Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Thanks for the hugs 🫂 @AlwaysMyself , @Jynx @Chasingsunsets

Yes , it has been tough for over a week,so far

over and over the one thing all the time

With conversations with his daughter and 2 of his sisters who all have some kind of health problems, he has had enough of everything

We did get out and had a walk today and then we brought cream buns which has made my diabetes high tonight

Watching TV and then going to bed soon , hoping to get some sleep will be good

Helping Daughter pick up a second hand recliner tomorrow with her in the city

Sending you lots of hugs my friend 🧡

Hi @AlwaysMyself, I’ve been following along. Happy to chat a bit, if you like.

Plaster statue looks lovely. I like the cute feet when looking at the back.

I remember watching Bones years ago on TV, vague memories though. There is only one show I watch most days on TV. Every evening I watch DVDs, currently watching NCIS, have almost all episodes

@Chasingsunsets yes, on ice cream i believe - a softserve type of swirl. I didnt want to paint it white though, needed something to contrast the bodies, so i decided pink. I dont like pink as a colour, but i decided it would look most normal, since purple ice cream is less common.

@Shaz51 a cream bun sounds a nice treat, although yep got to be careful with the blood sugars vs insulin.

If you want to chat over the family dramas, know that I have a listening ear and a shoulder for tears. Family relationships can be hard. Is it common for him to have ups and downs with his daughter and sisters? Do you think it will blow over or get resolved? Or might be a more longterm upset?

I hope it is nice for you to see your daughter tomorrow? I hope picking up the recliner goes well - new furniture feels nice 😊 and esp if its comfy like a recliner! ...have you put claim to first functional-testing of the chair rights yet? 😉

I hope you have a really good and restorative sleep when you go to bed, to give you energy for tomorrow. I know you often wake up really early during the night. ☹️

@Flutterbug9 thanks mate. That means a lot. I'm still a bit ... mmm.. in my thoughts tonight. Sometimes get abit worse, then try to find something to distract myself by looking into. (Maybe i can find somewhere selling a good plaster mix for 3d figures, for example! Hours of online research potential there...)

What show do you usually watch?

I watched NCIS for many years - from season 1 until about... season 6 or 7 i think? I think i still own seasons 1-5 maybe? Then later seasons i could watch on streaming services once i got those. I watched it each week when it was on free to air during my teen and young adult years. Gosh i dont even remember which years it aired lol. I just remember my mum, sister and I would all watch it together. They had great character development, real quirky and not like a lot of shows back then.

Haha almost finished getting through my tags from tonight!! Buuuut it always gets a little hectic in this last hour @AlwaysMyself so I got....14 waiting for me for tomorrow 😅

Would you ever work with resin?

I will hear your answer tomorrow hehe. Hope you have a restful evening hun, and ty for the chats 💜

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Good luck @Jynx , you'll have 100 more tags before your shift tomorrow. 🤭

I havent tried (pourable) resin before, but a friend just bought some so i might try some with them. My main barrier with resin is.... what do i do with the item(s) I make?? 😬 (yes i have this issue witu the plasters too! But i feel like resin art / keyrings / jewelry is now quite common at markets, so the idea of being able to sell them is not likely... but then again theyre lighter to post if theyre small items like earings or keyrings).

Ive used FIMO/polymer clay before, but my fingers and wrists get very sore from it because of the stiffness and need to warm it up to use it. I get arthritic-like pain from it.

Bit of info about me, first time dark thoughts almost took control was when I was mid 40’s. In my head I had a full plan of things for me and pets for following morning. I went to gp instead.

Distractions can definitely help at times. anything to keep the mind busy. My time consuming item is family tree. Music on and I become fully engrossed in researching to try to find, some times, one link or bit of info.

researching who, where etc sells good quality plaster sounds great idea. Hoping it’s not overly expensive plus available in Australia.

tv show I watch is called Tanked. Is about business in USA that designs, makes and installs fish takes in lots of different sizes and styles. Fish tank the shape and size of grand piano, fish tank inside small VW are 2.

I have lots of DVDs plus CDs, eclectic taste

Do you have a preference is design of plaster statues that you make @AlwaysMyself

You mentioned about possibly making and selling them to help with expenses. Do you have community market (or similar) as possible place to set up a stall?
