Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@Cuddlebear if the taper makes you feel a lot worse, is it possible to then dial back to what you're taking currently? (Of course with letting your GP know too!)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Fatigue is a common side effect of the new med. flFor some people it goes away as the body adjusts. Hopefully it go after my body adjusts.

Fatigue is one of the side effects from tapering. But also very emotional feelings none of them positive, panic, nightmares, restlessness, feeling edgy, deep sadness, heart racing and SI. A feeling of wanting to get away from my body and mind because it’s so overwhelming having these symptoms at such intense levels. Obviously I can get away from myself but it’s how I feel when it’s so overwhelming. These are all classic symptoms of antidepressant withdrawals. Unfortunately I’m on the severe end as everyone’s bodies are different.

I have Thallasemia which I sometimes have required blood transfusions and iron infusions so I have regular blood tests. My vitamin D should be fine as I do make sure to sit in sun earlier in the day.

Yes I know you have chronic fatigue 😞 it’s such a misunderstood thing. People just think you are tired but it’s beyond tired. Even if you sleep adequately you wake up with chronic fatigue and doing small tasks is exhausting. I really like the idea of slowly having an energy drink throughout the day. It doesn’t spike sugar levels but gives energy slower.

I know you’ve tried a lot of things. You are so well educated and seek ways that might help. There are still many options as science develops and I’m hoping that the trial you’ll be on will bring some relief for you too. I can understand why you feel it “might” work without having high hopes. However, even after 20 years things can change. I really want that for you.

I can totally understand the situation you are describing about working and living costs coupled with disabilities. Working up-to 2 days a week and having some support from your mum might be something that can work. Being in a Government job they have to be flexible based on disability. Would going from 3 days to 2 days be too big a financial drop? Or would it be ok with the rental income and some support from your mum? This would mean less financial support from your mum as you will still have some work helping to live within a budget that meets both your needs? You can also get DSP even if you get rent for a property. They just consider it income so you’ll get a lower rate but will also have access to a pensioner concession card.

For now focusing on your holiday and getting a much needed rest is also important. Once you get back to your old job it will almost be time of end of year break and giving you some extra time to think and work out a plan for the new year.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

*hugs you close as a friend who wishes they could take away your panic attacks and wanting to escape your body*. Until a year ago I would have had to say I intellectually understand but not physically. Last Dec-Feb I had severe panic attacks, and I can still remember during that time feeling like I was on the edge of mentally escaping my body (almost dissociation perhaps) because of the unprompted panic I felt without any "threat" (it was a side effect, and hence wore off after a few months). I remember having so many suicidal thoughts just because of wanting the feeling to end -- where as (as you know) usually my SI is not from distressing emotional feelings. I think those panic attacks were the worst thing I have ever experienced to my memory. It gave me a lot more understanding into how it feels for people with anxiety and how absolutely debilitating it is even if you rationally know and tell yourself that ypu are safe and there is no threat --- telling myself that did not take away the panic response!

Living in that feeling physically alone, just imagining that again in my mind brings tears to my eyes for you and others. *big hug*

I'd be there with you on a couch watching a comedy, or telling you funny stories to make you laugh if I could.

Did you know that you cant simultaneously feel panic and genuinely laugh at the same time? (The benefit of my mum being a psychologist - i got all the tips for free when I was having panic attacks!)

I would find a funny show, or watch funny animals or stupid-human-doing-shit-that-hurts-themselves on youtube to stimulate the laughter response. And it worked! ...until I stopped watching it 🤣. But it bought me relief some time at least!!

I just got the "flight available for check in" email for the first flight. That means less than 48hr until check-in at the airport. (I have a 3-4hr bus to the airport first though lol). Its getting real.

I wish I felt excited, but its ok that I dont. I can outwardly pretend to when I need to. And I am glad to be going, because I have been interested to see these places and wildlife for so long. I plan to take my full camera, so it might take a while after I arrive home to upload photos to the forums (export off SD card to laptop. Then edit to small size, then upload). And since i dont like *being in* photos there is no privacy issue 😊 as i try not to have ppl in frame.

I'm glad to see you've been able to post more into the forums again in the general chat areas and that people are really supportive of you with your tapering process. I'm going to miss chatting to you while I'm away, and I hope that others on the forum can fill my place with checking in on how you are too to make sure you get the support you need, want and absolutely are a value human and deserve. 🥰

Ill still be online tomorrow, and possibly Tuesday morning when in-transit to airport or waiting at airport.

I have friends coming over in 15min so I best skedaddle!

I am thinking of you and care. I hope so much that your symptoms decrease and the new meds help in both physical and mental health.

@AlwaysMyself

Gosh those panic attacks are awful. They are exactly as you describe them. For me they come in waves at the moment and nothing stops them like grounding, breathing etc etc. What I didn’t know though that while having a real laugh you can’t also have a panic attack. I should try watching funny YouTube videos of goats and cats etc doing funny stuff. I’m really glad yours have gone and I’m praying mine will go away too. They are so debilitating and exhausting. Poor Wilbur comes and lets me stroke him and cuddle him when he sees them coming in. I feel for him he looks worried for me. I try to reassure him though.

It feels so surreal when the flight check in emails arrive. It’s like well this is really going to happen very soon! How long is the flight? I’m presuming time zones are quite different too. Does jet lag give you a hard time? Have you got some activities booked yet? Knowing you I’m sure you’ve been looking online for what’s available.

The photography soubds like it’s going to look awesome as you have a full camera. Phone photos are ok but a decent camera is a whole other level!!! I’m excited to see the photos and hear about your experiences with the animals too plus the food and culture!!!!

You are honestly one of the most awesome people I’ve met in a very long time. I think we’d hit it off so we’ll F2F too. I love reading your posts and learning from your insights, knowledge and education!

I hope you are enjoying some time with your friends this afternoon/evening. I’ve been indoors Melbourne weather has been shocking today with all day rain and some thunderstorms.

Im going to miss you too. But I’m also just really happy that you are going to see a part of the world you’ve wanted to see and experience. You deserve it and I am hoping your partner does engage and really value you and that they have you to enjoy this really exciting journey.

@Cuddlebear

I'm glad Wilbur is a good comfort and comes to you when he senses you are stressed and/or in a panic. 😍 Dogs are pretty good like that sometimes. Mine are not very sensing of it 🤣.

I'm sure Wilbur is just concerned for you, as his pack-master he wants to make sure his pack is OK and healthy. Dogs are so resilient, that I doubt it will be causing him problems -- but if it does then could chat to the vet at his next check up to see what they recommend? e.g. some dogs respond well to treats with some ingredient to help sooth/calm anxiety (never helped my girl dog when she was young and cried overnight in her crate... gosh she was sooo bad with crying non-stop for over 4 hours before I realised it was not going to stop and had to work out how to help her cope... she got so distressed once she even had diarrhoea in the crate!)

I will be in GMT+8 timezone whilst away, rather than being in GMT+11 here - so I will be 3 hours behind you (as I recall you are Melbourne/VIC timezone, which is same as NSW/ACT timezone where I am).

I have 2 different tours - one per location/country, but both wildlife focus. One to see the Deramakot/Kinabatangan River area (Borneo, Malaysia) and one in Komodo National Park region (Indonesia) - hopefully see Komodo Dragons on one day. I have 1 free day in the tour start town for each of those tours. Plus before flying home I have 3 nights in a hopefully-quiet area of Bali, with no plans yet (relax? but if I am bored I can book activities there too).

I do wish I could meet you in person; I reckon we would get on well as F2F friends too. Who knows, maybe one day SANE will change their policy and organise a safe meetup for those who want to meet each other in a controlled/safe environment. Sadly I doubt they will, but less expected things have happened in the world. 😂
Maybe I'll have to just explore around VIC asking every vision-imparied-with-dog person I meet if they like "cuddling bears" 🤣🤣. (No, I would not invade your privacy like that! But I find it a funny mental image of walking around asking strangers. Mods please know this is a friendly joke and not intending to encourage people to break the community guidelines of anonymity. 🙂)

We had a little rain where I am, but apparently not nearly enough for any impact for the gardens. I expect rain many days whilst in Borneo.

Do you like or dislike the rain & thunderstorms?

How does Wilbur find thunderstorms?

I am lucky my dogs are fine with rain & thunder & lightening. But I know many dogs aren't. When I raised a guide dog pup, she was scared of going out in the rain (wouldn't toilet, would do it inside!) so I deliberately started talking her for walks (because she LOVED walks) every time it rained, and it did the trick - she got used to the rain and then would happily go out in it to toilet. 😊 I also find it is quieter and less busy when walking in the rain, and I like the feel of natural rain on my skin too.

I dislike when I get home wet though, and then need to dry off. Egh, the drying off. Same with showers lol.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello my beautiful friend. How are you? One more sleep to go and you’ll be off on an exciting adventure.

That’s not too bad being 3 hours behind. Jet lag happens even in trips within Australia but 3 hours behind gives your body a quicker and less yuck time to adjust.

Loving the sounds of your booked tours. So much awesome wildlife in that part of the world. You’ll get some awesome snaps too with your camera. Komodo Dragons are amazing animals and they are huge! I really hope you do get to see them! There’s heaps of colourful markets too in Bali you can check out if you can’t be bothered with another tour. My daughter also did a cooking class in Bali. You can book them there. She enjoyed it!

Wilbur doesn’t get anxious thank goodness. He just comes over and snuggles and lets me know he’s there and everything’s ok. He’s currently resting in the bed in my lap after having a bit of a busy afternoon as I had medical appointments and he got a big play afterwards in the park nearby.

What time do you need to be at airport tomorrow?

I do wish we could meet too (moderators don’t panic just a wish nothing more). I laughed lol reading how you could spot me with Wilbur by my side and me being deaf too plus a how much do you like cuddle bears lol! I saw a lady online yesterday feeding a wild bear meat as the bear comes to her house for snacks! She was in the US! I would respond are you always yourself lol! 😂

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

OMG yes that would be the perfect reply @Cuddlebear 😂. And no one would look at your too weirdly either - they would just think, "yes, I am myself... who else could I be??" 🤣

It is amazing how wild animals can learn to trust humans over time (esp if from a baby) - even though it may go against their natural instincts. I recall seeing a similar type of story/video with a hippo in Africa that visited someone's house since it was a baby (lost mum I think? they may have cared for it until it could survive alone and then released it? I don't fully recall, but I remember it returned to their home still to visit!).

I currently have my girl dog on the bed next to me, but at my feet. She's only taking up 1/4 of the bed tonight lol. Only half stretched out haha.

I have to get up in abit over 6 hours, so I had best go! I have an early start due to a morning bus and then a midday flight. I really hope the bus doesn't run late! I have 2 hours between the arrive time and the flight departure time, so it should be OK as long as the bus isn't 1 hour late. But I will be stressing if it is more than 30min late arriving to the airport. I soo hate being late. 😅 I've caught it once or twice before and it's been ontime I think.

@AlwaysMyself Good morning lovely. It’s the big day! I hope the bus was on time and thwt everything is going smoothly for you.

You will have such a good time. I can’t wait to hear all about your travels once you get back home. You’ll be missed on forums but I’ll be here when you get back to hear all your news.

Animals are amazing I too have heard stories of wild animals making friendships with humans.

Im up and have GP today. I’ll be working on this taper and hopefully will do well. Trying my very best.

If I don’t hear from you today have a safe trip. Keep well and enjoy all the wonderful things you’ll see. Lots of love from me.

@AuntGlow None of my psychologists, psychiatrists or counsellors have given a theory on the underlying cause or what might help (given the things that I already try/do). I'm very open to research/theories/ideas.

Gah, that must feel so frustrating... are you most wanting to understand this sense of anhedonia? 💖

PS: How are you today?
