Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I’ve been dealing with the usual ups and downs, more downs recently than ups @Chasingsunsets

I made decision to do “my story” in all its past ‘unpleasantness’ in one post. Very, very draining. Glad now though as it’s done, and everyone is welcome to read.

also chose to do post with everything in it which is to do with female body including recent decision involving body shaping. Was good to get things out, felt vulnerable and exposed for a bit. Has led to posts about “non traditional” clothing, hair styles and general physical appearance.

happy to share link to the posts if you would like. 100% ok whether you wish to read or not. 🙂

physically Im not feeling 100% this morning. I’m still hoping to get to model train exhibition that’s on today not far from me

I did the same with last load of my laundry yesterday @AlwaysMyself @Chasingsunsets reminded me of something I heard at some stage. “Can always run the dishwasher twice”.

context was person who was unwell was concerned about remembering if had clean or dirty dishes in the dishwasher. I liked the response from the therapist

100% agree @Flutterbug9 with the dishwasher and washing machine perspective!

Much more helpful than a psychotherapy psychiatrist in the past of mine who suggested having 2 dishwashers in the kitchen, as a solution to struggling with the effort of unpacking after its clean (i use things straight out of the dishwasher until it needs to have dirties stacked into it again).

I mean sure, if i had all the money and kitchen space in the world then 2 dishwashers would be a really practical solution. *shakes head*.

Yep this is a 100% true story. I was in my early 20's at the time (with chronic fatigue, severe SI depression and struggling with this worsening whilst working fulltime hours).

Hope this story gives some comic relief @Flutterbug9 @Chasingsunsets @Cuddlebear

Thats how i frame ridiculous past experiences, to make light fun of them now.

I felt like taking the dogs out today. Then i remembered i dont have the dogs. But its also going to be 37 today. And so the dogs might come over, but only if it gets too hot at my ex's apartment. So yeah, taking the dogs out even to the indoor shops that has a cafe that allows dogs... yeah nah not a good idea.

Actually, ive been thinking of how have @Captain24 's pups gone yesterday with the heat?

@AlwaysMyself I’ve seen where businesses have double sided sign on front of their dishwasher

one side saying Clean, please empty me

other side saying dirty, please wash when I’m full

large building I worked in at one stage which did have 2 dishwashers in the kitchen also used the signs.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself , that's what I thought about the pool of NDIS money. And unfortunately, I see so much of it being misused...

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I’m sorry but I haven’t read through just saw I was tagged @AlwaysMyself

It wasn’t as hot as expected yesterday it only got to around 38 but a feels like of low 30’s. Mum said Pix was hot but managed better than she thought. Mum did try to put a cold towel on her and she snapped and snarled and tried to bite her so I could be interesting today.so far today it’s 39.8 and feels like 38 and it’s not the hottest part of the day. I’ll find out how she is in my drive to work. Mum will answer the phone and the first thing I’ll say is how’s Pix?

Hope all is good in everyone’s world

Sat down to start my Auslan studies before the fullday zoom next week (and there are a few things the email says need to be done in advance - i suspect its formal code of conduct / non-plagerism stuff but not sure). And nope they still havent setup my enrolment into their course content on their system yet, despite saying on Thursday that they had. :face_with_rolling_eyes:

@Flutterbug9 @Chasingsunsets reckon i'll get access on Tuesday? (Tomorrow being public holiday)

Reckon i'll get access before the following Monday when the 6 hour zoom class is? 🤣

Im hopeful for the later....

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I had a productive-ish day. Bit of housework, but of rest, bit of going out with family. But starting to notice my mood and thoughts heading downhill now that im winding down.

Am painting and have a tv show on. But thoughts still coming and feelings are there. I think the feelings came first. I think maybe being tired is the trigger tonight, but not sure. Not sleepy though or else i would go to bed. Not sure why this tiredness triggers it, when i havent been feeling exhausted and i know i dont have anything planned for tomorrow so i can rest as much as i want.

It doenst make sense. But i guess MH/MI doesnt have to make sense does it. Sometimes it just is.

And yet i feel i dont want to ask my mum to come sit with me or watch tv with me, even though she is just downstairs. I feel that is just "being needy" and because there is nothing specific that she can do to help. After all, im already trying to watch tv, and i have nothing to talk about. All she could do is to tell me she cares i guess.
