Craft Central

Craft Central

Hello forumites! This is a new craft thread dedicated to all things craft, including knitting, diamond painting, crochet, cross stitch, mosaics, etc! Basically, anything crafty! I have found that crafts are great for mental health as it allows people to be creative and gives them a way to express themselves with different mediums and items, such as wool, paints, etc. It can also help regulate emotions and promote relaxation as well as being a great conversation starter!

Tagging @ENKELI @Shaz51 @Ru-bee @rav3n @Glisten @AuntGlow @tyme and all forum members interested in crafts. Feel free to post any craft projects you may like to share and any craft ideas, news, etc, you may have. I look forward to seeing what things are shared here!

I love knitting, crochet and cross stitch. I have knitted blankets, adults and kids jumpers and beanies for charity as well as myself and friends and have also done a cable knitted scarf in the past for a family friend which was both challenging yet enjoyable. I often have several knitting projects on the go and will knit when watching TV - something to help me focus and interested in the program, such as a simple blanket which only requires wool, needles and a tape measure with garter stitch being the stitch of choice. If I’m stressed or going through a rough period mentally, I find knitting a beanie or 2 to be a great way of handling this period as I can focus on the pattern and not whatever is causing me issues in my life. Knitting beanies for charity and blankets is a great way of using up leftover wool as I know they will be all diffferent yet unique and be able to keep people warm, especially here in Victoria where I’m based. I’ve been a knitter for over 40 years and love being creative with the colours of wool- acrylic mostly! I love knitting my own jumpers knowing that no one else will have the same jumper as me and being able to make it my own preferred length and style.

In terms of crochet, I can only do granny squares so I’ve been making squares and blankets for charity.

As for cross stitching, I started it over 20 years ago when I was at uni and have recently got back into the hobby. This clownfish is the start of a bookmark I started last night which I’m stitching to remind myself of when I saw a clownfish at the Cairns aquarium on my recent cruise ship holiday in June to the Great Barrier Reef.

I have started doing diamond painting as of February this year thanks to starting it at a PARCS complex as part of my mental health recovery journey which I really enjoyed and found to be calming, meditative and good for dealing with anxiety and stress. I’ve got a cat canvas on the go and have recently completed 3 bookmarks from Kmart last week when I was on a mental health retreat. Below is a coaster I completed a few months ago from a kit from Kmart.

Enjoy your crafting!

Re: Craft Central

Wow @Captain24 you have been very busy. The mosaic look great. I especially like the hearts, as I am drawn to that shape for some reason.

I haven't done any diamond dots for a while, because of my mental health and lack of space. But I ordered one and it arrived last week. So I am looking forward to starting that.

Keep up the great creating.

Re: Craft Central

That looks awesome @ENKELI I haven't done one of these with the different sized dots as yet. It adds more depth to the picture.

Re: Craft Central

Wow @ENKELI they look amazing.

I also purchase my diamond dots from Temu or AliExpress @Judi9877 They are so much cheaper and the quality is fine. I haven't had any issues with any that I have finished.

Re: Craft Central

Thanks @Mustang67.

I appreciate your response. No one else did. I have also finished another 3D puzzle. I’ve been trying to get back into diamond art. I have one that I started many months ago and have it set up. I did a couple of hours on it a couple of weeks ago but haven’t touched it since. It’s the last photo of my eldest dog with mums last dog that we lost. It was taken a day before she grew her wings.

Re: Craft Central

@Captain24 That is so lovely, to do that to remember her by.

I did this one for my niece, as this is the type of cat she had. But unfortunately, by the time I finished it, her cat was bitten by a snake and passed away. She had her cat cremated and now has this next to the urn as a little shrine to her cat.

Re: Craft Central

That is so sad but really nice at the same time. @Mustang67. My last dog that died the local vet at the time is an artist and she drew a picture of honey and I have her on the wall in my main room. I also have mums other dog there as well as she drew her to. She doesn’t do commissions anymore so we couldn’t get mums last dog done but I did do a diamond art of her.

Re: Craft Central

@Captain24 that is awesome about the pictures the vet did, that was so nice of her. I assume you had to pay for them? It's a pity she doesn't do it anymore. Your diamond art of her looks amazing.

Re: Craft Central

They cost $300 but it was worth it. I’d take a photo but it’s her work and a one of a kind. @Mustang67. She is very talented. She gave up vet work to go full time into her art. She does a different kind of art to the ones she did of the dogs now. But is unbelievably talented. I actually got a print from her of an eastern rosella that it’s at my front door as you walk in. When I got it framed I asked the framer to leave the bit on it that says what number print it is out of how many incase she actually makes it one day. She has that chance.

She was one cute dog. I’ve done one of my dog when she was a pup and dug in the mud and has mud all over her face. I now need to find a good photo of my youngest so he has one too.

@Captain24 your mosaic work is beautiful. Love your diamond dots too, full drills definitely take time and patience.
