Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Content/trigger warning

I am really stuggling lately with the lack of available support, and especially "on demand" (at times of upset/distress) supports. I have my counsellor and the SI support group to talk to about things. But thats all pre-scheduled. The only adhoc is the safe space/haven, and its limited hours and a half hour away which limits time availability further when things begin in the evening. I didnt go there tonight because i knew i had the support group and hoped that would help.

Public MH cant help because i'm not acting on the feelings. Even if they could, they aren't adhoc either.

The only option i have is my mum. I dont want to though. I could hear in her voice this evening the pain when she acknowledges the situation we're in this year. I dont want to cause her pain by talking about it with her.

I tried BB today, since i dont think ive tried them in years. Thinking maybe they wont be as scripted as LL. But i just couldnt stay on hold any longer. Hearing the "your call is important to us" kept making me feel worse because what is causing me upset is that i cant talk to anyone about things really, when i want to.

Guess i have to wait until i see my counsellor on friday.

Society says it wants me to live. It says there is help available. But help is not available when i need it, not in the ways that help me. Theres help to keep you alive for a night. Theres help for environmental-trigger coping. But if you already have those skills...? If what you need is compionship through the pain during the strong desires.... there's not.

Of course im safe. I always am. I hope one day i wont feel the way i do.

@moderator cant add any content boxes as i am on a mobile device. Probanly throw the whole post in one is easiest/best. I dont want to upset people again with them knowing i'm struggling, unless they want to.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

It feels bad that 8hrs later and still no aid from the team on my request to help with the content trigger box.

Im trying to tell myself that maybe the person rostered was sick, or maybe someone was in a crisis (not that here is meant for crisis) and needed the focused attention instead. I have no idea how it looks behind the scenes, and i try to reframe into this. But 8 hours? Really?

I can't help but to think it was seen (since i did tag it) and decided it wasnt important/worth doing. Whats the point in tagging the team?

Last time i tagged the team (nearly a week ago?) I never got a reply either. Was asking a qu about whether the tags go to PSW also or only mod accounts. Not a hard one to answer. But thankfully also not essential to know - just useful. But i guess it wasnt worth responding to either.

I wish i understood what was going on behind the scenes, so that i could understand why this is happening.

Hi @AlwaysMyself

you have been so patient, I thought I had replied several hours ago so my sincerest apologies...I think my system glitched!!

You have been persevering with your feelings and the weight of helpseeking, and the WAITing. Your community is here for you and I know you had some lovely replies (which mine was meant to be part of).

Sharing the struggles and being open to the community support is what this space is all about, I know you did get some supportive replies and I hope that company assisted somewhat.

I am unsure of the process around the content/trigger warning so will note that down for the next moderator.

Again apologies my reply did not work

take care

Mindee

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you @Mindee , i appreciate that you thought you had responded. I know we are all human and make these mistakes sometimes; I don't think badly of you for it. I appreciate your honesty in explaining this.

Being alone without someone to talk freely to doesn't help. Even though i know there are people who care and wish they could talk to me freely about it. Even though i know the volunteers/staff on crisis lines do that role becaue they care about people who are in pain, even though the demand for services exceeds the resources to take calls in a timely manner. Every time i have thoughts or feelings that my call is not important to them, or on saturday that my distress and need for a quiet place to sit was not important to the nurses, or that i am not worth responding to -- any of these thoughts/feelings i knoe aren't the true picture, and i always combat them -- i've done this for 20 years, its automatic to do so now. I always challenge these thoughts and try to think about the other reasons behind why i cant get support when i need it, in a way i need it. But knowing doesnt always help the hurt of feeling that support isnt available, because the reality is the support is still unavailable even if i can understand why.

@AlwaysMyself Hello my friend. How are you?

Thank you for catching me up.

I understand the lack of support for chronic mental illness. This is something I’ve really had a lot of trouble with too. I’m sick of getting shoved to services that can’t help. These are referrals so it’s very frustrating thet I get referred to places that have nothing to offer.

Im glad you’ve found an unorthodox way to cope. You probably can’t say on forums but I’m glad it’s something that helps you.

I know it’s hard to have treatment for trauma. I’m wondering by treating the trauma if this will help you in recovery getting to a better baseline? Is there technique the counsellor uses?

It’s good there’s a delay will give you more time to taper. I know it’s not idea but taper can get hard so more time might in fact be helpful. How are you going with the taper?

A short term peer support aid will be of benefit while you taper and wait for the trial too. Do you know how long it will take to team you up with peer support? Has it started?

Oh I see you have started your second decrease already. I’m hoping it’s not brutal. Going through it myself I’m happy to answer questions or for you to have someone to talk to. Please tag me. I’ll prioritise your tags.

Im so glad you’ve found an did go to ED. They can talk to you and they can monitor that very high blood pressure too. It sounds like it was helpful. I’m just sorry the places you normally go were not available. You can also check blood pressure for free at local chemist and record it to show GP. My blood pressure and heart rate per minute went through the roof while tapering. I’m now on a beta blocker thwt has helped bring heart rate down. Blood pressure is still high but in the lower bracket.

It’s good you caught up with a friend and could both share recent experiences. I like how you can do that desputw the way you feel.

I’ve been very messy and not really coping. I’m disappointed at everyrhing because desputw trying to get the right support there’s nothing really on offer.

It’s been like a torture getting through each day. No joy no relief.

I’ve been a bit disappointed with the changes here too. I appreciate that change happens but I’m not sure it has been a positive one. Love the peers here. I just think that there seems to be a lack of staff and things take ages to be approved. The recovery club won’t start till sometime in February. It’s something that lifted me. Gave me some human contact and good presentations.

Let me know if you want how you are. I’m sorry I’m so slow.

Hey @AlwaysMyself ,

Good to see you. I mentioned https://www.mindspot.org.au/info/the-big-five to someone else. Wonder if you can access it? Note though, I don't know much about it.

Do you have any Safe Havens in your area?
