Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

I have multiple mental illnesses including Bipolar 2, cptsd, OCD, social anxiety. I’m also neurodivergent, ADHD and ASD. I already have tons of labels and a lot going on. I’m getting assessed for an ED on Monday during my psych appointment, I reckon I meet criteria so I am anticipating another diagnosis. I know it explains my how I’ve been feeling but it’s another label, I hate feeling so broken and feeling like I’m complicated. I know my disordered eating habits are adversely affecting my mental and physical health, I’ve just been in denial for so long and would also get defensive when people commented on my eating habits or asked about them.

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

Anyone else have any idea what else to do? I’ve tried meds (though my psych has suggested to get a full med review in her letter to my pdoc). I’ve been in therapy (though progress is a bit halted as my psych thinks my depression is too severe to make the maximum progress). Bipolar depression feels awful and I’m not sure what to do. It’s hard to lift even when engaging in activities that should bring more pleasure, feels like my brain circuits are damaged. Would be nice if I could do something and not get taken by heavy thoughts (I’m safe). The thoughts are super heavy, it’s not just passing thoughts. I have my psych appointment tomorrow

Hi @creative_writer

there are so many things happening right now and it's so good to keep exploring what is happening with your mind and body right now.

So good to get to your psychologist appointment tomorrow and have some further discussions about options for you moving forward. There are many strategies that can support you coping with the weight of these feelings and thoughts.

I am glad you have aid you are safe - keep reaching out for support and engagement, and remember to be kind to yourself and take a moment to breathe and reflect on any glimmers in your day - something small that made the weight lift a little.

@Mindee a lot is happening. My psych still wants me to consider an inpatient stay for med adjustment. I’ll wait and see what psychiatrist says.

I’m just staying safe bit by bit, but it’s hard when the pain feels heavy. I’ve made it safely so far today

Does anyone have any tips, still struggling right now.

Reached out for support, still ended up SH. Felt like I had to SH to resist SI. I know it’s not ideal, I don’t know what I’ve gotten myself into. I’m trying but I wish self care was enough to provide enough relief.

I’ve just been surviving lately. I know I need to wait for my next appointments with my supports, it feels like therapy is at a standstill because my purpose in life has become surviving, can’t seem to do much else

Hey @creative_writer I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling and that you feel like you're 'just surviving' right now. Thanks for letting us know you're safe - please don't hesitate to reach out to a crisis service if you find yourself struggling with the urges.

Have you had a look through our article on Self-care for Coping with Self-harm? I believe it's also called 'urge-surfing', i.e. finding ways to delay or distract from the urges, with the knowledge they will eventually pass.

What do you feel could be helpful from the community tonight hun? Your forums fam is here for you 💜

Part of the problem is I have convinced my brain I need to SH to resist SI. I need to do all that unlearning. I guess right now it's more about harm minimisation, might be difficult to stop it completely. I do try to delay and distract, I will look at the hyperlink and see if I can try anything else.

Right now I am looking to get ideas from others, it also helps to feel heard and have a safe place to vent.

@creative_writer sounds like a complex intertwining of the visceral and the narrative, which can definitely be tricky to navigate - especially when our thoughts are in conflict with our feelings. Have you brought this connection/narrative up with any of your supports? Could also be a good one to hash out with a helpline, even if it's just about bouncing some ideas around.

Since you're looking for ideas, I saw @AlwaysMyself talking about the 'dive reflex' in another thread, could also be something to explore!

It is really nice to see you hun, hope you can be gentle with your wonderful self tonight 💜

Hi @creative_writer

Glad @Jynx tagged me, even though it was either @Flutterbug9 or @Chasingsunsets who mentioned the "dive relfex" -- but i remember them mentioning it and that they sometimes use ice packs instead themselves.

I've often felt the urge for SH before too @creative_writer , and can understand the linkage between it being a substitute/prevention for SI urges, although i know it can also feel a bit different for all of us.

I hope you are able to get some support and ideas to test out to see what else might help as a "port of first call" to help break out of the SI feelings without SH. But as i say this, i am also not judging you at all for SH and totally understand the harm-minimisation perspective.

Sending you care. Let me know if you'd like to chat more?

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@Jynx I have briefly mentioned it in therapy, might need to explore it further. Might also help to reach out to helplines before acting on SH urges instead of afterwards. I’m also finding SH is starting to feel less adequate, and I know risk can spike if I keep going on with it. It’s like an addiction, it gets worse and riskier with time. I also live with a lot of anxiety of someone finding out in my family, it’s not a conversation I want to have.

I hope you had a gentle night yesterday💖. Feeling less germy this morning, I think the antibiotics kicked in. Hopefully getting over this infection will help with my mental state. I’ve been sick for 2-3 weeks, must have caught buggies when I was away.

@AlwaysMyself I feel like many of us self harm for different reasons and it’s different, but definitely lots of similarities. Right now I’m using it to cope with the intense SI I get on a daily basis. I know I need to find other ways. Constant SI day in and out is exhausting, my creative mind is on overdrive. I can stay safe for now, but it won’t be sustainable long term. I need to somehow de-escalate the thoughts. I will need to work through that with my supports.

I think harm minimisation approach puts the pressure off getting off SH completely. I know if I have the expectation that I need to stop and then I relapse, it’ll just make me frustrated. I guess right now all I can do is keep trying to fight urges and see if I can do anything to ease both SH and SI urges until I see my supports again
