Craft Central

Craft Central

Hello forumites! This is a new craft thread dedicated to all things craft, including knitting, diamond painting, crochet, cross stitch, mosaics, etc! Basically, anything crafty! I have found that crafts are great for mental health as it allows people to be creative and gives them a way to express themselves with different mediums and items, such as wool, paints, etc. It can also help regulate emotions and promote relaxation as well as being a great conversation starter!

Tagging @ENKELI @Shaz51 @Ru-bee @rav3n @Glisten @AuntGlow @tyme and all forum members interested in crafts. Feel free to post any craft projects you may like to share and any craft ideas, news, etc, you may have. I look forward to seeing what things are shared here!

I love knitting, crochet and cross stitch. I have knitted blankets, adults and kids jumpers and beanies for charity as well as myself and friends and have also done a cable knitted scarf in the past for a family friend which was both challenging yet enjoyable. I often have several knitting projects on the go and will knit when watching TV - something to help me focus and interested in the program, such as a simple blanket which only requires wool, needles and a tape measure with garter stitch being the stitch of choice. If I’m stressed or going through a rough period mentally, I find knitting a beanie or 2 to be a great way of handling this period as I can focus on the pattern and not whatever is causing me issues in my life. Knitting beanies for charity and blankets is a great way of using up leftover wool as I know they will be all diffferent yet unique and be able to keep people warm, especially here in Victoria where I’m based. I’ve been a knitter for over 40 years and love being creative with the colours of wool- acrylic mostly! I love knitting my own jumpers knowing that no one else will have the same jumper as me and being able to make it my own preferred length and style.

In terms of crochet, I can only do granny squares so I’ve been making squares and blankets for charity.

As for cross stitching, I started it over 20 years ago when I was at uni and have recently got back into the hobby. This clownfish is the start of a bookmark I started last night which I’m stitching to remind myself of when I saw a clownfish at the Cairns aquarium on my recent cruise ship holiday in June to the Great Barrier Reef.

I have started doing diamond painting as of February this year thanks to starting it at a PARCS complex as part of my mental health recovery journey which I really enjoyed and found to be calming, meditative and good for dealing with anxiety and stress. I’ve got a cat canvas on the go and have recently completed 3 bookmarks from Kmart last week when I was on a mental health retreat. Below is a coaster I completed a few months ago from a kit from Kmart.

Enjoy your crafting!

Re: Craft Central

I can relate to the yarn stash becoming a problem @Judi9877 in my case it's usually just not being able to resist buying beautiful yarns without having a project in mind, so then they just sit in my cupboard, waiting for me to find the right project that suits the quantity I bought. It's definitely not the best method but I have started to get a bit better about it!

I'd love to do a trip to Bendigo to check out the Woolen Mills. Maybe I'll have to plan a day trip soon! By the way I have just removed the specific date of your trip there, just to be cautious regarding anonymity.

I hope you can upload a photo of the sweater, I'd love to see!

I'm currently knitting my first pair of socks for myself. I've knit a pair for my dad and some newborn socks, so I'm excited to have my own!

@Judi9877 yes, wool is more delicate to wash but it's so hard to get woollen clothing these days. My mum knitted me a wool jumper in a beautiful pink colour and my friends' mum washed it, then ironed it as it was still wet and totally ruined it. She and I were both pretty peeved.

Your colour combination sounds amazing and I hope you post a photo or 2 when it's complete.

I have a wool cardigan from when I worked at Telstra, I got it second hand from a colleague and even though I left the big T in 2008 the cardigan is still in perfect condition and I refuse to part with it. It's dark blue with a small T logo on it so I can get away with wearing it.

I am starting another diamond painting, just can't decide which one to do!

The Diamond Art Painting I've finished recently. This one was pretty fun to do. You can become addicted real quick. I'm not quite addicted yet though!

Anybody else also diamond dotting?

Re: Craft Central

Hi everyone.

I have attempted many crafts over the years including; jewellery making, scrap booking and rock painting. I've now found fibre arts - something i can do in bed on a day where im well but not enough to get up - but I can also take with me.

I started crocheting for the 5th or 6th time when my chronic fatigue first became SEVERE almost 3 years ago. This time it stuck. I've made blankets and beanies, shopping bags and headbands - but my favorite is usable home wares - from face cloths and scrubs to oven mitts and hand towel toppers. I suck at getting items to be identical in size- but my quality is pretty high - i guess cos im slow.

This past winter I have started to learn knitting - and again the youtube tutorials have really helped.

Focussing on counting and repetitive movements can lead to some great mindfullness, and then the identifying patterns and repeats helps the adhd slow down. I love my stitch markers and have quite a collection of tools and yarn. Im trying to do no-spend for the rest of the year and am starting on my Christmas gifts.

As a begginner knitter following a KnitALong fir the Ranunculus sweater was a great achievement. I've since washed and worn this jumper (made with Alpaca wool which us quite pricey) and want to shorten the sleeves, but keep the longer cuffs....

Reminder to self: Its okay to restart your projects - as long as you take photos to remind yourself how much you've improved.

On worse days I jump onto the Facebook beginner groups and offer support where I can.

Re: Craft Central

@FearofUnknown hey there, my apologies for not responding earlier. I have only just come back to this thread and saw your message. I love your diamond painting.

I also diamond dot. I like how I can do it and not have to think. I like how I don't have to choose colours and the like as with colouring which I also do. I get anxious with choosing colours so don't colour as much as I'd like to.

I'll upload the next one I complete. I tend to go through stages where I'll do several paintings in a row, then I'll leave them for a while.

Re: Craft Central

@SweetMonster that jumper is beautiful. I absolutely love the colours.

I have never been able to knit or crochet. My mum and her 2 sisters used to be great at knitting so mum was disappointed when I didn't do so well in sewing class at school!

You have a gift my friend 🙂

Re: Craft Central

@ENKELI i have a love hate relationship with sewing.

Fun facts - to undo crochet (and bulk-knitting) its called FROGging... because you "rip it, rip it" and to undo knitting but in slow and steady (like a handful of stitches) the process is called TINKing. Because you are knitting each stitch off, in reverse.

There are some many pages, groups snd youtubes these days - and im always available to give supportive suggestions (it may take me some time but im usually around in the fb beginner groups)

Re: Craft Central

@Shaz51 it was so beautiful to work with. I love the yarns that have subtle colour changes like this. And alpaca is so soft ... it feels like a gentle hug when I wear it.

Re: Craft Central

@FearofUnknown Hey, I love diamond dot art! It's so relaxing and is a great distraction for me. I've gotten a few from Kmart. Do you know of any other cheap places to get them? I've seen a few in other stores but they're a lot more expensive. 🖊💎
