Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@AlwaysMyself @Cuddlebear

Having come through being love bombed by a narcissistic female ‘friend’ couple years ago, I’ve learnt to be careful what I say and to whom.

wary about referring to others as a friend also

@AlwaysMyself happy to hear you have a group you attend where you feel welcome and supported.

That’s definitely a win @AlwaysMyself getting a room squared away. I’d be celebrating that.

I mowed my front lawn today, did some pruning of things that got burnt on the really hot days, cleaned out my gutters and a couple of little yard things. It’s bin night tonight, so they are out. I need to do a lot more, but I am trying to be kind to myself because I am so tired, which I think is just depression.

Your group sounds really supportive, which is great.

Can you mention what your trial is about?

Hi @Cuddlebear. I’m trying to catch up on the forums.

this last week has been crazy both physically and mentally. Have possibly pushed myself too far to quickly.

couple small boxes in garage to be sorted plus couple things I’m hoping to get rid of and will be done as best as I can.

I’ve done some work in front room which I’m happy with. Still more work to be done.

neighbour supposed to be coming over tomorrow to lift a small 2 cube storage unit down, is currently on top of chrome shelving unit that is more than 6ft tall. Also supposed to be helping me measure, mark and cut thin mdf sheeting so I can put it onto chrome shelving so things don’t fall through plus give them stability.

noon Friday I’ve got person coming from local blind company for free measure and quote for alfresco blinds. I’m expecting cost possibly be too much for me to be able to get everything done that needs to be done to have blinds installed. Will give me estimate though which gives me something to start with.

ive decided to order and pay for recently released Lego building. Bye, bye savings that pension day.

hoping you are feeling better within yourself.

have you and Wilbur been enjoying some walks in the sunshine this last week?

Hey @Till23 happy to chat about the trial - as far as i am allowed within the community guidelines. It is a Psychadelic-Assisted-Therapy (PAT) research trial. 25% chance i get the full active treatment. 25% chance i get the full "alternative" (in place of a placebo, they use another substance that is known to not have effects that endure once the substance is out of your system). Doses are a few weeks apart, 3 doses in total. But study duration is of course 6 months because they need to assess the post-treatment impact for if effects are lasting for awhile.

@Flutterbug9 so glad your neighbour is helpful and someone you can do it with 😊🥰.

Do remember to take it easy on yourself - especially with fatigue and pain levels. I know sometimes i overdo it by accident if i'm really focused on "getting it done".

I wonder if we have the same/similiar type of chrome shelving. 😋

No harm getting a quote to see what it will cost 😊 - only way you can then know to make a decision and what the different options would be. 😊

Yay for new lego coming!

It can be hard to balance hobbies cost with savings / other expenses, i know. But self-care including recreation is important so it is important to also set aside a budget for those things. 😊. Like my spending recently on 3d plaster and mould-making supplies.

Would you like to share which Lego building?

@AlwaysMyself When I spoke to neighbour on Monday his reply was, can do later in the week. He wears hearing aides in both ears, I tried to get him to understand tomorrow doesn’t work for me and I don’t want to wait for weeks. Late Thursday morning, no sign of him. Doubt going to get done this week. Flow through is it stuffs around with my head.

If I still had all the tools I had prior to moving here I would have been able to have done all the cutting etc needed so mdf fits on different shelves.

chrome shelving are Pinnacle brand from Bunnings

im also waiting on reply to email I’ve sent about progress of referral to psychiatrist. I’ve got few things to do prior to heading out for awhile.

Non-commited vagueness from people annoys me soo much @Flutterbug9 ! I am such a planner i like to know what i am doing when. The "sometime this week" really irritates me because so often people dont get around to it if they dont plan a time to do it. I am very frustrated on your behalf 😅. You are not alone in finding it challenging when people say/do this - even if our emotional reactions may be different, the trigger is a common experience.

I guess it gives you some permission to casually say "hey, want to do the garage shelves now?" If you see them idling in their driveway 😋. Or could suggest to come over before a specific day lunch/dinner with them staying on for a thank-you meal after?

(When i moved house a few years back, i asked for volunteer friends/family to help move in the morning with pizza lunch my-shout afterwards. Just casual.)

I really hope they do come through for it this week, and at a time you are available. Or would they let you borrow their tools unsupervised??

(I haven't used a circular saw often for a decade, so i am too scared to use them unsupervised now lol. But i own one! I would totally lend it to you for the MDF if i could. I even got a triton bench second hand for it so its safer to use secured.)

Aha yep! They're like the ones i have like this: https://www.bunnings.com.au/pinnacle-1800-x-900-x-300mm-white-4-tier-adjustable-shelving-unit_p0437242 although dont recall which size i have. I didnt want the ones with wheels though. Oddly they are cheaper at Bunnings than Costco (maybe different brands, but i dont care because both are good quality) - so i also got the bunnings ones. 😊 we probably have like 5 or 6 sets around the house because i bought more when i moved out to my apartment, but of course now we have excess since i moved back in lol.

@AlwaysMyself Feeling flat this afternoon. Not deflated, worse than that.

not long home from getting few things, one being MOC Cafe Corner. I will be ordering from Lego Shopping Street and Fries Food Truck.

a childhood neighbour had the nickname “Gunna”. He used the word with everyone. Hardly ever did he let anyone down. He was respected.

trying to put the stuff with the guy opposite me into back of my mind. Next week I’ll measure and mark where I want things cut and arrange to have one of the men at the workshop here cut them for me.

my most recent move was 3bedroom to 2bedroom (laundry in garage. I’ve got lot of the pinnacle shelving units also.

catch up on the forums, dinner and I’m probably going to bed after that. Add almost no sleep last night to today. Very low mood and nil interest

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Those legos look great @Flutterbug9 ! I recall you mentioning about maybe in the future having a train set running around the garage (in honour of you late partner) - i can just imagine a whole lego city taking over your garage that the train is integrated into to serve the minifigure citizens 😋

And early night and catchup sleep sounds a good idea. I wonder if there is anything you can do over the coming hours to help increase the chance of getting to sleep easier or more solidly? (Eg wind down activities?) (More just a reflective question in case its a good reminder for any pre-sleep routines you find helpful 😊)

Wishing you the best sleep later on. 😊

Sounds like an interesting trial @AlwaysMyself

I have recently considered trying to access some kind of psychedelic assisted therapy as I’ve had depression for quite a few decades now. It is a bit difficult to know whether it’s a good idea and how long the effects endure, because there hasn’t been a lot of good quality research, which makes your trial even more important. I probably should look into it a bit more. I’m also thinking about transcranial magnetic stimulation. There are clinics near me that do that.
