Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Morning @AlwaysMyself 😊, wow only three days left next week that’s not long at all, you are nearly there!

You sound determined for next year!! That’s so awesome, sometimes all this takes grit and hard work hey. To build purpose, challenge our mindsets and find and feel fun.
In some way we have to work harder than people without mental health issues as ours is a constant battle however everyone has their own battles that we wouldn’t know I guess.
I see how much strength and determination you have it does shine through! Even if you don’t see or feel it, it shines through strongly here despite your challenging times.

I understand chronic SI, I guess we don’t always have to reach out to support lines when they are just thoughts as such and we are feeling safe, it’s about what’s going to help us in the ‘now’ of those moments to either let the thoughts pass in a stream or distraction of some other kind you find helpful or effective. A cold shower as an example, other distress tolerance techniques. It does appear you have become very good at your distress tolerance- which is such a big credit to you. I am on the sidelines here applauding you, getting to where you can manage some distress is a big win. However it doesn’t mean it’s easy to be in that distress of course 💯.

Calling a helpline or web chat is another option in your tool kit I guess that can be utilised. That’s how I see it anyway. To make contact if that would help at that time. Sometimes I have found it does matter who’s on the other end and whether the interaction is helpful. So even though off putting if an interaction hasn’t been all that helpful, I have been known to mention to mates and others it doesn’t have to stop at one chat or call, you can always call or chat again if things haven’t changed or got worse.

I do wonder though if something could be done with these thoughts, just something to consider 🙏 but I do hear it wouldn’t be as easy to find a solution or answer sometimes with thoughts like this compared to topics maybe like finance etc. I wonder what you think about this.

I just realised it’s Friday and you may be having your weekly appt today. So sorry if this is a bit heavy on top of your appt. I do wonder though what having less chronic thoughts of SI would mean for you?

I hope you can have a restful day post appt💜

I start tomorrow 😜, long one tomorrow then a couple long hours to follow. So I’ll likely not be on here really so definitely no rush re reply.

Always lovely to chat 🫶

Hey @Till23 !! Oh thanks for telling me where I can find you! So I just search it up?? Sorry still a bit of a rookie here lol. I am not sure if have posted there! I know I posted on one of you recent ones for IT, re our support button and error msgs.

I did see you speaking to @AlwaysMyself about no really visiting the group tag ones, let me know if you’d prefer I don’t tag you in the group ones. Don’t want to bother you 😊. Thanks for telling me where I can find you so we can have somewhere to chat at times 🙏

could you send me a link to your thread? ☀️🙏

I hope you are having a good day my friend

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you? I’m so glad you’ve only got 3 days left of work. 🙂 Then a very well deserved 12 months off.

I think the 12 months off work will help with chronic fatigue. You’ll be able to just focus on yourself without the pressure of work. It’s a really wise plan and gives you the time to focus just on you.

It’s not so much whether you sleep but also the quality of sleep from my understanding. Obviously not sleeping creates fatigue but the quality of sleep also impacts. Many anti depressants etc. can affect the quality of sleep and can even significantly affect REM sleep. It can be a side effect. I see a sleep specialist at the hospital and have several sleep disorders mostly caused by medication.

Love the idea re Diploma in Auslan. You’ve already got some skills and it’s something you enjoy so it’s a wonderful idea! How long does the Diploma go for? Is it online or F2F?

Yup if you are not in too much pain and buggered taking dogs for a walk once a day is so good. Gets a bit harder in summer as either have to go super early or once it’s really cooled down. The pavement can still be quite hot even once sun sets so keep an eye out for that.

I remember you mentioning training the dogs potentially as therapy dogs and visiting places where people can benefit.

Going to the pool is great and so much less risk of injury too. Works out all parts of the body and it is fun. plus can do all year round as most public pools have a heated pool in winter.

Setting up a local craft group is great. Maybe the local library or community centre can provide a free space or it could be an online group as well. People can craft whatever they like that way and make some social connections.

The MH course is good and you could potentially do the prac hours via online. I think a few people have mentioned that course on the forums. I wonder if there’s a thread? Not sure.

Board games are fun we used to play every Friday evening with family when I was a kid or on a Sunday afternoon. It’s a fun way to be social and with a few snacks on hand everyone can have some fun.

Didn’t realise there was a Aus and NZ support group online. What’s it like?

Xmas plans at home sound good. I know it’s a hard time as well but I’m glad you’ve got people to spend it with.

Oooh 3D plaster figures sound fun. I’ve never tried doing them. Do they come in a kit? Yeah could possibly sell at local markets etc. Less issues that way with fragile items via post too.

Whatever you choose to do and how much you choose to do is all up to you. No pressure at all. The local community centres will re open after new year so there might be some stuff there you like or at local library as well.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hi @Chasingsunsets and @Cuddlebear ,

Decided to stay home this arvo after my appointments, since ive been quite tired. I think i made the right call. Even just my mum chatting to me for past hour felt tiring.

Thankfully my appts with counsellor don't feel tiring. Perhaps because i feel OK to be honest about whatever is in my head. And perhaps because by nature i am an introspective thinker and enjoy thinking/discussing how internal perspectives have been formed. I am not a very high-emotion person generally; i think my counsellor was quite suprised (but not in a bad way) to see me arrive emotional last week. Usually i may have a tear when talking about death desires, but beyond that very rarely. She had actually been concerned i wasnt connected enough to my emotions because a lot of how i present it very logical & thought-out 😅. I do a lot of processing by myself at home, so by the time i have an appt i am not emotional about it anymore usually.

We had a good discussion today about the conflict between my having been taught that we should seek to not "require" from other people and be able to self-suffice in life emotionally, vs the very real nature of humans as social animals meant to have interpersonal connection. And how for me when i have dark moods i feel a wish to have someone physically with me to give me a hug and sit with me, even though i know it doesnt do/change anything - and that online or messenger or phone doesnt meet that want feeling for company. (I suspect @Cuddlebear will be reading along and nodding your head at this need for physical company to sit with during those times, even if they cant do anything practically to aleviate it?)

It was nice to have her validate that those feelings are OK and natural, and that in other cultures people would not be taught that they should be able to be mentally healthy when isolated physically during distress. I'm sharing that with you both in case hearing this also validates any similar feelings you may also have.

And this for me is within a context of where I like myself as a person, i know i have value, etc and i am not trying to seek that reassurance from others. I am comfortable with who i am - warts and all. I think a lot of people "assume" that lonely or depressed people (or is it suicidal people?) dont like themselves, or at least thats what i perceive from interactions with people (not here!) who havent taken the time to listen to what MH challenges i have - they're well intent, but its almost always about being able to see value in myself or that i can "keep going and push through" (of which doing so has caused me to get so burnt out because I did try to just keep going!!).

I guess you're right about being able to call back on a helpline if you didnt find the person helpful to get a different person 😅. And they'd never have to know, so their feelings wouldnt be hurt 🥺. Unless their computer tracks mobile numbers and the frequency of calls... i could ask someone here that who volunteers lol; not sure if they're allowed to say how it works behind the scenes though!

If i did the MH peer worker training, even if I never used it for paid work, I reckon it would help me be a better (more effective) support to both friends f2f and on here. 😊 "valuable life skill" - like my Auslan fluency i guess!

@Cuddlebear the Diploma of Auslan would be online. Self-guided from their written materials (and own research i believe for assessments), except for 1 practical language day online and also once per term (4 times during the year) have an assessment meeting for the presentation requirements. It looks like i will get access to the theory for each level at the start of each term, and work through it at my pace as long as i submit by the end of term - so i can do it quicker if i want. However not sure if i would be able to start on the following terms work in advance of that term though. But thats ok, i can just do all the written parts at the start of term, take a mid-term break, and then do the presentation assessment closer to its scheduled online meeting date.

I'd be curious to do a proper sleep study. I've only had the at-home test for sleep apnoea (which i have a cpap for, for many years now). I do suspect i dont have much deeper levels of sleep.

Oh dear, i am getting nudges from one of my dogs (the one in the photo with tan eyebrows).. she wants dinner. But its not yet 5pm!! Normally she only starts this at 530pm for her 6pm dinner time! She is being very demanding - more than usual. She nearly knocked my phone out of my hand typing this 🤣

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I might be around online a bit this evening too @Chasingsunsets @Cuddlebear , unless my mum wants to watch TV with me or something.

@Cuddlebear here is the 3 plasters i have still to paint, if you'd like to choose one to do together. 😊 although 2 of them are specific characters - i'll post them with their coloured animation picture.

if this capybara is from somewhere, i dont know where. But i do see them a lot in japanese stores. I just liked his having a pot i can put a plant in.

this one above is Totoro, by Ghibli. Heres a coloured image of him:

And this is Kuromi (by SanRio) below:

All of these ones were imperfect with holes/bubbles in the plaster, but i chose the best one i could find. It has a top and bottom, as its a little container space inside.

Here is a colour picture of Kuromi:

But sometimes i also see purple versions of her like this:

Uh oh! I just heard an "Oi [dog name]!" from my mum downstairs. 🤣. Apparently my mother went to the bathroom and returned to find my dog had licked the raw cupcake mixture out of a patty pan on the bench! (Yeah, she's easily tall enough, thats a borzoi for you!). Thankfully only from one patty pan. And she would not leave when told "out" now 🤣.

This is the one that was just demanding food from me! I even gave her and my other dog 1cup of kibble "in advance" of their dinner, and since the other dog didnt want "just kibble" she ate his portion too. So she has now had 2 cups of kibble *before* going downstairs and stealing mixture!! 2 cups = half her dinner/daily amount.

Uh oh, just heard the yell again. Now she did it whilst mum was *in* the kitchen! 😮 shes usually cheeky but not naughter. She has now been shut out of the room, for good reason.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I'm feeling pretty low mood again this evening. I don't know why. I'm not even as tired as I was as I've had a rest for awhile now, and mostly rested yesterday and today.

Not any thoughts specifically unless i consciously ask myself "what's up?" Just on verge of tears and glum. I wish i felt like i wanted to live. But dont worry, i've said I'll give this 12mth off work a go to see if it can be tolerable again. But i still dont feel that i am doing it for my own sake. I guess thats what the aim is though, to see if over the time off i can find something that makes me want to.

I don't have any specific reason to feel like shit. But i guess depression doesnt work like that.

@AuntGlow @Jynx @Ru-bee @rav3n not sure who is working and has time. Not urgent, i am safe and can survive alone. Normally i wouldn't reach out when feeling like this (not "bad enough") but testing out to see if reaching out earlier in the process helps, after chats to counsellor today about the comfort of company.
