Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you @MissGremlin , i don't mind at all. At times when i've read a few of your responses places i have felt the same similarity too.

It is in an odd way nice to know that there are a few others who have similar thought challenges to me. I know theres a few others on the forum too, we're not alone.

I wish no one experienced it at all - hence "in an odd way nice". Its not nice that anyone feels this way. But since we do, im glad we've all gathered to the forum to meet.

Caught up on my days messages now, so shall see if i can sleep. If i cant ill come back on. Fingers crossed my midday nap doesnt cause insomnia tonight.

@AlwaysMyself it's definitely not a nice way to feel but it is helpful to know that we aren't alone and that others understand what it's like.

Hope you can get a good night's sleep, fingers crossed for you. Night night ❤️

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hey @AlwaysMyself appreciate you sharing with us how much of a struggle it can be - even though you've made this decision to stick things out, doesn't mean that habitual kinda thought process isn't gonna still crop up, and that can be hard to sit with.

Are you expecting having a medication reduction? Or is it just a possibility being discussed or something? Could be good to speak to your team about extra support/ideas for coping you can turn to if you are, cos that sounds like it could be challenging indeed.

If there's anything you think we could help with please let us know - helping with ideas for safety plans, regular check-ins, accountability buddies (reading about how you're struggling with your chores is such a MOOD), all stuff we can suss out for ya 💜

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Jynx for the PAT trial (hopefully in March??) I need to be off my medication. I plan to discuss a titration off plan with my GP when i see him in a week, because i think i am at a high chance of "body zap" withdraw symptoms (i get them after missing a dose, but less severe than i did years ago) so i reckon starting as soon as i can in early-mid Jan would be good (rather than 4-6 weeks rushed). Till mentioned a 2024 deprescribing guide the RANZCP approved/support, which i read into and will print some info guide for GP out from. However i dont have 20-40 weeks to titrate over 😅, but an extra 2-4 weeks is better than none!

I've never a "safety plan" as such. I guess even if its when i am distressed (noting a lot of the time i'm not distressed, i'm calm-rational-suicidal-thoughts) i have always known/remembered my various options - contacting a friend/family or crisis service, writing/scribbling, distraction (tv, cleaning, music...)). But most commonly just good ol' sitting through it alone with self-control until i fall asleep. I know i can keep myself safe if i want to; i just need to keep wanting to 😅 (or "willing to" is more accurate).

I did do my laundry today *and* packed 2 boxes of my ex's things for him to take today. Still can't find my xmas decor box though 😆 which is what i was looking for initially.

Having food-bars is working well for me to ensure i am still eating nutrition without effort. 😎. Counting down only 3 more days of work.

Motivation to do a small bit of housework (once i finish work) each day - even just putting away 1 or 2 items - would be good. I do have to be careful not to do too much or i will end up in physical back pain or fatigue and thats a big trigger for my thoughts.

Hey @Cuddlebear , checking-in how you are today and sending more hugs. I know every day has been a big challenge for you, and as I said elsewhere, please, please do feel able to talk about it if you want.

I went to the markets this morning with family, and it was alright. not too tiring - just "normal tiring". Maybe also because I had a nap between doing my laundry and going to the market 😅. I'm not even 40 and I'm having naps a few hours after getting out of bed 😂 !! Old before my time for sure.

I think I'm feeling OK about heading to work tomorrow morning - not feeling as exhausted as I have been on sunday nights. I guess I have had a lot of extra rest/sleep this weekend.

Wondering if you have anything planned for the week?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Oh true @AlwaysMyself well I hope even just knowing what the reasoning/goal is helps you to navigate some of the tougher days ahead.

That makes sense if there's not as much of that panic-aspect to it. One of the ones I think you could still potentially do is that I've seen many safety plans with a section for 'reasons to live/stay'. Only if you reckon it could help, cos the thought is crossing my mind that maybe being reminded of things that we can't connect to due to anhedonia could be rough. Food for thought anyway.

Oh wow, hope there was maybe a little bit of closure or satisfaction from that (even though you didn't find the decor, rats!). I'm the same w food bars ahaha I found decently priced ones at aldi that I don't mind!

I have been struggling heaps with keeping my house tidy too, so I feel you. Someone once recommended to me that each time I leave a room, look around for something that doesn't belong. Trying to build that one up, but it's not always easy!

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Jynx "reasons to live" is a good idea in theory, but you're spot-on about the anhedonia. The purpose of 2026 is to try to find a reason/want to live, because I don't have one for myself. It's been 20 years of "because it would upset/hurt mum" - and whilst that still remains true that it would upset/hurt her, I'm tired of being selfless in that regard. It doesn't cut the mustard anymore. (I realise that is a really weird saying, and I have no idea the origin of it or original meaning that came to be...). So currently my "reasons" would be empty 😓 and would probably reinforce the SI.

I'm reading through the Self-care Toolkit thread for ideas though. Although often when my thoughts are strong enough to be distressing, I don't have the ability to focus enough to read, listen to a podcast, or do a cross-stitch (I need to finish that cross-stitch lol, I started it last christmas when I had the panic-attacks. it's very large and I haven't picked it up since February I don't think). And I'm trying to avoid food-based comforts due to health.

There is still a lot of his things around the house, but that's OK. there is no rush. I'll just pack things into boxes as I feel like it or want the space.

I'm really good at moving things to the room they *should* live in, but that's where they often end -- in a box of "stuff for this room, to be put away". 😬 Especially since I still haven't unpacked everything from the April move, so a lot of things don't yet have "homes" to go to if they've been rifled out of a box as-needed. 😑 (maybe this is why I am good at packing my ex's things into a box to offload to him 😅 I can pack, but not unpack! haha)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

hey @AlwaysMyself just catching up on this thread. sounds like you've got lots going on next year with your goal around finding a reason/want to live, taking time off work, tapering meds and starting the trial! sorry to hear that things felt extra heavy last week, but i'm glad you were supported by the community 💙 how are you holding up this week?

also loveeeee the painting you've been doing. idk how you paint it so precisely, i wish i had that skill!!
keen to see how the next one turns out!!

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you for checking in also @rav3n , I very much appreciate it (and not for granted). This week has so far been better - I guess also distracted with work, but Sunday was also an OK day. Felt appreciated by my coworkers today who bought me a bunch of flowers and had coffee to say farewell as tomorrow is my last day with them (and I will be taking leave from my permanent role also for next year as you will have read).

I am a little hesitent to 'check-in' with myself mentally this afternoon because it is nice not feeling negatively for a short while just been blank. But I know that if i dig at all beneath that superficial temporary layer the underneath is not so pleasant. So for now I am not introspecting and I'm just going to be surface-neutral instead and keep my mind busy with activity.

I have done some very detailed painting of figures from a boardgame in the past; I should grab one out and take a photo of it to show you. I guess it is a mix of a practiced steady hand, a fine brush without bend/loose bristles, an infinite number of touch-ups (many hours lol), and occasionally the removal of my glasses - I am short-sighted, and sometimes see even clearer if it's up close and I take off my glasses 😂. The thing about paint is.. if you make a mistake, you just wipe it off and/or paint over it.

I've been looking a little more into the idea of buying or (more likely) making my own moulds to cast my own plasters to paint and/or sell. I realised that since I can sit and paint for a few hours at a time without getting too tired, then I could do that whilst sitting at a market stall if I did want to sell them. Make that my "painting time". 🤔. Would need to build up a stock of painted & unpainted ones for sale though before any such stall would be worthwhile. But it's a idea if I decide to cast my own plasters.

@Chasingsunsets @Cuddlebear

I also ended up using resin for the first time on the weekend with my friend.

@Jynx @Till23 was much easier than I expected! Not if you were to spill it and need clean-up though lol ! But the moulded items came out great with such little effort! No risk of crumbling on de-moulding like with the plaster of paris.

I have been reading in to the different plaster mixes I can get to be stronger than the plaster-of-paris I have. Apparently there are "alpha" and "beta" grades (based on the dehydration/heat process), so I bet the cheap art stuff I have is "beta" grade. But I also saw that some places sell "resin plaster" which is a hybrid, and I also read a how-to that went over mixing plaster of paris and resin together (when wet) to create a stronger hybrid -- rather than purchasing the expensive hybrid-powder. I might give that a go with my friend's resin & my plaster of paris and see how it turns out on a small scale. See if its strong enough to my liking.

The thing I dislike so much about craft is the mess it makes 😰 and the time for clean-up and pack-up. 🤕

But if I was doing it weekly I could justify dedicating a desk to it in the corner of a room permanently setup (as long as my dogs don't have access to the room unsupervised lol).
