Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Oh how lovely! I love that you will print it out and put it up where you will see it 🥰🤩. what a great idea!

Glad Wilbur is eating normally and otherwise seems fine. 😊. I always feel reassured to get things checked with a vet too - especially since the dogs can't verbalise to us if something else is also wrong. One of my friends had to take her dog to the vet this week because it was vomitting, but thankfully it has been back to normal since and they think maybe it ate something naughty on a walk that upset its sensitive tum.

Hopefully by Monday Wilbur's ear infection will also be noticably better when the vet review him. 😊

How amazing of your support worker! 😍🥰 this made me so glad to hear. I love that they noticed and that they showed you they genuinely care (you're not "just a job" to them!) for you. I feel like that is the best christmas present ever! And the cherries on top too! Literally lol! 😍

I'd love to hear your thoughts on both any research review you do and on tapering. 😊

I won't be starting a new medication (per se) - it will just be coming off this one, no cross-tapering to risk seratonin syndrome thankfully.

I'm not sure yet the exact date I need to be 100% off the medication, i should find out mid-late January I hope. But if I start in the second week of Jan, and I think I might have until mid-March (at the latest) to be 100% off. So at best I have 2 months only 😬 which is less than ideal. But there is a high chance I won't be able to drive much when coming off from the "brain zaps", so i dont want to start until i return from Sydney (since i am driving).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you feeling after yesterday? A friend who sometimes comes was going to come for a few days today. They cancelled this morning. I was really holding on to them visiting.

Im just devastated that everyday is so hard to get through. That not a single soul thinks of me F2F. I’m very emotional and unstable from this taper. Lots of passive SI. I woke up this morning first thing in my mind was not good thoughts.

It’s so hard to have these feelings day in day out. It’s relentless. You know I just want to be loved and held and feel safe in this world. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve this miserable life. Im so sad. I can’t stop crying.

Im sick of being poor and having no monies and struggling.

I want something good to happen. I feel rejected by the world and I miss my mum.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I'm so sorry @Cuddlebear .*safely hugging you tight*

You did nothing to 'deserve' your situation. No one deserves to feel miserable, unloved and struggle to pay for basic bills, housing and food. No one deserves to feel unloved or not thought of.

I'm sorry to hear your friend had to cancel the visit. That would have been so nice to have some company for a few days.

Would they be avilable for a phone call for a little bit instead?

Did you and your daughter exchange a phone call or messages yesterday or today?

Would she be available to phone for a chat?

Your mum sounds like a lovely caring person; i know she meant a lot to you. Would you feel better or worse for talking about the positive memories and things she did to show you how much she loved you also?

I am wondering whether the things your mum did could be things that your daughter or friend(s) could also do as a way to show they care. Sometimes i find people don't know how to show they care until we give them ideas of what is most meaningful for us.

I know it is hard for your daughter to visit due to distance. Does she have any upcoming visit dates with you set up yet?

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you? I’m sorry I’ve been quiet I’ve found it hard to do anything.

Yes my daughter and I had zoom and we exchanged gifts. My friend sent some messages yesterday.

I only really have one friend and my daughter is my only family. So it’s hard for them to do as my mum did. my daughter always tells me how much she loves me. I love her with all my heart too.

we can’t afford visits.

What are u upto? How have you been?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Ah, my email notifications on my phone are not sending me push notifications properly! I was keeping an eye out yesterday for an from you @Cuddlebear but didnt see one with your usename. Glad i did a manual check this morning! 😊

Drive to Sydney was uneventful - that is good because it meant there was no silly dangerous drivers! 😊 Made it in good time, flowing traffic.

About to leave to meet my friend who is also visiting family in Sydney. I havent seen her for 1-2 years because we dont live nearby each other anymore, and she has children also which makes it hard to get away for a weekend.

I am glad your daughter did a zoom call and gifts with you 🥰🥰. I am glad she shows you and tells you that she loves you. Something to hold onto in those dark thought times.

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely. How are you? So glad the drive was uneventful for you and you arrived safely.

Im so glad that you are meeting your friend today. You’ll have much to catch up on and share news.

I hope your dad is well.

Yes was good to catch up and chat. Heading into warm days here. I’m just at home.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Wish i could share the nice cool day here with you @Cuddlebear . Low 20's.

Do you have aircon to keep you cool enough to be comfortable?

I realise i dont know - does Wilbur like to play? Does he like to fetch a ball? Or play tug with a toy?

(When i raised a guide dog puppy 15 years ago we were not allowed to teach them tug games, but we could play fetch with them.)

Coffee with my friend was good. I am glad she also could "be herself" and not mask. Apparently in the past year she has also learned a bit about ADHD and ASD masking and realises she has a lot of traits also and likely has well-managed adhd and maybe mild autism. This was so interesting to me because i have realised over the years the people i most connect with at social and work are on ASD spectrum, except for her and another friend. 😅🤣 and turns out she is most likely also lile me - lots of ASD traits that we just masked to be socially appropriate 😆.
