Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 i havent tried selling any before, just do them for myself so i pick ones that i like - or in the case of the squirtle i did was because if i decide i dont have space for it then it should be easier to find a home for it with someone who likes pokemon. 😅 I haven't done them much over the past 15 years; i stopped doing them when i started working and no energy. But before that i would often choose "functional" ones (like ones with pots) or for example i did a christmas tree - so i can use it as decor during xmas season (...its somewhere... in a box? Since my move...)

If i were to sell them, i'm do whatever i think would be popular for sale.

Where to sell them would be an issue. I think a market stall would be the most realistic, but i do not at all like the idea of sitting at a stall for 5 hours or so and maybe selling some, maybe not. Even just sitting there for 5 hours sounds exhausting and (physically due to lower back) painful.

So thus online would be a good way to list them for sale. But then they weigh so much that postage really isnt feesible. So it would have to be local-only pickup. And thats OK, but from experience giving things away or selling on FB marketplace adhoc, i find people are soo unreliable with coming at agreed times and i find that really stressful. I could do "local delivery" myself i guess for a fee 😅.

I doubt i will sell them, but its an idea i can explore next year if i want to.

I can understand the things you said about trying to sell things online. I completely get the back pain aspect, sorry to hear this is something you deal with.

last year when I tried selling homemade greeting cards I had done people don’t understand the time and work that goes into making things versus the asking price. Also people wanting designs or themes that are not there.

toward end of each year, the village where I live has a craft market that runs for couple hours. Is mainly for the village, for people to display their talents and sell items.

when I was in high school I learnt to make hand sewn patchwork covers. One I made whilst at high school was cot spread for eldest cousin’s first child. I made them out of enjoyment, giving cot spreads to work coworkers before they went onto maternity leave. Also made 2single bed size for 2 sisters, daughters of one of my cousins. I had thought about going back to making them, have realised between impact on my hands, the cost, storage required plus what to do with finished items, I won’t go back to making them.

I made my first ever resin thing as you know @AlwaysMyself but mine was just a decoration, quite big.

I suppose you could make resin Christmas Decorations (a bit late now) or coasters. You can buy resin circular moulds

Sorry to hear you are having quite a few family problems @Shaz51 including Mr Shaz not sleeping well.

Remember to look after yourself.

I hope Mr Shaz starts getting some sleep

Is the recliner for him or you?

Sending you big hugs

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you?

Im really glad the sessions with the counsellor are going well. It sounds like you are getting to know one another better and are able to start going a little deeper now.

I sure do understand that having someone physically there to sit with you is so needed and that phone/online isn't the same thing. Even-though it doesn’t change things the comfort of having another human there is much more beneficial. The counsellor is right in that isolation is not conducive to really getting through the dark times. All the grounding in the world doesn’t replace that need for a person who cares actually being there. So many times I wish so much I could have just a loving soul sit with me and even give me a hug. The MH services just tell you to breathe through it or do some art etc. While I understand this can help there’s just times where an actual human with me is what I really would benefit from. Thank you for sharing this because it makes me feel more normal and that it’s not asking for too much.

The Auslan course sounds quite good in that it is self paced and less pressure attending a bunch of classes. You’re very smart I think you’d cope well with that structure if it’s what you decide to do.

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how’s your day going?

I think we could do Totoro together if you like? Thank you for putting up their names and colour photos. I was able to take a look online to see them with better magnification too.

It sounds like a certain fur baby was having some naughty snacks in the kitchen! They are so cheeky with food and I wonder if they are practicing their food brake for Xmas lol! 😂 How were the patty cakes? They sound very yummy!

@Shaz51 😘💜

So tough with hubby not sleeping - it can make everything else so much harder hey. Hope he's able to slow down soon so you can both get in some solid rest 🤞

@AlwaysMyself just under 50 haha but that's a lot for just overnight! I've come back after a week to over a 100 though... 😋

Pouring resin seems like you can get pretty creative with it - I've seen some pretty cool stuff on social media - like a table made from two huge planks of wood, but with some of the natural curves of the tree in the 'pouring space' - they filled this with some blue resin and other details as well as a tiny model diver, and made it look like a cave-diver scene with the details of the wood forming the walls of the cave.... I hope I've described that ok haha I can try to find it later though if you can't picture it!!

I think @Captain24 has been making coasters and stuff with resin, so she might have some ideas too!

Heyoooo @Flutterbug9 @Till23 @Cuddlebear 👋😊

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 i used to make cards for friends birthdays myself. Agree they take a lot of time, and most people do not want to spend the money for that when they can buy mass-produced cards cheaper. I think its the same with other arts and crafts too. Hence i have never looked to may a living from it.

@Cuddlebear excellent, we shall do Totoro. 😊. Most images have him as grey, but a few have a more brownish shade for him, its interesting.

It is a cute movie that its from, "My Neighbour Totoro" - a child moves to a new place and explores the nearby woods and meets/follows Totoro. I forget much else about it though 😆 i do not have a good memory for tv or movies! But i like the character designs. I like the "dust bunnies" especially lol. They are basically animals made of dust from the old house i think. 😅

I spent the afternoon having a sleep to pass the time in my low mood. Then got up and watched tv series with my mum, which kept me mostly distracted even though still feeling low.

Tomorrow morning i am going to the local mixed market with my mum and grandma. Good to get my grandma out of the house and see her. Walking around the market is good basic exercise too (better than none!).

Still don't *feel* anything positive inside. My friend enjoyed the craft. I recall thinking when he said he was enjoying it that i wish i felt that inside too. But instead i felt tired and wanting quiet (iver stimulated from energetic conversation perhaps?) but also a little relieved/glad that the moulding worked out ok; not as tricky/fiddly as i thought it might have been.

@Jynx @AuntGlow

I wish i felt i wanted to live. It would much less unpleasant during my downtime if my brain didnt keep reminding me. I say "reminding me", but its more when i am currently feeling low mood the past few days (as opposed to just feeling exhausted) that i feel/think/know i wish i wasnt making the choice to continue the next 12 months. I am, i will. But i just wish i felt that i wanted to. Having to eat, dress, and (when theyre returned tomorrow afternoon) look after the dogs is a chore. Let alone actual chores like laundry (postponed to tomorrow) or putting things away, or cooking or grocery shopping. And i am not enjoying downtime - whether craft, tv, painting, coffee meets. But i am glad i am noticing this before any change in medication, else people would put it down to a reduction in medication. I think ive been too tired to be able to feel low mood a lot of the past few years.

I wish my post was happier.

@Cuddlebear give Wilbur a pat from me?

Actually, i have a question about assistance dogs that you might be able to answer! My friend asked me how an assistance dog knows if its on a "working walk" or a "sniff walk" for pleasure. For him, he's considering a hearing-assistance dog so it may be a bit different. I had assumed a guide dog would always be "on the job" mode whilst out walking (to guide you!), and would know that at home out of harness it might be "off duty" unless called.

What is the reality of it, for you? If i can ask that is. 😊 you're my expert lol. No better truth than lived experience.
