Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@Flutterbug9 Hello lovely. Apologies I’m literally 3 days behind on the forums. How are you feeling? Remember no pressure to answer.

Financial stress is hard and accessing medical in public system even comes with costs … I know there’s gaps too with private medical but I don’t have that. Things are very expensive at the moment Eg food, utilities etc. I can understand the panic of any up coming medical costs.

It sounds like you have some renovations quotes too. I hope you can get a fair price and goes smoothly.

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you feeling today?

I am so happy that you liked the at home service person who did your intake. It’s great too that they have a person in mind who would be a really good fit for you. I’m hoping they will be. What does the service/support worker do? Is it peer support or something else?

It sounds like you are feeling physically unwell and emotionally flat? Is there anything I can do?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello my friend. I’ve just gotten to this post now and read it all. How are you feeling today?

It could be the discussion and the verbalisation of how you are thinking. Also, because it was intake you have to go over a lot of things and that brings up all sorts of thoughts that you might struggle with. At the same time you are tapering so your neurotransmitters and nervous system are trying to adjust so that can be an added impact. I am really hopeful you’ll be matched with the right worker who is able to support you in your circumstances. Please if you want to let me know how that goes.

I’m glad you have your mum there. I realise this doesn’t magically make the SI go away. To me you are such a valuable and amazing human being. You’re a star that brings light to others in darkness. It saddens me you feel the way you do and I want you to be a star in your life too thwts able to lift that darkness with the support of other stars like me and other forum friends.

I have faith and hope that this year you will make progress. You are just at the start of that journey now. You’re not alone it that journey either.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Just a quick post before I head to one of my weekly support meetings. Kept myself busy today by accompanying my mother on her outing to take my grandma to a medical appt and lunch. Was very tiring for me, even though just sitting; I think 3.5 hours outing? Perhaps just being out and having to listen to people was tiring.

But I guess also had a follow-up call from the public MH team to see if the other program had reached out yet (which is good they follow that up after a week), and asked if there is anything else they can do to help -- which doesn't sit well with me, because they're the ones telling me there is nothing available to support me medium or long-term - they only intervene if people are more or less 2 planning within (or have attempted in the last) 2 weeks, and that's not me. I just wish they wouldn't ask such questions - say what they really mean. So that probably put me in a bit of a mood for the day/outing.

Still just one foot in front of the other.

But thankfully not feeling the affect of medication decrease, other than a tiny bit of dizziness occasionally with rapid movement.

I do appreciate your support, checking-in, and hearing how you all are too though - even if I'm tried, grumpy, and fed-up with living. 😅.

You have made headway @AlwaysMyself even if it feels like it’s very slow.
I think you’re achieving a lot in the time since you took a work break.

Yes, the criteria for public MH is tight. It’s a ridiculous situation but that’s MH funding!
It’s great you’ve had few tapering symptoms. I get dizziness on tapering, it’s not fun!

I think you did well today, sounds like you had a bit happening

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you?

You had a big day yesterday. How was the weekly support meeting?

It’s really good that the MH service checked in to see if you had heard from the new one. I get your frustration and disappointment when they ask if there’s anything else they can do when they know there’s nothing else they can offer. That isn’t helpful and I’ve had that happen to me too.

Im really glad you are not feeling any brutal taper withdrawals. That there’s some mild ones only.

I know it’s been really tough for you and checking in to see how you are is something I really want to do.

Whats on today for you? Anything in particular?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thanks @Cuddlebear , i've been wondering how you are also?

I wish your tapering was as minimal as my symptoms have been. 😢. Hoping mine dont get worse as i decrease further over the upcoming months, but realistically i expect they will.

Were yours severe from the start? Or only once you dropped to a particular % of the original dosage?

I recall the pdoc in charge was very negligent and you ended up with seratonin syndrome ☹️.

The support group was good. I did mention a bit about how i've been the past few weeks with regards to the lack of wanting to wait and try; about not having a concept of "better" than i am now or wanting to live.

@Flutterbug9 the reason i rarely mention that i have a support group i join (and i think before this i have never mentioned which day or time it is) is because it is a very small group, open to anyone, and would be easily identifiable. Having said that though, i wouldn't mind if someone from that group said they connected me between here and there and that i'm the same person - that wouldn't bother me if they were a person who also shares about themselves in the group, as I have always had positive and supportive experiences there.

My mum has helped me sort/put-away some things in my study today 🥰😍. She sat with me and chatted and helped motivate me and help me decide where to put things away in my study.

Not fully done yet, but a lot is done now. Need to put together the metal shelves again for inside the wardrobe so i can put things on them. And have a box of computer things to sort and store. Then theres a bunch of things i need to move to other rooms instead. And then i think the study is done for now?? Until i find things in other rooms that belong in there 😆.

But this is a win. We spent a number of hours doing it.

Sharing this "win" also with @Shaz51 @Till23 @MissGremlin @NightFury @Chasingsunsets

Oh, also got a call from the research trial people. They will send my GP the details this week so that I can get the referral and test referrals from him when i see him on Monday. Start date is pushed an extra month away, but such is life. Could mean i can take more time to reduce medication in the lower dosages if i need to. Or else a longer time without medication before it - which i think would be interesting/good to see what i stabilise at before any trial treatments.
