Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

My heads a bit all over the place tonight @AlwaysMyself

Thought I read about people sharing and chatting on here, couldn’t see it when went to double check, thought mind of imagined it. I’d rather ask that make ‘ass out of you and me’ (assume).

I had unpleasant experience with psychiatrist couple years ago. Referral from gp mentioned I was having therapy with psychologist and requested assessment of meds. In initial appointment psychiatrist launched into something like last stage of exposure therapy. Experience was so overwhelming and triggering I couldn’t find my voice. 2nd appointment he denied knowing I was seeing psychologist and left me feeling he wasn’t really interested in actually “helping” me. Things didn’t improve in 3rd appointment, 4th and final appointment he showed he wasn’t fully listening to me.

that experiences has left me feeling doubtful about outcome of referral to new psychiatrist and in attending appointments with her.

feeling similar with new psychologist I’ve started seeing, she is aware it and has said she understands. 2nd appointment with her will be mid this coming week, last appointment she said about starting to work on my goals. After having previous psychologist primarily making the decisions plus never asking me what I wanted, I’m feeling like “duck out of water”.

Ah yes @Flutterbug9 seeing someone new can definitely bring up interesting things for us hey! It’s sounding positive though with your new psych though!

I hear how challenging it could be to see a new psychiatrist given your experiences however I always keep an open mind that everyone new isn’t the same as the last and “what if” this is the one I have needed. Don’t want to miss the chance if I’m “turned off” before going to seem them so will always give them a chance 🙏, I’m wondering what you think about the above 😊

i definitely hear you though!!

I am off to bed shortly, lovely chatting and hope to touch base when we are next on 😊

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello my friend. How are you feeling today?

I’ve just seen your post. How did you go last night? I know the thoughts are hard and you’ve been tired and not at home which might make it harder not having the supporys you need. Do you have things to help you today? Perhaps you could call the place you usually go to seeing as nothing is open in Sydney near you? You also have us here too.

Was counselling helpful yesterday? I’m glad you have the flexibility with the counsellor.

Remember you’ve got me and others here who do care about how you are. I want to send you lots of love and hugs my friend.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you all for you supportive words, pics and thoughts @Cuddlebear @Chasingsunsets @Flutterbug9 @TunedIn .

Was feeling OK when i woke up this morning, but starting to head downhill again. Forum was a good distraction and then was able to play a visual-logic puzzle game until i was tired enough to sleep last night.

@Cuddlebear i hadnt thought of calling the one from my region. Thats a really good idea. Im going to keep that in mind - even once i get home, if its near-to-closing time (cant drive there in time) but want some short support thats a really good idea too. Just checked their website and it doesnt say they are closed or modified hours, and they do have a phone line listed - so that is a really good option. Thank you for this idea! 😊

@Flutterbug9 wow, that is a horrific experience with that psychiatrist. I am so glad that i can say NONE of the 4 psychiatrists i have seen have been like that (2 were treating and 2 were for on-referral/assessment). All 4 i have felt listened and respected me - including the one for assessment through the public health system. Actually, i quite liked the one i saw from the public system last year for assessment, it was a good surprise - he was easy to talk to and had a good sense of humour also. I really hope you get one like him!! Or like the other on-referring psychiatrist i saw 15 years ago - she was soo nice and warm and easy to talk to (no wonder her own therapy books were full! But my GP back then was excellent and got me in for a referral recommendation appointment instead).

I am fingers crossed still for your new psychologist, @Flutterbug9 . I really sounds like the first appointment went well. And i think its OK for you to tell them how nervous you are about whether they will repeat the things from the previous ones or genuinely listen to you and your direction, etc. Its a good reminder for them of what is most important to you in treatment for how they show up to support you. 😊. I've had an EAP counsellor before that i didnt click with and felt was trying to fit me into their treatment mould, and thus did not rebook with them - and thats OK to do also, as you did with ypur previous one. You are strong for being able to say what you need and speak up when you are not getting it. 😊

A friend of mine i saw the other night is going to come meet me at a cafe, since i let her know i decided not to go into the city. She has an infant and so getting out of the house with adult contact who can also help interact with her bub is very helpful to her also. Her bub warmed up to me the other night because i was playing with a toy with him - we were astonished when he *left* his mum to come over to me and wanted me to walk him up the street! Normally he is so atrached to her that he cries, whether it is 10seconds or 30min apart from her (even with her parents). I am not a big child-person (no desire for my own!!) but i am always wanting to include my friends children and help support because having secure, safe childhood and teenage years and people they learn to trust is so important to me. And when parents are stressed, children pick up on that even if unconsciously - it comes out in tiredness at the very least, even when not intentional. So supporting my friends to have their own down-time for self-care is important to me also, so sometimes when i visit friends i also offer to babysit for an hour or so (depending on the age and interests of the child).

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely I hope your catch up with friend and little one goes well for you. How beautiful the little one warmed upto you and you were able to stroll along the street together! They can sense you are a living and trusting soul. 🙂

Im really pleased you liked my suggestion about calling where you usually attend. 🙂

When do you head back home?

Hello @AlwaysMyself, how’s your evening going? I hope you enjoyed your time with your friend!

I’ve been trying to gauge where you are at in terms of writing a really big reply to what you have sent me or give you a bit of a break. 😊 I am definitely better at reading people when I can see their body language 🤪.

obviously just looking out for ya and want to make sure I’m doing the right thing by you of course

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear driving home tomorrow, probably mid-morning. No need for an early start, so will just leave when I feel awake and ready. Only 3-4 hours drive, assuming no slow traffic.

@Chasingsunsets You're always welcome to write a long reply. 😊 Even if I'm not up to reading it at the time, I'll just wait until I am 😊. Should be back to having more time online this week I reckon, since I will be back home and "back to normal" except without working - thus more time to rest, forum, etc. After all, forum is therapeutic connection!

@Cuddlebear Just reading now your post on another thread about your encounter today. I am so so so sorry hun. That sounds very scary! I didn't realise you had a relative who was like that. I am so glad you are safe physically, and totally understand the freeze response and anxiety it caused.

Is your daughter aware?

Is it something you'd like to chat about? (Open door if so, but if you'd rather not that is also OK). I'm so sorry I was offline when you post about it, and wasn't there to support you in-the-moment. It's the type of thing I wish I could say "call me!", which obviously we can't do here but i would offer if it were a face-to-face friend.

I know you have only moved to that location in the time since I have been on the forum, and that even finding that place to move to was challenging.

BIG safe hugs.

I hope you are sleeping already, for your sake. But can understand if it is hard to sleep after that shock and anxiety.
