Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Sorry to hear you've been through similar with your partner @AuntGlow. for me its bitter-sweet because I was at the point already where part of me wanted him out because I felt he was not addressing the issues because we made temporary accommodations to reduce his stress load. But I also didnt want the responsibility to have to look after the dogs by myself (I deliberately did not have pets because I struggle to have the physical and emotional energy to do so, as well as the finances). So his decision to do so is mixed relief and pet-burden.

The good thing is that I grieved for the loss of our relationship over the past 12 months already 😅 so that pain isn't a problem anymore.

Today has been a better day; the thoughts have not been as intrusive or strong. I have been able to just let them flow in the background while I focused on other things (work, dogs, etc). This is i suppose the "normal" level for me - SI is there, but I can let it flow through and out again without it consuming all my thoughts.

I dont have any formal 'safety plan', but over the past 20 years my strategies for keeping myself safe and alive have evolved. Because I am not usually "in distress" emotionally when I have these thoughts, grounding or emotional-processing techniques dont help. I'm way too logical and rational about it already. What does help me during those times is connection to people who want me to stay alive, since that has been the only reason for staying alive. So I have a few friends I can contact if the thoughts/feelings get too strong. My other technique is to delay any actions - which then gives me time to change my mind or for the thoughts to receed a little. This is why I plan holidays 😊 - they become new goalposts to reach. Psychiatrist-approved method 😅.

Moving back in with my mother was also to provide additional support when i need it, as she would be living in the other half of the house and just a door knock away.

And if I dont want to bother a friend, then a help line.

The biggest problem i have with my mental health is that I don't experience joy/happiness/pleasure. And I have no memory of those emotions/experience either.

I know that probably sounds very unlikely, but I have racked my brain earlier this year (when doing NLP anchoring) and even asked my mother if she knew of any times that might be stored away for me to recall. 😬 we couldn't find any.

I had an interesting conversation with my friend on Sunday night. She's pretty sure my way of thinking and perceiving the world (when I am honest about what I think/feel that I dont say/show externally) is most likely well masked autism. I'm aware I have a lot of autistic-like thinking traits, but have doubted that I would be diagnosable -- however it does sound like my reasoning for why it wouldn't be diagnosable may be due to masking (such that it did not cause significant "problems" in childhood other than depression). It does make me wonder how much my autistic-like traits may be contributing to my bland view of life.

It would be helpful to chat about whether to tell a few more friends about it, and if so to what degree. Im not worried about "being vulnerable" or myself in it, im more concerned about their own wellbeing, and not wanting to tell them something they wish they didn't know, or setting them up to a situation where they feel obligated to show care or listen when they arent naturally that way inclined to support.

Oh, and re: peer support person @AuntGlow , I looked at the Mable website you mentioned. I didnt want to create an account just to see approx pricing (not even sure if providers list their pricing or if its all on-request?), but did note their average from across all services/locations is about $66/hr. Not sure thats realistically affordable for me (or not enough within my financial priorities) as I already spend nearly half my pay on medical and housework supports. 😰. I dont have any funding assistance from ndis or such. Thank goodness I dont pay market rent 😊.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself How are you lovely? It sounds like so much is going on for you and I’m really proud of you for persevering and trying hard to improve things in your life and health. I do want to be supportive as I genuinely care about how you are. I’m trying my best to keep as up to date on forums.

The trial soubds really really promising. I think I might know which one as I read something in news recently. It sounds like at this stage it’s having good success and I am praying that the trial results show thwt it’s more effective specially for treatment resistant depression and anxiety. I’m hoping that you’ll be able to participate as the weight loss takes place and the tests like ECG all come back clear. I can understand feeling depressed thwt it might be a year before you can access it. I will be here for you and provide as much support as the forums allow.

I am sorry that there’s no clarity from them about what’s going on. I know you’ve felt alone for some time as he’s not been there for you and engaging in a loving and supporting way. Giving this some time will also let you discover how you feel and what you want. I realise it’s painful and scary. You’ve been so strong on living apart to see how things work out. That itself isnt an easy thing to do when you’ve been in a relationship. Is there anything I can do to help?

Yay on finding a solution to a problem at work! Love it when that happens and makes things so much easier for everyone!!!!!!

My afternoon ended up in a crisis. I was with my psychologist and told her how I was really feeling. Up until discharge I was on a medication that helps to relax the body and hole tapering. Just small dose 3 times a day. Then without telling me PARC doctor on discharge dropped it to 2 times a day so yesterday I didn’t have the benefit of the lunch time dose and couldn’t cope with the withdrawal effects from the taper. My psychologist contacted my GP so I could see them urgently yesterday to change the script back to 3 times a day for now. She also contacted CATT team and today when I see social worker they will assess whether I need to see the CATT team. My psychologist and social worker both work at same place and there’s good collaboration. I’m hoping today with the additional dose of the relaxant I’ll be more steady. It just helps a bit to take the edge off. I still have tapering to go so I really need all the support I can access.

It’s tough doing this at home alone. Wish I had people around.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I totally hear you on this. These decisions are never black and white or simple, are they? @AlwaysMyself

Yes, I understand the pre-grieving process very well!

I am glad yesterday was a better day, and I appreciate you sharing more about your feelings so I can understand your inner world a bit better. 🥰

Connection and delay are wonderful strategies. Psych approved holidays are a must. 💅

I think the notion of working towards something meaningful in general is really good for strenghtening our more hopeful neural pathways. What else are you working towards atm?

You know, I think your friend might be onto something here. And if this is the case, perhaps the process of unmasking would allow you to connect to your authenticity, and therefore your joy?

Honestly, what you just shared is perfect - letting them know you would like to share, but that there's no pressure to show up more than they can, is a very open approach. You can also add that the content might be triggering and ask if they are okay to hear it, and reassure that you will still be there if they say no. It's holding a safe container (and a very loving one with boundaries) that way. 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Yay for your psychologist contacting your GP and CATT team @Cuddlebear 🥰. I hope having the midday dose as well today has helped.

Hope the social worker tomorrow is beneficial too, and if needed the CATT team can also provide some help until you are coping a bit better again.

If you need a good smile/laugh, have a read of the The Monkey’s Paw: Make a Wish, I Dare You ~ thread. It came to mind when I thought about your question of how to support within bounds of the forum. I think the hard thing is there is limited ability for what would help me - similiar in a way to your situation - because what I'd wish for if I had a magic wand (and thus thought of the thread above lol) is someone to do all the house/pet care, teleporting to all my appointments (not the effort of driving to and fro), not having to cook for myself, being able to comfort-eat, and not feeling physical pain. Then I could just rest. (But I know in reality none of that will help with my lack of enjoyment/interest in life, and thus only helps me continue to exist at a neutral level).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I'm not sure masking and joy are related for me. I'm open to the idea that it might be, but i don't see the connection yet. I've always allowed myself to be who I am, and not pretend to be something else - but it means I keep most of my thoughts to myself unless with like-minded people. For example, when people talk about celebrities - my thoughts are it is pointless waste of time because they are not people I/you know or are affected by, and thus I don't care about it.

Or cosmetics; to me they're a waste of money and ethically I dont like them because they make money from people feeling insecure and feeling not good enough naturally. But unless I am stopped by a seller as I walk past a stall, I dont share this opinion with others because its not socially acceptable to say to someone who is talking about cosmetics. But if a salesman tries to accost me as I pass a stall? Oh, game on - I will absolutely look at them dead-pan and ask why i need their product? And what is wrong with the way that I am now? And if nothing is wrong with it, then I dont need the product. 🤷‍♀️ since of course they won't say "because you look terrible", but if they did i would totally ask what is wrong with looking unattractive. Because I have a firm philosophy that people who judge me for my looks are not the type of people I would want to know well or keep the counsel of.

Thing is, I dont see a point to life.

If people enjoy life - then that is great for them and I get why they would want to cling onto that.

But for me... it seems pointless. Its just a process of doing things to meet the needs of staying alive and aiming for a comfortable way of life.

But in the end, what it is all for?

(I'm *too* rational!)

I don't really enjoy doing things alone; i prefer a person for company. But I find people exhausting. I have 2 good friends that arent exhausting to be around; one lives 4hrs away and has 2 young children so I may only see her once a year or so. The other is local but is usually quite busy and doesn't have enough downtime for herself already.

(I do spend most of my non-work time alone, but I dont feel enjoyment from reading a book or watching tv or even the bits of painting. They are just there to pass time.)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you so much for sharing this with me @AlwaysMyself. 💛

What I am hearing is that connection with others brings you a sense of meaning, but that you're not experiencing the quantity of quality connection that you're needing to feel fulfilled? Is that right?

(You can always let me know if I am wrong!)

I will be heading off soon, but I hope you have a lovely weekend and we will talk more next week! 🫶

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AuntGlow you are correct that meaningful connection with others is important to me. I'm not sure if it provides "meaning" to life for me, but if I am living it is the most meaningful thing I have found. In the same way that I would persuade myself as a teen to get out of bed and go to school by telling myself that I could at least encourage my friends that day.

However its not a strong enough motivator for me anymore. I think I need something "for myself". Something that is worth the struggle and physical pains of living.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Wow @AlwaysMyself we have a lot of similar thinking. I also have never worn or been interested in cosmetics, am not concerned about celebrities, unless I respect them. For example - Dolly Parton - extraordinary song writer and musician and does lots of things for underprivileged people and came from difficult background.

I am not concerned with looks, but what's on the inside of people.

I do do a lot of masking though, which I wish I didn't but you know, the feeling of not good enough.

Do you get some meaning from your work?

I often think about the meaning of life and have difficulties with some things, such as toxic consumerism. I fortunately have a strong connection to nature. I derived a lot of meaning from work. Now I hope to get some from volunteering and the stuff I do is a bit to help people with connection in a way. Also being in a team for sport is helpful because we rely on each other
