Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 @AlwaysMyself Said it’s ok to post here. 🙂 She reiterated it today earlier on. She’s visiting her dad in Sydney so not on forums as much.

It’s hard to get a good GP especially with multiple medical conditions. Most GP are particularly bad at mental health. I’m on an SNRI too which I’m currently tapering off. Then I will start a new SNRI. Many GP either say take this after a short appointment which isn’t really very good or scientifically best practice. Then there’s others who prefer a psychiatrist to do a medicine review. Personally my experience with public psychiatrists are very poor. Psychiatry has a history of doing more harm than good. But having said that they’re the specialists on mental health medicines and diagnosis too. Isn’t it frustrating having to do your own research then you still don’t get what you need.

Trying to find quality mental health care is very hard in Australia. It’s an epidemic and the lack of funding and quality doctors adds to poor outcomes for patients.

Just read today's messages here (slowly working through emails of yesterdays tags still where i can). @Flutterbug9 you are, as @Cuddlebear mentioned (thank you 🥰) always welcome to post here. Also much less depressing than only having my issues here! Variety is the spice of life, right?? 😅

Interesting we all have issues with finding a good MH GP. I feel extra glad that there is a specialist MH GP in my region now, even if the out-of-pocket cost is about $200 per appointment :money_mouth_face:😰. (I have no idea if those 2 emoji will come out on the forum or not lol.)

I'm feeling pretty flat, and have been having a lot of thoughts today, feeling that i want to start "preparing" - even though i made a commitment until the end of the year. As others often note, "I'm safe, but i dont *want* to be." Not sure whether talking about the feeling will help relieve it or feed it. Looked up the closest MH drop-in to where i am, but they're closed for the holiday break still. I'm feel so worn out, which i suspect is part of why i am having these thoughts today. Considering whether to call a line to chat to, but i really dont know if it will help at all or make it worse.

Appointment earlier was with my counsellor. We do video if one of us is out of town. Good to be flexible like that. @Chasingsunsets

@AlwaysMyself Sorry to hear you are feeling flat and having negative thoughts.

Is there something you can do to distract your thoughts?

due to you feeling worn out, could an early night help?

sending hugs and thinking of you 🤗

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thanks @Flutterbug9 . Was doing some of the paint by numbers most of today with a tv show streaming as distraction, but had to finish for the evening (and breaks during the day) because it hurts my back. I have a puzzle book, but i dont think i have the focus for that or a normal book whilst having the thoughts.

Reading and responding to 2 more threads from email tags has helped distract me a bit. Gets my head away from how *I* feel. 😅

Not sure that is how peer support is *meant* to work, but lets call it a positive side effect?

@MissGremlin thank you. Just read in other thread i replied to (after i responded, of course i saw ypur post!) that you're also having a rough night. Sending you mutual hugs back. And hugs to Casper because my dogs aren't with me. Which also means @Flutterbug9 's cats get cuddled from me too. 😉

Thankyou @AlwaysMyself ❤️. Casper is laying in the most awkward position but he is dreaming away so he's obviously comfy.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Haha Casper sounds like my 2 dogs @MissGremlin - likes to be in an awkward-for-human spot 😅🤣. My mother is currently looking after my 2 dogs whilst i am away, and on different nights this week both dogs have decided to join her bed 😅 and both times the dog decided it wanted to snuggle up against her (and in one case, roll over into pushing her further towards the edge of the bed). 😅. I'm lucky my mum likes my dogs enough lol !!

@AlwaysMyself haha oh that's classic 😂. I think I'm used to only having a tiny edge to sleep on and also like a smidgen of my pillow 😂.

Hi @AlwaysMyself

I can hear it's been a challenging day for you with the thoughts you've been having - that's no good 🥀 . It's wonderful to see the community rally around you 🤗 Keeping distracted by commenting on the forums sounds like a great strategy too!

You are not alone 🌸🌈🦋
