Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@Cuddlebear @Jynx @AuntGlow

Feeling down, teary and ?disappointed after the friends over this afternoon. I checked in with myself over the 4 hours a few times and initially i felt nothing but tired (from the prep work of the house and food). Then i felt frustraited by the constant delays and distractions (i recall this has been a common issue that ive mentioned before). I felt annoyed when people don't communicate what's happening / what they're doing, or keep retrying the same thing that has already been said doesn't/won't work (single train of thought repeatedly). When they found my characters actions funny i didn't feel any lift from making them laugh - i felt that i couldnt care less which is quite unusual for me. Half way through the evening i wished i could have asked them to go home - but that would be rude so i bear with it and hope it improves. It did speed up a little which was good.

The highlight was the frozen treat one of them brought for dessert. It tasted nice. And watching the dogs play with toys at time.

@AlwaysMyself Lots of hugs and love to you.

You are such a loving, caring and gracious person towards others. You deserve to feel that love, care and graciousness towards yourself too.

Do you want to talk about your feelings? The lack of communication, the distractions, suggestions that are known not to work? No pressure only if you feel like it now or even tomorrow.

I can tell you are feeling down and disappointed after putting in a lot of effort prepping for today. If it helps to talk through any of it I’d be happy to listen.

I am glad you enjoyed the dessert and fur babies playing.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you @Cuddlebear . It is good to know/feel that i have a friend here i can talk to honestly and openly about how i feel about it. I feel bad that i get annoyed/irritated. I know they enjoy it still though. I'm a little concerned about how much i am begining to dislike it. And its not the activity itself, its those other factors that make it a negative rather than netural experience. But they are factors outside my control to do anything about.

I did suggest to one of them in passing that maybe in the future i need to consider whether to join them after dinner, rather than for dinner (which usually is at the start of the meet, unlike today when we met up earlier). He didnt dismiss the idea, but also didnt say anything. I think the problem with that would be that i would never know what time they were actually having dinner or finished and ready to play (and then up to 30min drive to get there).

I'm trying to think of ways i can reduce the negative effects on me. I don't like sitting there bored (when something is repetative or distracted), but i also don't have something i can do at the table subtly whilst pretending to be engaged that would keep me occupied.

I don't want to be rude to them.

I don't feel i can tell them i am actively disliking it. Why dont i feel i can? Because it probably would dampen their feeling about the meets, and they would probably feel bad (if i were to mentioned why i wasnt enjoying it - and 2 of the 3 would be very likely to ask why!) and then they would self-blame for their most-likely-ADHD behaviours (distraction, time blindness) which they have limited ability to control (and should they have to? I do want them to be themselves! But i wish things would stay focused and moving).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello my friend. How are you today?

I am better understanding the situation yesterday. It is something that you shouldn’t feel annoyed about it at yourself. You too are going through a lot right now and you are trying to socialise and be a good friend to others. They are enjoying themselves as you said but I’d like to see you feel better at the social gathering too. To have the opportunity to play without having the negative feelings.

I think the suggestion to join them after food is a good one. You could ask them to set a time for game time so you could be there and have the 30 minutes time to drive. If you feel an explanation is needed you could gently let them know that you are unwell and the symptoms you experience make it hard for you to have dinner plus the board game.

I think when you told one of your friends and they didn’t dismiss it that they are open to it. That is a good sign. It could also be just a snacks and board game event rather than a dinner and board game event?

I can understand not wanting to tell them why as you don’t want to hurt their feelings. At the same time the uncomfortable feelings you experience are real and leave you feeling sad and distressed.

Do fidget balls or similar help you at all? These are easy to take with you and not a distraction for anyone else.

I’m trying to think of ways thwt you can let out frustration or feelings of boredom thwt are not intrusive and easy.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself I’ll check with my mum about who she has her insurance through. I just use hers. But she pays a yearly fee. It basically public liability insurance. And yes, some market organizers will factor the cost of insurance into the market stall fee, often for one off markets. That way people don’t have to fuss around and organise it for themselves for a one off event. All our markets require you to get your own though. I do know that our insurance covers for 10million, but we did do a market end of November where they required cover of 20million so mum had to pay an additional $40 to increase her yearly insurance. You can also get one day insurance covers for.

our big country market monthly fee is $50 as a permanent stall holder and it’s $70 for casual. You also have to pay as a permanent if you’re away, unless you have a medical certificate. Our other is $55.

our insurance is through AIG Australia

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hey @AlwaysMyself how's your day unfolding so far?

I think @Cuddlebear is right, your annoyance and frustration makes total sense to me. It's kinda funny, as someone with ADHD I am known to repeat things, faff about a lot, get distracted easily, and occasionally need to be told things multiple times until it sinks in... and yet I also get very restless waiting for others, hate having to repeat myself, and get very annoyed hearing the same information over n over.... 😅

I also know that when I am stressed, overwhelmed, and/or burnt out, my tolerance and resilience can take a massive dip. So it could be that your threshold for irritation is lower, and those factors might feel more impactful than usual at the moment.

I think, if your friends have ADHD, they are likely to be understanding of your need to somehow occupy yourself during those moments where things are either off topic, or going in circles. Me, I always ensure I have my chains to fidget/stim with (I twirl em round my fingers and for some reason it is VERY satisfying), but also sometimes just play a game on my phone - something not too engrossing or that requires any real concentration (like candy crush for example). Some people have thought of it as rude in the past, but once I kinda explain that in fact it helps me to stay focused and engaged they're usually okay with it.

I think there's probably a way to be able to communicate your needs, and your feelings without necessarily saying you 'dislike' it - maybe express that you're a little frustrated, that you got a lot going on so you are more sensitive to things that cause frustration or irritation, and then hopefully you and the group can find some areas to compromise or find some ways to introduce a bit more structure so that you can stay engaged.

Are you and the GM close? Random idea occurred to me, that maybe you could ask about finding ways to entertain yourself whilst the others are faffing about. Side quests, mini games, or something... and if the others get a little jealous, you can say 'if you wanna join the side quest you gotta be ready'... idk if that would work, but food for thought maybe!!

Hiya @Bow 👋😊

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thanks @Bow - I'll have a look at those options. I think a per-occasion fee system would work best for me, as I can't see myself doing a stall every week (unless it was maybe a Friday arvo stall thats only 3 hours for example). However realistically it would be a long way off, because i would need to make/paint the items first and build up stock. (Also some concerns that its a big cost outlay beforehand, although the idea of selling them comes from the want to recoup the money so that I can do the painting for leisure without the expense... but i guess its the difference between doing a lot of it (expensive, ok if selling them) or doing them as an occasional treat (not selling them). I dont think there is a solution to this unless i did them "on request", but then i would be nervous of people being unhappy if it didnt turn out as imagined. I'm more comfortable with people buying "as is")

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Yeah I always worry that people won’t be happy with custom orders or repeat works @AlwaysMyself

This is some of what I make and sell. I have a heap of boxes of stock for market which I sell as is, but I also list pieces online that I remake and sell. So people aren’t going to get exactly the same pieces cause well…. all my rocks, pebbles, mosaic and sticks are individual.

I had a lady contactme recently after a particular pieces. But she wanted to glue it all down herself. So I put together a kit for me but she stuffed me around so much cause I couldn’t give her t her exact same coloured/sized rocks. I ended up telling her sorry, can’t do it.
