Re: Tabaluga's 2.0

Hey @TAB you were right about thread count - its a marketing scam.

Is there deceptive marketing involved in thread count on linens? (Asked ChatGBT)

Yes—thread count in linens is one of the most common areas where deceptive or at least misleading marketing shows up.

Here’s what’s going on:

1. What thread count actually means

Thread count is supposed to be the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric (both horizontal + vertical). In theory, higher thread count = smoother, softer fabric.

2. Where the deception happens

Manufacturers often inflate thread count in ways that sound impressive but don’t reflect real quality:

  • Multi-ply yarn trick
Instead of using single threads, some brands use multi-ply yarns (threads twisted together).
Then they count each ply as a separate thread.
→ Example: A fabric with 300 threads made from 2-ply yarns gets marketed as “600 thread count.”
  • Overstated numbers
Claims like 800, 1000, or even 1500+ thread count are often unrealistic for standard cotton weaves. At that point, the yarns must be extremely thin or multi-layered, which can actually reduce durability.
  • Focus on one metric only
Marketing highlights thread count while ignoring more important factors like:
    • Fiber quality
    • Weave type
    • Finishing processes

3. What actually matters more than thread count

A lower thread count sheet can easily outperform a higher one if it uses better materials:

  • Fiber quality
    • Long-staple cotton (like Egyptian or Supima) is smoother and stronger
  • Weave
    • Percale: crisp and breathable
    • Sateen: softer and silkier
  • Yarn construction
    • Single-ply yarns are generally better than multi-ply

4. The “sweet spot”

For most high-quality cotton sheets:

  • 200–400 thread count (percale)
  • 300–600 thread count (sateen)

Anything far above that often gives diminishing returns—or signals marketing inflation.

5. Is it illegal?

Not necessarily. It depends on how thread count is calculated and labeled in a given country. Some practices are technically allowed but still misleading to consumers, which is why regulators and consumer groups have criticized the industry.

✅ Bottom line:
Thread count isn’t useless—but it’s heavily marketed in a way that can mislead. It’s better to treat it as one small piece of the puzzle rather than the main indicator of quality.
