Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

I have multiple mental illnesses including Bipolar 2, cptsd, OCD, social anxiety. I’m also neurodivergent, ADHD and ASD. I already have tons of labels and a lot going on. I’m getting assessed for an ED on Monday during my psych appointment, I reckon I meet criteria so I am anticipating another diagnosis. I know it explains my how I’ve been feeling but it’s another label, I hate feeling so broken and feeling like I’m complicated. I know my disordered eating habits are adversely affecting my mental and physical health, I’ve just been in denial for so long and would also get defensive when people commented on my eating habits or asked about them.

@AuntGlow it isn't easy to get appointments at this time of the year. People are often going away and many people also find this time of year challenging. I'll see my psych early in the new year. I also know there are helplines for in between support.

Considering a psych ward stay feels scary, I am honestly feeling super anxious about it. I've been taught not to trust the mental health system. I also have deep trust issues. I know it would be a private stay and will come with flexibility. It's a hard one to feel comfortable with. I think my parents' anxieties would be harder to control than my own.

I tried but feel like I failed. I guess all we can do is try. I've been able to resist other urges at the very least.

I will try prayer and breath work, maybe I need to place the pressure off myself for not being perfect. I'm struggling to slow down my nervous system and concentrate.

It is a really tough time of the year, isn't it? @creative_writer

I can hear you have a plan to see your psychologist and that you know helplines are there. Of course, you are always welcome here too. What else do you think you could add to your support toolkit?

I understand what you mean. Hmm, I am wondering if there are any other family members or friends who can hold an encouaging, regulated space for you to explore this idea?

You haven't failed at all. I think it's really human to go back to what is familiar many times throughout recovery - changing patterns of behaviour is really hard!! I think, if we give compassion a little more nourishing over shame, it can help most in these moments. I wonder if you can offer yourself this space tonight? For example, "maybe I need to place the pressure off myself for not being perfect." This would be such a wonderful way to be compassionate towards yourself.

Have you tried prayer and breathwork? 🫶

@AuntGlow I don’t do Christmas, so I don’t have that pressure. Though I do need to have a plan for when my supports are away. I know helplines and online forums can be great supports. Not sure what else to add. I don’t have many friends, I only really have one friend who I can talk to about MH stuff. I could talk to her. I have drifted apart from many people, don’t think I’m at the same wavelength as them so I let them go. I don’t really talk to family members about SI and SH.

Relapsing into old habits is hard. I know I’ve been able to get out of it before. I’m sure I carry lots of internalised shame for having these urges. I’ve been shamed for SHing and having SI.

Yes, I’ve taken some time for prayer and breath work.

I am curious - did you ever explore any support groups? And have you been able to revisit any of your writing groups? @creative_writer 🥰

I would encourage you to talk to this friend, if you can - I'd be interested to hear how the conversation goes and if it's helpful (if you feel okay sharing, of course).

It would feel really hard drifting away from old friends... I have been there. Would you ever reach out to reconnect?

What has helped you shift out of these bouts of SH and SI before?

I know that unshackling ourselves from shame is so incredibly hard and it takes time... I think any time you can put a hand on your heart and simply say, "I am here for you no matter what", you're doing the work to heal this shame. 🫶

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@AuntGlow I've been with the guided service. I haven't been joining the writing groups recently, I do want to get back into it, but I can't seem to get myself to attend.

I rather drift apart than stay in unfulfilling relationships, I am able to cope. I drifted apart a long time ago and I prefer it this way. I find many people are naturally uncomfortable with the uncomfortable, I don't like masking. I already mask with family.

A combination of things helped me shift away from SH and SI in the past. It's a combination of meds, therapy and just normal bipolar fluctuations.

TW: SH and SI

Content/trigger warning
I have self care, but I don't feel like I have what it takes to resist SH. I am safe and whatever I have done I've remained safe. I am really struggling to cope with constant SI. In the past I have used SH to cope with SI. I know it isn't healthy, but I feel lost. I've just grown so frustration with the chronic SI I've had for a month, I don't see it going away right now. It gets exhausting that I eventually got fed up and felt like I had to go back to unhealthy habits. I don't know what to do.

I know I need to learn to be kind towards myself, SI and SH often have so much shame attached to them. I also carry a lot of shame from trauma and just feeling ashamed that I'm struggling this much when I have so much in my life. I could try placing my hand on my heart and say kind words to myself.

hey there @creative_writer 😊

i wish there was a way i can erase all that shame you feel and take all that pain away. i can hear how hard and overwhelming it's been for you, and i know you're trying really hard to stay safe - really appreciate you letting us know. 💜

sounds like the pull towards the unhealthy habits are getting stronger, and you're wanting to find ways to stay away from that? the first thing i did was get rid of the access i had to these unhealthy tools (either chucking it away or giving it to a friend/someone you trust to hold onto). are there some other healthy/safe things you can replace the unhealthy behaviours with? How to help yourself if you self-harm | Support | Mind has some great tips for both immediate and long-term strategies. i particularly like the toolbox suggestions - curious to know what your toolbox would look like?

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@rav3n SI and SH are unfortunately still very stigmatised.

I could try limiting access further, I limit items in my bedroom but have found it difficult to get rid of everything. My brain can be creative in the wrong ways, but it better to limit items. I will have a look at the article you've attached.

Coping strategies include: prayer, breath work, grounding, writing, reading, watching TV, cute fur baby videos, music, helplines and forums, exercise and walks, warm showers and skincare.

it does suck that the stigma still exists, and i can see how it makes it harder to let go of that shame @creative_writer. i wonder if there are reframes/affirmations you can tell yourself to help shed some of that shame away?

the way i tried to let go of shame was by reminding myself that the guilt i feel doesn't help me move forward, instead it makes me fixate on the past more. it also helps to know that others have dealt with SH/SI too, and i'd never judge them poorly for it... so i try treat myself the same. it is easier said than done, but i hope you know it's possible 💗

love your toolbox!! cute fur baby videos are underrated, they always manage to put a smile on my face.

Re: Mixed feelings-might be getting another diagnosis (ED)

@rav3n I know many people struggle with mental illness, and I know people's views of it are skewed. I went to a lecture a few weeks back on mental health within my community. Speaker spoke about how stigma isn't fair and we really should be talking about mental health more openly. I find it frustrating that people pretend culture is religion.

I'm still trying, despite not seeing a way out right now.

It is definitely hard to provide yourself with the same kindness and compassion, it's been a journey for me. I don't think I am at the point of treating myself like I would treat a loved one. I guess we all have to start and it becomes easier with time and practice.

I love cute fur babies, I saw one today in our backyard. The kitty is bigger than she used to be I reckon she is an adolescent now. She let my mum give her head pats. She lives next door to us. Sometimes I take walks and I try to spot the kitties, we have lots of kitties in my area. Do you have any pets?

Have had an overwhelming day, hoping tomorrow is better. Struggling to sit with the big emotions, but I guess all you can do is try.
