Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

You are welcome to triple and quafruple post if you wish @Chasingsunsets ! 🥰😋 i spent the evening watching a tv show with my mum and then caught up on my post-backlog (which is wyhy i was still online at 10:30pm oops).

Just having a lunch break from work at current. Didn't sleep well again last night (hot, aching) but working from home today so i was able to take a 1hr nap during the morning after starting work lol. I can either work longer hours later today or tomorrow or take it out of my accrued flex time - will choose based on workload later. I've been data-problem-solving all morning.

How are you?

Any plans upcoming? Do you walk Indi every day?

@AuntGlow Hello lovely how are you? Have you had a good week?

Im doing best I can and unfortunately still really struggling. It’s been really hard to even access the support I need with not many if any real options for MH in my area. I try to do so many things to help myself but don’t make progress. Lucky to have you and others here.

Aaahhh thanks @AlwaysMyself 😅 re posts lol.
Ohhh yessss I am still very behind not sure how I am actually going to catchup 😜 but it’s awesome and I feel very lucky that people post and tag me it’s really awesome!! I really enjoy seeing the emails come through even if I can’t get on the forum, just feel bad I sometimes can’t get back to people in a good time frame. But that’s ok it is what it is 😊

Hope work has been going ok, data problem solving sounds challenging, hope you are winning !

naps are life I think. Was going to try to have one today but wasn’t able to got distracted 😅

I’m ok, just quietly keeping on, rolling with the punches really, just need to find a large power station where I can recharge my batteries hehe.

What are you up to this evening?

I try to take her everyday the only time we don’t go is if I am working over our walk time. I am not normally up early enough to take her in the mornings but I should 😜. Plus more birds to see in the morning 😊

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

haha yes, it was - shhh don't tell anyone. @AlwaysMyself 😝

Thank you for understanding the triage system. Delays never mean we don't care. 💖

I understand what you mean when you say anhedonia contributes to burnout and fatigue... especially with the growing burdens and unspoken expactations placed upon you within the relationship. I wonder if this new change in work will help? Speaking of - do you have any more updates for me?

I am glad to hear you have a couple of friends you could potentially reach out to, mum as well. What's mum's advice been so far?

And when is your next counselling appointment?

I am curious to know if your support group is the same people each week? I am just thinking that maybe you could explore social connections with them too? (I am not sure if that's allowed, but that is absolutely something I would do hahah)

Second last week before work finishes - whoo!! I will absolutely be celebrating this countdown with you. 🥳 💪

Hey @Cuddlebear 💖

I am doing well, thank you for asking.

It sounds like things are still really overwhelming for you... what are you needing most support-wise right now? I am just wondering if we could explore some online options?

Also, have there been any small changes in your symptoms? I can hear you are doing your absolute best, so I am really hoping they ease up for you... sending the biggest of hugs your way. 🫶

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear thinking of you. *hug*. Hoping that only seeing the gp fortnightly will be OK in the hope that your mood & tapering effects stabilise during this time also.

I forget if you have a psychologist support?

Do you get a new MHCP with 10 session in January? (I know some telehealth ones bulk bill)

Like @AuntGlow i'd love to know if/how i can best support you online. 🤗

I expect to be online during the christmas-new year break (even if abit busy as i will be visiting my father)

@AuntGlow Hello lovely how are you? Thank you so much for what you’ve written.

I think I really need to have connection with people. Online things to explore would be helpful for me. I’m not sure what is available and trying to find things online has been a nightmare.

Being able to reach out to people to chat here too is really good.

The symptoms are a teeny tiny bit better but still acute. Most of the time I’m getting through minute by minute.

@AlwaysMyself Hello my beautiful friend. How are you? Last day of work for the week for you. I hope it goes very quickly.

I only have the 10 visits which are used up. I did have some psychology at local mental health wrllbeing and they are all used up and that service has to exit me as they can only support short term time frame. There’s nothing else. I need ongoing psychology to be honest 😞

The best support is having people here to engage with especially at the moment and during the Xmas new year times. I’ll be alone and having kind souls to chat with and provide mutual support would be so very helpful. Everything shuts down too and people are busy with family and friends.

Im really glad you’ll be visiting your father. Is he far? I don’t think you’ve said much about him.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AuntGlow

I am hoping that time off work will mean a decrease in chronic fatigue symptoms, which in turn will give me the ability to engage in activities, and I am *hoping* that is will over time also result in being able to feel positive/enjoyment from some activities.

I heard this morning that supposedly poor-sleep can result in your memory primarily remembering/storing negatives and not positives. "Preferentially consolidates" is the term the journal articles are using, as i just searched it.

I usually sleep OK, but i'm still fatigued after so i wonder if fatigue generally does the same...

Currently plan is to take all of 2026 off (12mths) - even without sick leave. Use up sick leave as much as GP will approve (and accrued), and then take "leave without pay" for the remainder, being financially supported by my mother.

That's my mum's advice 😅. (Did i ever mention she is a registered psych?)

I have a few ideas of things I would like to do during my year-off, if I have the energy. I dont know if i would find them "enjoyable", but thats the point to find out. ( @Cuddlebear @Chasingsunsets @Till23 may be interested in knowing these ideas)

- plan to do a Diploma in Auslan (which will include the theory subjects from the Cert 2-4, and have RPL for the language skill)

- walk dogs at peast once a week. Maybe more?

- recommence pool-based exercise. Unless i do dog walks instead. Water is better due to non-weight-bearing and impact.

- maybe train one of my dogs to do volunteer Therapy visits (whether accredited or unaccredited; i know some places that want suitable dogs even without formal accreditation)

- start up a local social craft group (because there isnt one other than for knitting)

- maybe study MH Peer Work self-paced (but concerns about the Prac Hours portion due to needing recovery time-out. But i could possibly volunteer in an online group a few hours per week and do it slowly in the second half of the year).

- my mum is setting up monthly boardgames again with some family friends (we did it pre-covid, then shutdown and never got bavk to it and people tired)

I see my counsellor weekly on Fridays.

Support group is online, and thus open to Aus-wide and NZ. It is as anonymous or not as people wish. I know there is 1 person who is in my area, but I think they are quite busy, but might see about a coffee early next year. We were going to meet month or so ago but they had to cancel.

It is a small group (usually 6 people on average i think?) and often from the same pool of about 8-10 people, including people who pop by adhoc. Occasionally a new person. Its good to not have to commit ahead - login or don't as suits.

I think that's about it?

Xmas plans are xmas lunch with extended family here :face_with_rolling_eyes:. Then after boxing day plan to go visit my father in Syd for a week, and hope to see a specific friend (and her 1yo i havent met yet) whilst there too.

I bought a few 3d plaster figures whilst in melbourne to paint in my time off.

I am also interested to experiment with making my own moulds to make 3d plaster figures that i can paint -- more cost effective in the long run? And if i do the same mould i could paint them for pleasure and sell them possibly to cover the cost of the plaster mixture?? Or even just to recoup some of the cost 😅. E.g. Etsy. But weight for postage and fragile psckaging would be an issue. So maybe local markets or something that costs less 😅.
