Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear how would you feel about calling/contacting the food pantry place to ask if anyone would be willing to deliver some items for you?

I know if it were me volunteering there I'd be very happy to help that way when someone has a disability/injury preventing them from being able to drive themselves. I'd value someone being courageous enough to ask. 🥰

It sounds like there is a big need for some community/volunteers who are available to do adhoc help (transport, delivery, social). Its the type of thing I'd like to do if i had enough energy to be able to setup a mutually-safe system for people to request what they need, and then to provide as much as able within the volunteer's ability to.

See what chatting with you inspires in me?? These ideas!

@AlwaysMyself Excellent ideas. Unfortunately I had to go emergency vet as Wilbur developed an ear infection today. It took hours there and now everyrhing is closed.

I will try after the public holidays. It’s hard I’m a coeliac too so getting the food I need from charity is not as easy. Still they might have some tinned corn or tuna and rice. Maybe even some lettuce. I’ll see what is open after the public holidays.

How was counselling? Did it go ok? Are you home relaxing tonight?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Glad you could get into the vet with Wilbur @Cuddlebear . Did they give antibiotics for his ear infextion, or what treatment can they give?

I hope he recovers from it quickly.

I didnt realise you wete caeliac. Yep that makes it much more restricted and harder to find as a lot of people have wheat-pasta as a staple.

I hope this coming week you can be creative (or boring & tasty!) with the food in your pantry still. If you try put any interesting combinations ai'd love to hear about them and whether or not they were good. 😊 sometimes i test out mixing a few things that are leftovers to use up.

Counselling appointment was ok today, mostly just talked about the past week and xmas plans and my plan for medication tapering after i get back from sydney. I was quite sleepy this morning so kept quite sedate myself. I still am lol. After appointment i went to the cafe my friends meet at (am there currently still) because i need to go into a shop to pick up a parcel.

I think i will go in to pick up parcel now, so then i can go home and rest. I'm still very sleepy tired. Not sure why. I think my body is just getting that post-stress fatigue now it is able to rest. You know when the body finally says "thats over now" and goes into rest-mode to recover? I think thats it. I hope it is, i hope im not getting sick.

because im tired im not on the forum much yesterday/today, but checking my tags where I am able. Especially yours 😊. Sometimes i check the message and then can respond later when i have more energy, plus gives me time to think on what to say too.

@Cuddlebear minor update of Totoro - he now has his grey, incl a slightly darker outline on the grey at the chest.

But in taking the photo i noticed a bit of the grey border that needs fixing before i gloss coat it 😅.

Merry Christmas - joint Totoro can be a Virtual Gift Giving 💝 right?? 🥰 shame i can't "wrap" the image for you.

Ooohhh if i were on my laptop i could put it in a Content Warning section for you to open 🤣🤣🤣

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hey @AuntGlow ,

Today/yesterday is a good example of me mostly-ignorning the forum when I am tired and don't feel up to being social. I think the forum suits me because I can choose who/how/when I engage with, and also because it is in "small doses" I guess. If I wasn't as busy or tired, I'd be online more because I think there is very good value in the peer support. It is also *a lot* less tiring than face-to-face where I have to physically travel and maintain appropriate facial expression. Plus there are more people here who are willing to talk about deeper topics - not just small talk or things of little importance to me (e.g. celebrities, movies, etc). I prefer conversation around personal impacts, beliefs, philosophy, sometimes history (if it is related to the individual).

I do have to be careful with my energy-giving in connecting as well. I try to prioritise. I think also that i am quite sensitive to others emotions - i have had to learn to not take on others emotions (eg their stress). I think this sensitivity could be why i feel so drained after groups 🤔 (together with the lack of interest in their conversation), and with friends who are high-energy or who I have to "carry the conversation" with (eg my grandma. She is not a good conversationalist, but as long as i feed topics and questions she enjoys it. But i feel so tired after). I wonder if its related (the sensitivity to others) to how I accidently pick up people's accents if i talk to them for an hour or so 😅 and of course when i travel overseas i start speaking English in a similar way to the country i go to. I don't mean to, but i often realise it after a bit. Its just automatic.

The people i prioritise being with are those who i can be myself around, and then family which is more obligation. My grandma is somewhere between - i can be myself but we dont have much in common so i have to try to find things that i think she will be interested it, but i also do want to see her rather than just obligation.

I watched a few of the insta videos last night. I think i might try to find her first videos to see if there is a bit of info about what "self-experimenting" means to her. 🤔

In terms of the content, I *agree* with the points and advice she gives. Although of the ones i watched they didnt really connect with issues I feel myself - i guess I've always been "who i am" and not what others want me to be; always known who i am. But i also self-censor myself I guess - i dont say "i have no interest in your conversation topic", or bring up topics i know they won't be interested in. However, as I've gotten older and more tired of people, I will reply to comments that I feel are judgemental towards things I like. For example, if a friend is talking about how they think people who do/like Taxidermy are creepy, I will now days chip in that "I like taxidermy." If they ask why i like it, it will explain. Its a way of hinting that the people they are "judging" invludes me, which i know they wont be realising or intending. It gives them an opportunity to clarify their intent or to retract or to learn more. So whilst i feel "different" from people and disconnected, i can still be myself. I dont actively pretend to like things i dont - i just listen patiently (and yeah feel more negative from the interaction).

Recall how i said my high-energy friends are really draining, even if 1:1 and even if i value them as a friend?

Those videos were mostly very high-energy too and quite difficult to watch/listen when tired 🤣😅. I had to do short-batches. Its just very full-on communication style.

Trying to conjure up the mild-excitement, but today I am too tired to be able to feel anything other than exhaustion at the idea of even my rarity-friend(s) chatting to me. I'll have to get back to you on that!

I love the idea of a psych-detective lol. If my psychiatrist 12 years ago had that attitude or interest i would have found benefit from staying in treatment with them. I find it rare for MH professionals to be interested in finding out what's actually going on when the "traditional" approaches don't work. Thank you. 🥰

I do wonder how my brain produces/responds to dopamine. It has always intrigued me that antidepressents dont act on dopamine - SSRI and SNRIs at least. But i recently read there is a new one in the works which is seratonin, nordrenaline *and* dopamine - tri-action. Makes me wonder...

From my understanding the adhd meds act on dopamine? It makes me curious how i would respond to them. If im in the clinical trial, the "plaebo" medication is one of them. So i perhaps i will find out. 3/4 group chance i might lol.

@AlwaysMyself He is just gorgeous and I love how you blended the colours perfectly. I’m going to print him on my printer and pop him on my fridge! He’s a beautiful virtual gift.

I’ve always loved all these characters many being from Japan! I have soooo many teddies of them too.

Thank you for putting all of this art project together can’t wait to see him glazed!

@AlwaysMyself Emergency vet gave antibiotics. It’s an allergy reaction. I see our vet on Monday just for a follow up because I worry too much. He’s had his first 3 drops and he is eating normally and also toileting is all good plus he’s playing and happy.

Im glad counselling was ok I know it’s been very rough for you and you are now embarking on a 12 month healing journey. I’m going to do some research into some of the things you’ve discussed and see what the systematic reviews have to say.

In relation to tapering when you are upto it I would love to discuss. I’ve done a lot of research on tapering now and would love to share to help you avoid the train wreck I was put in.

I’ll share some if my low cost meals too in case you get any inspiration for some yummy but cheap food.

So a good thing happened today. My support worker picked up I had no money as my shop for food was pretty dismal. She dropped in today and had done a shop for me as a Xmas present. I’m so lucky to have her and was in tears when she even had cherries in the shop.

@AuntGlow Thank you. Gee our brains can be hard work sometimes.

I wanted to say that I really appreciate all the support you give as a peer. I wish you a very happy and safe holiday time. You deserve a nice decent break. Take good care of yourself.
