Sports Central

Hi there all sports lovers! As lots of forum members like and enjoy sports, I’ve started this thread up to talk all things sport.

This is a discussion space/thread for all things sports, whether that be discussing sports teams, athletes, players or anything in between. Tagging @Shaz51 @Glisten @Emelia8 @tyme @TAB @Ru-bee @AuntGlow and others who may be interested. Feel free to join in on the discussion!

On a personal note, I’m into AFL - Brisbane Lions, NRL - Melbourne Storm, Suncorp Super Netball - West Coast Fever and Sunshine Coast Lightning, cricket- especially BBL with my team being the Hobart Hurricanes, tennis - currently watching the US Open, horse racing and swimming. I’ll also watch the Olympics and Commonwealth Games when they’re on TV.

The AFL finals start off on Thursday night with Adelaide playing Collingwood in Adelaide - Go the Crows and the Brisbane Lions playing the Geelong Cats on Friday night at the MCG with a hopeful Lions win. Whoever wins these 2 matches has the following week off with the losers playing the winners of the other teams next week- see below. Fremantle play the Gold Coast Suns in Perth on Saturday and Hawthorn play the GWS Giants again on Saturday. Both are elimination finals with the losers ending their season. I’d love for the Lions to go back to back and win their 2nd premiership but Adelaide and Geelong are looking pretty good with most if their players in good form so it’s anybody’s guess as to what happens. It would be great to have an all Queensland grand final with the Lions and the Suns but again, I’m doubtful of that happening. Again, anything is possible!

Enjoy your sports and may the best teams win!

Re: Sports Central

It was something I always wanted to go to @Mustang67 The Boxing Day test. A few years ago hubby brought me tickets for Xmas.

It was so good. The amount of people there and just the atmosphere was great. I would love to go to another one.

Re: Sports Central

@Snowie that would be awesome. I would love to go to the boxing day test. I will have to add it to my bucket list. Unfortunately at the moment I am suffering from chronic back pain, which stops me from doing most things. I am waiting for a physio clinic that is supposed to be opening in October to open. As they have specialised equipment that will help strengthen all my muscles that are weak from spending so much time in bed. Once my back is stronger, I will be able to attend more sporting & music events without being in agony.

Re: Sports Central

I hope you can sort out your back issues soon @Mustang67

It sounds like it is stopping you from doing a lot.

At least Oct isn't long away

Re: Sports Central

@Snowie thank you. It has been like this for about 3 years and my daughter has missed out on so much. Thanks to receiving backpay from my disability support pension approval, I can now afford this specialised equipment. And start getting my body all sorted.

Re: Sports Central

Good wonderful amazing fantastic evening @Shaz51 @Mustang67 @Snowie @Eve7 @Chasingsunsets @Emelia8 @rav3n @Ru-bee @tyme @AuntGlow and all sports lovers here tonight! What a fantastic 24 hours it has been in the world of sports!

To start the party off, the Melbourne Storm won last night against the Cronulla Sharks at AAMI Park in Melbourne to advance to the NRL Grand Final next Sunday night in Sydney. I did watch the game on tv and although there were a few scares, the Storm got through so I was a very happy camper. Now, for the Brisbane Broncos to defeat Penrith tomorrow afternoon and I’ll be another happy camper as I’m anti Penrith - time to give another team a premiership and let that be the Melbourne Storm! Brisbane are at home tomorrow so I’m hoping that helps them win through to the grand final next weekend. The Broncos women’s team are also playing the Newcastle Knights in a chance to make the grand final next Sunday tomorrow afternoon before the men’s match at Brisbane so there might be both teams in the grand final next weekend. They’ll play the Sydney Roosters after the Cronulla Sharks went down tonight in the women’s match in Gosford. Let’s paint Sydney purple next Sunday night with a Storm win!

Now for the best news of the day- the Brisbane Lions won the AFL grand final this afternoon against the Geelong Cats with me watching every single minute of the match on tv. The 1st quarter was okay except for us kicking lots of points instead of goals. It was tied at half time however, Chris Fagan- our coach- decided to put Lachie Neale in at the start of the 3rd quarter (he was our substitute player) and that was basically the beginning of the end for Geelong as my boys went onto win the match by 47 points. One of Geelong’s best players, Jeremy Cameron went down with an arm injury before the first half after colliding with another Geelong player, and continued to play until part way into the 3rd and he had to come off injured. Word going around is it’s likely to be a broken arm but that’s yet to be confirmed in the media. Lachie Neale’s calf injury situation must have eased as he even kicked a goal in the 2nd half of the match - talk about miraculous healing- with lots of commentators saying he was a liability to be listed as playing in the big game. Talk about a talking point! Will Ashcroft won the Norm Smith Medal for best on ground for the second year in a row with him playing alongside his younger brother, Levi- a first year player today and a special occasion for the boys. Charlie Cameron scored 4 goals which I was very happy to see as he’d had a rough year with scoring goals all season and not performing his best until today when he really put on a show when it mattered the most. Nearly all the media and commentators were certain that Geelong was going to win the match with me even doubting the boys so to get up and win was a massive achievement and huge upset, with the boys going back to back as they won last year as well. At least today I was able to watch the grand final as last year, I was on the Carnival Splendor cruise ship sailing towards Queensland and taking care of my housemate/best friend who was seasick for most of the day so I missed out on seeing the grand final despite the ship having it on the big screens in different parts of the ship. I have now ordered a premierships poster and 2 premiership bears to go with last years bears (Named Will and Lachie) with the new bears to be called Dayne and Charlie after Dayne Zorko and Charlie Cameron when they arrive in a few weeks time. Let’s just say I’m a very happy camper right now here in Victoria! Go the mighty Brisbane Lions!

Time to continue my celebrations by watching the post game interviews and highlights on 7plus as I missed seeing them because my housemate wanted to watch the news instead! I’ll also watch a replay of the Agenda Setters from Tuesday night which I missed seeing and the Chris Fagan episode of Unfiltered which I didn’t watch last night.

May your favourite teams and players win!

Re: Sports Central

@Judi9877 If my favourite team wins, you wont be a happy camper since I am a long time member and supporter of the Panthers 🐾🐾🐾. Lol

But I am not sure about this year. Up until they played the Bulldogs last week, I didn't think a GF win was on the cards. But I was impressed by their last game. I have noticed a pattern that seems to happen with the teams playing the GF. If they lose the first time around, but are in the GF the following year, they tend to win. And I don't want Storm to win, as that is my partner's team. And my ex partner's family all live in Melbourne and I know longer like them.

Re: Sports Central

A huge couple of days in the world of footy for you @Judi9877 . I'm happy for you. Your Lions beat Cats convincingly in the end, despite such a close first half. A final scoreline similar to last years GF against our Swannies @Mustang67 .

As for the NRL, I have lost interest now that my Raiders are out. Not keen on any of the remaining teams. I think it shows a major failure on the part of the NRL to have one, two or three teams dominating the comp every year. Not an even playing field in my opinion, whether it be salary cap, other incentives, or ref cheating. Something needs to be fixed to make it more competitive for all teams.

Re: Sports Central

Hi @Emelia8 but you must be happy with the Raiders performance this year finishing top. I don't think I have seen up the top for a long time. They must have the right group of players together this year.

I hope you are having an enjoyable day 😊 Not long now, and my game starts. It should be a good and close game.

Re: Sports Central

Yes @Mustang67 😊 very happy with my Raiders team this year. Especially since they were widely tipped to be the wooden spooners at the start of the year. Just really disappointed that they lost the first semi against Broncos, when they had a good lead. Yes they had some bad calls against them. But it shouldn't have come down to that

And now I see Broncos have beaten Penrith and are into the GF next week 😕. Should have been Raiders 😭.
