdoc today, it left me feeling shattered. It was heavy talking about what I wanted to avoid

@AlwaysMyself you mentioned you were learning Auslan, how is it going?

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

Hi @creative_writer , I have soo many thoughts on CBT and its range of effectiveness for different people and different situations! I think CBT has helped me in “reframing”, but because I didn’t act on my feelings the most common parts of CBT ‘effectiveness’ just did not apply to me. And thus 100% with you on the “its exhausting!” because CBT by itself does not take away the thoughts or feelings. But I find for myself it has helped me be able to stop getting into a spiral of negative self-talk / self-beliefs. However most of the time my thoughts are too logical and trying to “reframe” or examining the “evidence” behind my thoughts actually make it worse.

Auslan is going slowly lol. I have completed all the assessments I can so far, and have a half-day of realtime assessments next week. Then I wait for all of them to be reviewed & marked, and see whether or not I need to resit any of them. I am doing a “recognition of prior learning” pathway, so it’s assessments for existing language fluency plus submission of theory assessments (which I may or may not already know the content for - but either way requires references so I have to look up written sources as I can’t just use “ahh… because it’s common topic to discuss in the community, so I have learned about it from Deaf…??” 🤣).

Sorry to hear it’s been such a hard day or two for you. The studies and then also the pdoc today. Is it something you’d like to chat about?

@AlwaysMyself I find CBT to be a mixed bag, it can be useful but also not useful. Intellectualising emotions may work for a while, but I end up hitting walls and feeling confused. It can also feel invalidating at times. I gaslighted myself into feeling better in the past and it helped till it didn't.

I hope your assessment go smoothly for you. I feel like theory based assessment can feel too theoretical and minimises the experience of lived experience.

I'm still trying to bounce back. I went for a walk because my mind felt too loud. Maybe I needed to talk to my pdoc about SA, but it felt so draining mentally and physically. I felt completely shattered and emotional afterwards. The repetitive thoughts of SA were increasing the intensity of SI. Additionally, learning about SI in class just reminded me of the thoughts I was already having. I don't have any classes next week and can take it a bit easier. I think we have also finished up on SI. I am currently safe rn. I am feeling torn between living and acting on urges.

Hi @creative_writer

Thank you for sharing, it sounds like this week has brought up a lot for you. I’m really glad you’re safe right now. I hear that torn feeling, and recognise how overwhelming that can be. You are deserving of care and support, if you feel it would be helpful-to have a chat, whether with someone you trust or have a chat on the phone with a helpline, there is support available. I’ve shared a few options below. No pressure, just sharing resources if helpful to you.

Lifeline

Suicide call back service

It sounds like you’ve been noticing and checking in with yourself, like going for a walk when your mind felt loud. It sounds like with everything happening, you are finding your way through it every moment reflects your resilience and light. I want to acknowledge that.

I hope with the week ahead, you have some rest, and that there’s room to move at your own pace, you are gentle with yourself and continue reaching out to connect.
