Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you @Ru-bee and @rav3n both for your response & time, but also for allowing me to give that background context of how I feel/think. Without that underlying preference, the idea of choosing to taking extended time off work sounds a little drastic and a 'big risk' to future employment. In my mind, I have nothing to lose by giving up work to try to see if I can find a way for life to be liveable. I don't think my mother realises the other half of this time-off experiment and is more concerned about my ability to regain employment or being discriminated against by managers if I have taken extended sick leave. But she did accept when I said that it would be a good way to screen out employers that would not be a good match for my values -- if they discriminate because someone once took extended time off to recover from mental illness (after a history of very stable employment), then I definitely don't want to work for them anyway. 😅

Knowing that SANE is recovery-oriented is why I haven't voiced these thoughts about next year before, and instead why I have only mentioned previously what I am going to try to do in order to try to recover (time off work, maybe change to a more meaningful/satisfying work, clinical trial). I don't expect you to be able to talk about the other side of the coin; it is just for context and my own need to be heard sometimes.

@rav3n in answer to your question about joy/energy whilst I was away, no I did not unfortunately. Not like I did in 2020 and prior. Hence I am not sure if it is a change in me (due to burnout?) or due to the difference of company on the travel. But it also made me reflect that I don't think I would feel joy/energy (a sense of being "alive" perhaps) if I were travelling by myself. I think I like to share it with a friend, to share jokes, point out interesting things, and laugh along the way. I guess that aligns with my other hobbies like craft -- I don't feel anything when doing them by myself, but prefer to do them socially with a friend. By myself they are just a time-passer activity to keep me occupied.

I try to not be negative on the forum in general - e.g. not saying that i felt very little on my time away - and try to present/focus on the positive that I can share with others to also brighten their day. Of course if asking for specific support (eg needing a distraction chat, or advice) that is different and I will share both the positive and negative sides of the situation.

During the trip I reflected a number of time about what I was feeling, and asked myself "is this worth living to be able to do/experience/see?" But unfortunately the answer was unenthusiastic and not finding it worth the stress/fatigue of working and its affects on my MH and inability to do other activities due to the fatigue from work. What the photos don't reveal is that after and between them I was noticing that I felt nothing more than "interesting" at watching how the animals move/behave/look. 😢 This truth is quite heartbreaking to admit and brings me tears.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

it definitely does help to have that context!! @AlwaysMyself yeah if an employer discriminates based on that time off, it really reflects more on the company/management, than you - so you'd defs be dogging a bullet there!

it's okay to admit that it wasn't enjoyable as you'd hoped - and what you mentioned about the company making a difference - i do think that would make a big impact! i definitely have noticed a huge shift in my mood and motivation when i'm with good company too (key word: good haha).

it must've been hard to admit that, but it's your truth and that's absolutely okay! you gave it a go, got some amazing pics out of it, and made new memories - not feeling 'joy' doesn't erase the experience 😊

@Cuddlebear @Till23 @AuntGlow

Work options update: I have been offered a 3mth extension, but it would have to be at 3 days a week (not 1 or 2 days only).

Laptop is about to run out of battery so can't go into it more right now. But will have to do a lot of thinking this week and make a decision over the weekend to let them know on Monday.

@AlwaysMyself Hello my beautiful friend. How are you? Gee that’s not what I hoped you’d hear once meeting with the manager. How do you feel about it?

I’ve been really unwell struggling to keep up with forums. I’ll be looking out for your posts.

ps support button not working 😞

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear my support button isnt working currently either.

I'm not sure how I feel re: work. I guess "mixed".

It probably makes the decision easier, knowing that 1 or 2 days is not an option - given that I am not prepared to stay as things are (and I've already been holding out to finish this current contract length and not take extended leave yet).

I had better go back to work now!

Chat more later, I hope I am available to be online tonight.

I might offer that I could work until the end of Jan (1 month extra) if they don't manage to get a replacement for the new contract before then. I could push through for 1 month I think. Or maybe I could offer to do 1 day a week until they get someone in (however long that takes).

The good news was that they do want to find a place for me, and in March/April next year they will likely be in a position to recruit for another position that they would like my skills for (and prob only a 2 day role). So they said even if i dont take the extension they would still keep me in mind and reach out.

My bigger mixed thoughts are around "what if my GP doesnt think I need extended leave to recover?" I have an appt tomorrow so i will talk to him about it, or that is my plan.

Time time off the forums if you need @Cuddlebear *hugs*. Whatever is best for you.

I've searched for some images to post in the hope that the specially curated post for you may show I care in a way that gets a half-smile for a millisecond. Who knows, you may even even find some a bit cute or funny. 🥰 but its OK if it doesnt either! Just know its a sign of care since i cant do anything to physically help.

well, its not Friday yet. But Wednesday is the end of my work week so it feels like it!

And last but not least, i think some days it feels like being the baby bear in this pic:

not sure if its more a snuggly cuddle or a smothering keeping them contained 🤣😅.

If you would like motivation help to go for a short walk with Wilbur, you could always take a photo for me on your walk of a plant or Wilbur or the sky or whatever! 😊

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Good evening @AlwaysMyself,

How are you feeling today? 💛

It sounds like not needing to show up for anyone or anything but you right now would be really regulating! (I can relate to this.)

I wonder if some of these heavier feelings are also burnout-related?

What did you notice about your mood/energy throughout your time in Melbourne?

I just read over your best/worst outcome answers and also the reply you have received from work. How is the idea of 3 days sitting with you right now?

I also read your longer post where you shared some of your inner workings - I always appreciate the insights you provide, which help me to understand you even further. It must be so incredibly confusing for you to feel this way... and I want to validate that it makes sense. I think these conversations should be had more openly and more often. Existence is hard, complex, nuanced... and I think creating conversation around these feelings could help you to process/understand the anhedonia you have been experiencing?

Actually, something about what you just shared made me think that stepping into a role where advoacy is the focus could be really empowering and aligned for you? I am curious to know how you could use this internal fire to ignite a sense of passion?

For example, peer work might be a really wonderful next step for you - because you can fight for not only yourself, but for others to be heard and supported?

I am curious to know your thoughts. 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hi @AuntGlow , thank you for checking in & following up - it is greatly appreciated.

I don't feel worried with regard to the "worst case" scenario. When I mentioned that I was considering if I need to reduce days for a short time next year for health reasons, she explained well that due to other staff reducing hours also that she does need someone to do (at least) 3 days per week. But I feel OK about the possibility of still being able to get a role with them later next year (after time off) because she mentioned she would still be interested to find me a role in the unit (which is in addition to a number of other senior managers in the unit who recommended me to her for this role and would also like to retain me in the unit) next year when they have reviewed & settled the strategic needs & role gaps which they expect to be known around March next year, and that not accepting the extension doesn't mean they won't reach out to me about those roles. This is very good! Because if I were to return to my current employer, their team is MUCH preferable to the one I have been in until this temporary transfer (which was because of MH escalations due to workplace behaviours in the other team). It's not a guarantee, but it is not a closed door. It also means that they won't be permanently recruiting (if it becomes available) for that role until the 3 month contract has been done, which would mean I could apply for it in Feb or early March probably if I wanted to.

If I consider that taking the role is not an option because of the 3 day requirement, then that leaves me with returning to my former team (my permanent role). I don't feel bad to take extended sick leave from that role because 1) the MH deterioration & burnout was predominantly caused by preventable workplace issues, and 2) it's the role I accrued the sick leave during, and 3) they already have someone in my role who could then be offered an extension (not disruptive with recruiting). And I would feel no pressure to return if I did not think returning to that role was healthy for me; but still being employed in that role formerly at the time of the other unit possibly recruiting would make a direct transfer (rather than full application) possible if they wished to recruit me for one of their new roles (there is one that needs the industry-specific software experience I have).

So overall I think I will decline the extension, but I might offer that I could do some extra work until they hire someone else for the 3 months (either up to 1 month at 3 days, or 1 day a week until the find a person) -- not sure they would be interested, but I can put out the option to the manager in case they want some 'bridging' time.

If my GP agrees with taking 3 months of paid sick leave, then my permanent-role manager cannot disagree, and they have to let me take my sick leave. No financial worry for 3 months until it runs out. Then I guess I have to re-assess whether I need more time or if going back to work is healthy for me, or if that workplace still won't be healthy for me and I need to resign/transfer and find another job/industry.

If at that time I need more time off work, then I have to grapple with the finance. I very much dislike using my longterm savings because that is my "emergency money", but at the same time that money will prevent me from being eligible for government payments until it is all used up. Even then, I won't be eligible I think because I own an apartment which I currently rent out because I cannot live independently at the moment (the irony, right? If I was well enough to live independently in it, it would not count for an Asset Test. But if I am not well enough to live in it then it will count and exclude me from support payments!).

But I just have to trust that I will face the finance issue when I get there. Who knows, maybe I can make ends meet from odd-jobs or hobby-craft 😅. (This is why peer/support client work is sounding a good option - both meaningful & can be done just 1 day a week to cover basic expenses.)

Not having to show up for anything or anyone or look after myself, my dogs or my housework sounds very restful. It doesn't mean I wouldn't still choose to show up for people - just that it is when I am able and want to (like on the forum; if I'm too tired or grumpy or busy I just don't come online). I have been able to reduce the effort on healthy-eating by using some VLCD products for 1-2 meals a day -- balances the need for nutrition and weight-loss with the need for no-effort food. And by no-effort I mean not even having to wait 5 minutes for the microwave, because that is off-putting when I am exhausted. I can just unwrap a bar and voila! And I have a few frozen meals that are more filling also for when I feel hungrier than just a bar/shaker. I like that nutritionally this is sustainable too. And the VCLD costs less than a premade supermarket meal anyway.

However there is not much else in my routine I can get rid of to reduce burnout (other than work). I guess I could ask my partner (former partner? who knows) to take the dogs fulltime, but I don't think that is good for the dogs during the day when he is at work. Just means I have to feed them, medications, organise the dog walker, play with them, let them out to toilet, and make sure the house is tidy when I leave so they can't destroy things (younger dog has been on a particularly naughty stealing streak lately).

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you? I can understand having mixed feelings. This is a tough decision for you given how you are feeling at the moment.

Yes you could offer to do January at 3 days or 1 day a week. I presume January is a little quieter being during holiday period.

They obviously value you which doesn’t surprise me at all. Having told you they are willing to consider you for a new role in 2026.

Perhaps making a list of pro and cons to help you decide? Would that be helpful?

@AlwaysMyself Wow. I can’t thank you enough for sending all those through specially for me. The fact you thought about me really bought tears to my eyes and I loved every single picture.

You are such a rare jewel in this world you truly are. It really made me feel that someone likes me and cares. I realise you are going through tough times too and you still took that time to help cheer me up.

I did take Wilbur for a walk. I took him again today. They are not very long but I’m proud of doing it even though I feel so rubbish.

How has your day gone today?
