Craft Central

Craft Central

Hello forumites! This is a new craft thread dedicated to all things craft, including knitting, diamond painting, crochet, cross stitch, mosaics, etc! Basically, anything crafty! I have found that crafts are great for mental health as it allows people to be creative and gives them a way to express themselves with different mediums and items, such as wool, paints, etc. It can also help regulate emotions and promote relaxation as well as being a great conversation starter!

Tagging @ENKELI @Shaz51 @Ru-bee @rav3n @Glisten @AuntGlow @tyme and all forum members interested in crafts. Feel free to post any craft projects you may like to share and any craft ideas, news, etc, you may have. I look forward to seeing what things are shared here!

I love knitting, crochet and cross stitch. I have knitted blankets, adults and kids jumpers and beanies for charity as well as myself and friends and have also done a cable knitted scarf in the past for a family friend which was both challenging yet enjoyable. I often have several knitting projects on the go and will knit when watching TV - something to help me focus and interested in the program, such as a simple blanket which only requires wool, needles and a tape measure with garter stitch being the stitch of choice. If I’m stressed or going through a rough period mentally, I find knitting a beanie or 2 to be a great way of handling this period as I can focus on the pattern and not whatever is causing me issues in my life. Knitting beanies for charity and blankets is a great way of using up leftover wool as I know they will be all diffferent yet unique and be able to keep people warm, especially here in Victoria where I’m based. I’ve been a knitter for over 40 years and love being creative with the colours of wool- acrylic mostly! I love knitting my own jumpers knowing that no one else will have the same jumper as me and being able to make it my own preferred length and style.

In terms of crochet, I can only do granny squares so I’ve been making squares and blankets for charity.

As for cross stitching, I started it over 20 years ago when I was at uni and have recently got back into the hobby. This clownfish is the start of a bookmark I started last night which I’m stitching to remind myself of when I saw a clownfish at the Cairns aquarium on my recent cruise ship holiday in June to the Great Barrier Reef.

I have started doing diamond painting as of February this year thanks to starting it at a PARCS complex as part of my mental health recovery journey which I really enjoyed and found to be calming, meditative and good for dealing with anxiety and stress. I’ve got a cat canvas on the go and have recently completed 3 bookmarks from Kmart last week when I was on a mental health retreat. Below is a coaster I completed a few months ago from a kit from Kmart.

Enjoy your crafting!

Hello @Oaktree @Appleblossom @Shaz51 @FearofUnknown @tyme @rav3n @Ru-bee @heartathome @ENKELI and all craft lovers here. Great work on the craft scene!

@Oaktree I love your artworks! You are very talented! I respect and admire all people that can create and express themselves using artwork as a medium as I believe they are very creative and intelligent as well as very interesting. I believe that all artwork contains a message that the artists are trying to express and I like to try and understand the message, whether that be by what image they have drawn/created or the colours they have chosen or even the type of medium they have used to create the artwork such as paints or pencils. I’m not good at drawing and mostly just draw abstract designs when I want to be creative and express myself using pencils, textas and crayons. Art therapy is great in health settings and I’ve done a bit of it when I’ve been in mental health facilities which has helped to relax and focus on life other than my health issues. I’ll try and find a photo of my artwork and post it if I can.

The past week has been spent working on my clown fish cross stitch bookmark- now half completed- along with finishing a kids jumper using wool from Kmart on clearance. I’ve also been working on knitting a blanket whilst watching tv and another adult jumper for charity. Add to this, crocheting a granny square on Tuesday afternoon which I’ll add to my collection for a blanket and I guess you can say I’ve been busy creating and crafting. I’ll be working on knitting a simple blanket whilst watching sport on tv over the next few days as well. I did go to the Royal Melbourne Show yesterday and I had a look at the arts and crafts pavilion which prompted me to see some new ways with cross stitch designs and knitting projects, such as a gorgeous cable knitted blanket which looked very nice but a lot of hard work with the pattern that was used. It was a great break away from the usual show things and I’m glad I attended the pavilion.

Keep on crafting!

Re: Craft Central

@Oaktree @Judi9877 @Appleblossom @PeppyPatti @Shaz51 I am loving all the artwork you talented people are sharing.

I am just finishing off yet another diamond painting, the weather has turned from lovely and warm to wet and not warm so I am inside for the day instead of out getting some vitamin D.

I hope everyone is having a good Sunday xo

Hi @ENKELI @Oaktree @Appleblossom @PeppyPatti @Shaz51 @tyme @Ru-bee and all forumites here.

Thank you for sharing your artwork @Oaktree! I love your designs! I too can understand the weather factor and money issues and the benefits of having art and craft supplies available as something to do when going out isn’t an option. Both my housemate and I’ve purchased several diamond art kits - it’s a new hobby of mine and she’s been doing it for several years- so I’ve got a collection of them to do, especially after finding some cheap kits at the Reject Shop on clearance a few weeks ago. @ENKELI Maybe this is an option to see what kits are available? I’m a big person of now having so much wool that I don’t know what to do with it as there’s only so many jumpers, beanies and blankets I can knit and crochet. I will admit it does come in handy as I purchased some wool a few years ago from the Bendigo Woollen Mills back in a visit in 2022 and I found it last night so I’m going to finally knit myself a jumper with it after all these years and keep the jumper for myself. When I have an argument with my sister about my housing situation, she makes me panic by telling me to get rid of my wool stash so I start knitting like crazy to try and use some of it up or look at donating some of it - in my last move, I donated 5 large bags to several charities in my area as well as to an aged care facility. I also use my wool collection as a way of being creative and helping me with my mental health issues as I like the feeling of knitting an item for charity knowing that I’ll be able to keep a person warm whilst also giving me something to do.

Take care.

Re: Craft Central

@Judi9877 you know how you have all that wool? I have a large bag of diamond paintings I have purchased from various places, including the Reject Shop.

I have enough to last me into the next decade if not the next century! Every time I go into the Reject Shop I immediately go to the art section to see if there are any new diamond paintings and because I have so many I have often bought the same one twice. One pattern I bought three times. I ended up giving them to the local op shop.

Definitely knit yourself a jumper, I'd love to see it when you are making it. Will it be plain or are you going to have a pattern in it?

Re: Craft Central

Hi @ENKELI @rav3n @Oaktree @Appleblossom @PeppyPatti and all craft lovers here.

Thanks for replying @ENKELI @rav3n @Oaktree . My wool stash is a big problem for me in a bad way as I keep on buying it when I think I don’t have the colours I need for a certain item when in fact, I probably do but just can’t locate it. I can understand your dilemma of doubling up on diamond art kits @ENKELI as this has happened to both myself and my housemate with my housemate passing on her extra kits to me as I now enjoy the hobby!

As for the jumpers situation and the Bendigo wool, I’ve located enough wool to make 2 jumpers for myself - 8 balls- with an extra 2 balls I found that I’ll need to visit Bendigo to purchase 2 extra balls when I visit there for a holiday [next month [edited by moderator]. I’ll try and post a photo if the system allows soon. The first jumper I plan on knitting after I’ve completed the jumper for charity is red, blue, yellow and green in stripes using the Bendigo wool from my collection. It’s pure wool so it’s a bit more expensive than acrylic wool and I won’t be donating it to charity. The charity I knit for only likes acrylic wool due to being easy to wash and care for, unlike wool which takes more care to wash, etc. The other Bendigo wool for the 2nd jumper is a pale grey, purple, light blue and pink which I’ll knit using the same pattern sizing yet different pattern - possibly 1 colour each for the back, front and 2 sleeves. Either way, I’ll be prepared for next years cold weather or this years - I live in Victoria!- so I’ll be nice and warm yet stylish as well!

Take care.
