Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Wow @Cuddlebear that is a BIG rose! Very pretty, thank you. 🙂 Was it from your garden?

Got back into Aus this morning, and finally to home just before midday. Been a bit tired & brain-mush today understandably from the no-sleep overnight flight. I think I am starting the "overtired" phase now as my brain seems to be focusing a little better lol.

I will at some stage go through some photos to post online. 🙂 Although of course I will have to reduce them all to lower-quality for the forum size limit lol, so that might take a bit - also to see what the best photos to share are, so that I don't totally swamp people haha. Might hijack the Dream Trip thread for it 😛

It was a good trip. Glad I had some rest days in amongst there, and 3 rest days at the end of the trip too. No flights were cancelled or much delayed; all hotel bookings were smooth (I have once in the past had a hotel that had no record of a booking and had no rooms).

Glad I will also have the next 2 days of weekend before back to work on Monday. But I was good and already done my washing and hanging up to dry. Really didn't have much washing to do, since it was limited luggage weight - 10kg checked luggage on my regional flights (and that includes the bag which itself weighs a few!).

I was of course greeted very happily by the dogs on arrival back home (and my mother). My male dog appears to have adapted to laying downstairs in my mother's rooms, and is still doing so today haha. Where as my female dog has been hanging around with me wherever I go - but sleeping on floor/couch when I'm sitting down.

It is going to take me a lot to catch up on things, so I will "start fresh" and people can just tell me anything I have missed they want me to know 🙂 .

I did read that you are still tapering off and it's still really difficult. 😞 and will be tapering off until the new year?! I am glad its slow tapering (due to the side affect issue) but also feel for you knowing that the decrease in medication can in itself also cause mood difficulties.

What have I missed news from you?

Hi @AuntGlow , I am back from my travels.

@AuntGlow wrote:

@AuntGlow None of my psychologists, psychiatrists or counsellors have given a theory on the underlying cause or what might help (given the things that I already try/do). I'm very open to research/theories/ideas.

Gah, that must feel so frustrating... are you most wanting to understand this sense of anhedonia? 💖

PS: How are you today?

Sometimes yes I wish I had an answer/knowledge for my atypical depression/anhedonia. But other times I just shrug and think 'it is what it is'. The motive for understanding it is to better be able to address/treat it, if possible - or to know it has a non-treatable cause and not have to wonder about "might it improve substantially in the future?"

Now that I am back from my holiday I will have to start thinking more decisively about my plans for early next year (work or no-work to focus on MH) (study for career change?), and get the ball rolling again with the referral for the clinical trial (not yet seen how many steps back in my reaching-BMI-goal my holidays has done lol, will try to remember to do that tomorrow morning so I can reset my goal timeline accordingly). All options have pros & cons of course, and some partial options (e.g. only work 1 day a week) may not be a supported option by my employer (although if it was on a restricted duty sick leave they wouldn't have a choice) - but also don't know if this could end up being more stressful than my normal 3 days work (the motive of the idea being financial).

Was thinking about it occasionally on the holiday during downtime, and still feeling conflicted about all my options.

@AlwaysMyself Welcome back my beautiful friend. You’ve been missed here. I’m so glad you are back and have been able to get your washing done and start to get ready for going back to work tomorrow. Very impressive considering you’ve been on flights back home! How are you today? Did you get some sleep? I’m glad you liked the pretty rose. It was from the rose gardens I visited.

It sounds like flights and accomodation were all smooth and glad you were not stuck with issues with those things. I am looking forward to seeing any photos you wish to share and to tell us about what the places you visited were like.

Your mum and the dogs would have been very happy to see you home. I can the dogs doing some zoomies and wanting pats and cuddles once you walked in the door!

Yes you’d have a billion tags so starting fresh is probably a good way to go.

You have not missed much from me. I’ve been really struggling with this taper and feeling awful. Every drop in medicine compounds all the withdrawal symptoms. I’m not coping very well. I’ve been home as I’m genuinely just sick and even the small things are impossible. There’s times I really feel I just can’t get through this and I try to tell myself I can. It is truly unbearable living like this each day. I wish I had better news.

Quick hugs before i go to sleep @Cuddlebear . Sorry i havent had proper time on the forums today. Busy with grocery shopping and some life admin, and coming down with a cold (sore throat since waking up). Work from home tomorrow for me i think - dont want to spread the germs, plus can take a break to nap if i need to with this cold.

Meant to be travelling down to Melb on Thurs for the weekend, so need to let my body fight as good as it can to not get fully sick.

You are not forgotten. Just been soo busy. But made some progress with photos yesterday. Oohh that would be a great offline activity for me on the bus/train to Melb - sorting them and cropping/etc as needed to then post.

@AlwaysMyself Hello beautiful friend. How are you feeling today with the cold? I hope you did take the day off to let your body rest. Get as much as you can before having to fly to Melbourne on Thursday. I hope it’s just a small cold that will go away very quickly.

Yes a very good activity on bus/train to crop photos. How long does the trip take via bus and train?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Good evening @AlwaysMyself,

I completely hear you on the understanding your anhedonia front... it's so complex and nuanced, isn't it? What happens when you shrug and think 'it is what it is'? And conversely, what happens when you explore understanding and answers?

I would love to hear more about your holiday, if you feel like sharing!

And yes, it certainly sounds like there a few things to consider here, which really would be conflicting - why does being an adult have to be so hard!?

I am curious, what option brings about a sense of peace or lightness when you consider it? 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear I have a 4.5 hour bus to Wadonga, then a 4 hour train into Melbourne.

Bus is fully full so i dont have space to even sit bsck in my chair properly cos i have someone next to me (i'm at least on a window, so i am trying to leave into it as much as possible to keep to my side! But right arm doesnt like reaching across the whole time lol.).

No seat-table on the bus coach though, so can't do laptop. My external hardrive (as my laptop one isnt big enough to store photos on) is also very sensitive to being bumped and will disconnect even if my dog noses the cable! So i think it would probably complain too if i tried to do it on the bus lol. I once lost a all the sorting/tagging of my photos (but not the master copy of the photos themselves) because my harddrive disconnected whilst working on it. 😭 I've never redone a whole single computer photo library again since then, nearly 10 years ago. But I would like to get it back to being sorted into my different trips and also "highlights" albums.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AuntGlow the idea that feels light and peace I also feel is not "responsible" or a longterm sustainable reality. 😥

@Cuddlebear (and if anyone else is interested) - dont feel you have to comment, but if you are interesteed, and of course always open to hearing others thoughts perspectives and experiences or situations.

Options include...

1. Stay as it is (not really an option I am open to, other than to just delay things for a month or two if need). (Working 3days/wk in IT)

2. Ask (or get Dr certificate if they agree) to decrease to 1 day/week work. (Benefit? Still have some income after sick leave expended. But may cause more workplace stress proportionally)

3. No work at all (if dr agrees, can use 3mth worth of sick leave accred). Spend time to recover physical health and burnout and try to find something that i can have a positive experience (enjoyment) doing that makes life more balanced. Or at the very least, remove the physical and mental pain from working.

4. No work (or 1 day/wk) plus self-paced study. If i retrained i would prob do thr MH Peer Work certificate. Study is not hard for me and i can often complete self-paced at 1/4 time that is usually recommended (part of the reason i struggled mentally at school was it was too slow haha). Then when I finished study and alsp recovered from physical and mental burnout could look at doing peer work maybe 5-10hr a week to keep a small income to pay for my board & medical costs.

Option 3 would have the best outcome for my health, but once my sick leave is used up I would either have to return to work (and it is not a healthy environment unless I transfer teams perminantly), or quit the job (unless they allow a futher 6-12mth leave without pay). I'm not sure what it would take to change for me to feel that I could go back to work there 3 days/week longterm. But maybe if i felt really well and engaged outside of work then maybe i could cope with it.

If i quit my job, i have no garuntee of being able to get another job in the IT industry as i have been very specialised in my work role the past 4 years whilst also being a generalist in skillsets. I would be unlikely to get another job at the same pay rate. Maybe only 2/3 the pay rate.

Another compounding factor currently is I do not yet know what the options are with my current temporary role. The team I work with are a healthy-enough environment (I can stay out of the politics and dramas, and they proactively try to improve their own practices which is good). However my role ends at the end of December, and we don't know yet if it will become permanently available or not. We won't know for another 4 weeks I think.

I should find out next week what my manager is going to offer in terms of a temporary extension (to bridge the gap until they know if they need to advertise the position I am in, or whether the former person is returning). But I am not sure what length of extension I would be happy to accept.

In theory a 1 month extension would be fine - i can cope for 1 month more before taking time off. But that would cover January -- and I am not sure what work I would be able to productively progress during Jan because most people are on leave and the nature of the work I am doing is collaborative working groups!

So, if it was 2 months extension, until the end of Feb? Maybe... i could do some productive work still.. but do I want to wait 2 more months with how things have been for me??

3 months I dont think i want to delay for. It sounds too long currently. Its been hard enough waiting for the clinical trial which would prob be March next year also. If they would do 1 day a week for 3 months i think i would do that.

And then if the position does become permanently vacant, do I want to apply for it? Or not, because I feel i need time off work to recover and not sure about returning. But it is a healthier environment than my permanent role, so if I did return it would be more likely if it was to that team.

And I dont know if I can speak to that manager about these options - i.e. to tell her that I would like the permanent job but need time off to recover and may not even come back after if things dont improve enough.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely it’s good to hear from you. I hope the bus trip isnt too uncomfortable and I am glad that you have a seat with window thwt at least helps having something to look at.

I can tell that the decisions you have to make are hard ones. I am sorry that you are in this position.

The first option soubds like it’s not an option for you. You could delay for a month or two but from what you describe that's not ideal.

Option 2 to decrease to 1 day a week does give you some income but as you said might also cause some work stress. It’s better than option 1 but may not be ideal.

Option 3 sounds like your preferred option at the moment because you need the time to improve your mental health and burnout. Having accrued leave is also good as you’ll get paid. It will also give you the time to explore what brings you enjoyment.

Option 4 With study and 1 day work could work. The study could give you a different work option if where you are at now is too stressful especially going back to your old role. However, you could take your leave and do the course later in the year too.

If you can wait till you see what the manager says about your current role and if they want to offer an extension and for how long that could help with making a decision on when to take your leave. Your previous team doesn’t sound like a healthy environment so if you have a little more time where you are that could give you the space to decide when to take the leave. It sounds to me like you do need the leave of at least 3 months. If you need to extend that you can ask for that leave without pay. For now you could concentrate on just the 3 months leave and make a decision once when once you speak to your manager about the current role.

If your current role does become vacant and advertised you can at that time decide whether you want to apply. You also have the option of doing the course so you have a back up plan work wise. I think you’d make an awesome peer support worker.

You don’t have to go over all of this with your manager. If they are able to let you know what’s happening in the next week or so you’ll have a much better idea of the option that would best suit you. If they extend current role for a month before possibly advertising and you can do that then that’s an option before you take the sick leave.

It’s ok to use your leave even if you stay permanently in your current role. You don’t have to feel guilty at all about that. I think your GP will give you the leave certificate you require too.

I know these are hard decisions. Your health and wellbeing are really important. You don’t have to rush into anything.
