Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I’ve been reading along @AlwaysMyself @Cuddlebear

in my area there are few free, safe drop in areas that don’t need referral.

one open 9am to 6pm Mon - Fri, not open on public holidays though

medicare MH centre, open parts of every day 12:00 to 9pm Mon to Fri. 1:00 to 7 pm sat, sun and public holidays.

there needs to be more funding allocated for MH and support locations.

woman I had some dealing with few years ago was found early hrs one morning on top of bridge over a highway, her daughter pleading with her to not do anything (active SI and in very bad headspace. Police to ED, triaged by MH team, kept in ED over night as no other safe place. Police to Medicare MH centre the following day then to her elderly parents in nearby country town as only safe place for both child and her mother

I'm definitely going to have a read of that link @Cuddlebear 😊 thats good to know!i think the NDIS info just generally says it "doesnt cover medical care", so i guess its how people frame the need that determines if it is disability-related support or medical care perhaps.

Makes total sense about needing podiatry due to your additional foot disability, but also just as you say in terms of not being able to examine your own foot care - especially with other things that can impact also (im thinking of things like infections, or with diabetes i think it is gout that is of higher risk, etc etc).

I know my counsellor has a number of clients with NDIS that pays for their sessions, as she thinks it could likely also get covered in my case too *if* my application werent rejected - but im not sure how/why. Maybe because of the nature of the ongoing psychosocial support she provides weekly. However not yet actioning NDIS - waiting to see the MH GP first.

I might look into / consider RC a bit more. Its good that people have option for no video or voice too - same as my other suport group i go to. 😊 i like conversation-based peer-support and peer-learning -- in case no one noticed i like conversation 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

@Flutterbug9 dog is so accurate! 😆 some days my dogs follow me everywhere! And yes always stand in front of the door.

@Cuddlebear if the image (in Fb's post) is too hard to read the text because of contrast, just let me know and I would be my pleasure to type the text out for you 🥰🤗.

@tyme correct re: more people eligible but no increase in the pool of money 😭. Means less per person. NDIS funding is such an issue... so complex with the system and how much money is lost to middleman services and admin, etc. When i hear of people using NDIS funds for innapripriate things (and yes I have known of a person who did this without thinking it was inappropriate to do, even once told/questioned by others socially) it makes me sad because of how that money could have been put towards other that honestly dont get enough assigned to their funding pools for adequate support - like yourself @Cuddlebear .

I guess its one reason i decided against applying for NDIS in past years even though i was on a part-time income and spending most of it on supports for my MH and fatigue. Only reconsidering this year due to when my work leave runs out and having no income (or a centrelink payment only).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

My day went well/fine overall. Even put some of the chrome shelving up in the study. Omg just realised i put my laundry in the washing when i started doing that... and never got it out!! It must have finished whilst having dinner with the tv on! :face_with_rolling_eyes:🥴. Oh well, its nearly 1130pm and im in bed. They can wait in the machine until tomorrow lol. But i had better set a reminder alarm 😅 to get them out and hang them (or put through a rinse cycle again if need be if theyre smelly from the night in the washer haha).

Coffee chats were ok. Not really felt engaged in the conversations, but because i've been taking my painting to do whilst chatting that has helped a lot with not feeling disconnected and then low mood from it. But was very tired after both outings today. I said elsewhere today that i feel like my body is at least twice my age lol. 😅.

No plans for me for tomorrow. Except probably accompany my mother on her weekly sunday dinner visit to my grandma.

Oh, i should probably also look at the study materials too now that theyve actually enrolled my profile to the course (Auslan)... i forgot about that today - which isnt a problem.

I had best get some shuteye now. See you around 😊 - and of course always welcome to post and tag me any time of the day/night. I have my phone on silent so i wont ever wake from the notifications. 🤭
