Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Super interesting realisation @AlwaysMyself - so just to ensure I'm understanding you, when you are having intense feelings, is it that the more 'logical' thoughts tend to minimise or are judgemental of said feelings?

I get what you mean about the 'warmth'. I think for me this feeling of the person being 'warm' to talk to is related to how authentic they are in how they're relating. Interestingly I have met people who don't come across as warm or authentic but by all evidence they do genuinely care. But I totally get how that lack of warmth, regardless of the person's true feelings, can be very invalidating and at times can make us feel like we don't matter. I've also met people in non-professional settings who are seemingly just like that - it's like they've always got a mask on and everything kinda comes out in what I sometimes call the 'customer service voice'... even if we're just talking about like pets or hobbies or something.

Really glad to hear you found some support groups that sound like they got some potential for you! The mind-body connection cannot be understated so I am super curious to hear how it goes for you 😊💜

I haven't forgotten about the list of MH profiles on insta - been flat out tonight and haven't had time to go combing through my very bloated saved folder on there haha hopefully tomorrow 🤞

@Jynx my logical thoughts aren't judgemental of my feelings, they are objectively rational (and it's not just me saying that, MH staff, counsellors etc). I am accepting of having feelings and that they in themselves can't hurt me and are natural and not a bad thing, etc. But accepting them doesn't take them away. The problem is when my logical thoughts align with my upset feelings and are both coming to the same conclusions, then I can neither logically reframe it nor have a thought and not feel it.

Good afternoon, lovely @AlwaysMyself 🫶

And hello @Flutterbug9 @Cuddlebear - how are you both feeling today?

@AlwaysMyself, very excited to hear how your counselling and peer support sessions go. 🥰 I like the approach of a big toolbox too, because one thing may be a miracle tool for someone and not-so-much for another. I hope you will get lots of new practices to experiment with. 🤩

A mental health-focused GP is a good idea too - someone who will check-in around your overall wellbeing is always really helpful.

The 6-week peer support group sounds perfect! Exploring this again, even though it didn't align last time, speaks volumes about your hope and optimism - these are amazing qualities to have access to throughout recovery.

I completely get that feeling of being too distracted or exhausted to feel. I think that's a big reason why so many of us 'stay busy'. We are often still subtly dysregulated, but the stress is channeled into activity, so it can be really confronting when we slow down. Please know you're not alone here. 🫶

I think your activities, which keep you engaged sound really helpful. I was actually going to suggest movement too, because it helps us to soothe and ground the body. And when the body is regulated, the mind slows with it. Would you try yoga? Vinyasa is a mix of movement that will get your blood flowing, and breath/mindfulness that will help to slow you down. I really like Yoga with Adriene, she has such a healing, safe energy: https://www.youtube.com/user/yogawithadriene

How is your Auslan study going? 🤩

And how is mum/your pups?

Hi @AuntGlow

Has been good day today. Transferred grocery run from today until tomorrow. Went clothes shopping instead at local Kmart. Was going to go to specialty store until their costs. I would have 2 items for same price as the approx 10 I bought this morning. Sports bras and crop top styles which provide support without my chest being in front of rest of me (no pun intended), 2 sizes smaller than have been wearing.

currently cats at front door, screen door locked. I’m enjoying bit of warm air coming through back screen door and about to start final level of LEGO building in between getting laundry done

how are things with you?

anything exciting happening your way?

plans for Australia Day weekend?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thanks @AuntGlow , I will check that out at some stage. I've been thinking I should try the hip-yoga one too, but not gotten around to it yet. I'm not sure how I will feel doing it... but there is only one way to find out. I can't do anything that applies downward force onto my hands/wrists, but I can skip those (sometimes I can modify them into fists - such as when I get up from the floor, but this also hurts after a short time, so for sustained or repetitive things this is not good). It's good to see they have them sorted by body-area. It will probably be good for keeping my muscles a little less tight during the week too.

Haven't started the studies yet, as they "hadn't gotten around to enrolling all the students" by the start date. 😒. (What's the point of specifying a start date in advance if you aren't going to be ready for it??). Apparently mine has now been setup and ready - But I haven't looked at it yet. Feel more like forum at the moment, having just gotten home. No rush on the Auslan - plenty of time over the weekend.

Dogs have gone to my ex's for the weekend and he has even offered to keep them for Monday because it's a public holiday. Hurray! However he said he might come bring them back to be at the house here on Sunday if it gets too hot at his apartment 😒; but as long as I'm not on dog-duty I guess.

No plans for the long weekend for me. Now that i'm not working it's just like a normal weekend, except that my friends are busy because of events scheduled for the long weekend.

@Flutterbug9 Got to love the lower clothing prices at Kmart / Target / Big W 😊. Glad you got some stuff that hopefully will fit well.

Yay for LEGO afternoon for you 😍. Would be a very good laundry-drying day here today, a bit under 30's. From tomorrow, it will be mid 30's & higher for a whole week. 😱 Air-con all the way.

@AlwaysMyself first off as promised 😋 Insta profiles!! I'd share some specific videos but not sure they're all 100% in guidelines and don't have time to comb through and make sure 😅

I think I get what you mean about not being able to logically reframe certain thoughts. Curious about two things -

Does this tend to result in a 'spiral' for you, i.e. where one thought leads to another and each one also ignites heavy or challenging feelings that can then also influence said thought trains?

Do the thoughts revolve around anything in particular, i.e. self & identity, relationships and social connections, or like broader stuff about the nature of the world and society, or more existential topics like human nature and such, etc etc. or is it dependent on the day/context?

No pressure to delve too deeply (or respond to this at all!) just to satisfy my curiosity of course, totally up to you 💜

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Jynx I am open to talking about the nature of the thoughts, but they aren't forum-friendly (even within a content box).

Whether or not they chain from one thought to another into a spiral... I don't think so. I'm not an anxious or catastrophising person. It's not a matter of "despair". I am, I suppose, "resigned" to how things are and too accepting of how things are now -- after so many years of things not helping or improving. Lack of purpose/meaning in life coupled with lack of interest (or positive feeling/experiences) have a big impact. Fatigue and weariness of living.

I can see things I contribute to lives (positive things); I have no issue with self-esteem in terms of who I am or my value. I like who I am.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Valid @AlwaysMyself - I imagine it can be really hard to find a place to discuss the thoughts in depth that isn't within a 1:1 therapy space. You've linked in with some peer support right? Maybe that's a place to do so.

Alas... I think in another world I would have loved the chance to sit and have this discussion with you at length hun. I love digging into those deep, difficult questions, and really believe that we all deserve a safe, non-judgemental space to talk about the tough, sometimes taboo topics.

Sounds a little bit like this concept in psychology called 'learned helplessness', are you familiar? Not saying it fits to a T of course, because there's so much complexity and I definitely don't want to paint the picture that I think you're actually helpless, or even that you've 'given up' or something, but I definitely am not surprised by the weariness and resignation.

I'm glad you like who you are. I like who you are too, or at least, what I've gotten to bear witness to in this space. It's a privilege to be able to know you in this way, in this forum 😊💜

Hey there @AlwaysMyself, just wanted to pop by and see how you were going? Thanks for all your tags I have a lot to catchup on, I just have seemed to have lost my brain but when it comes back I plan on replying 😊🌻

Love also your posts from @AuntGlow @Jynxsuper helpful stuff there 🤩

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

No pressure @Chasingsunsets 😊. And it's always OK also to not feel you need to back-read the tags, and just ask for a "how are things now?" instead. Whatever is best for you. And don't forget -- I also care how you are too! No matter how I am myself.
