Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Its no wonder i gravitated towards your posts at times also @Till23 😉. I like down to earth people.

My work does have to have some sense of meaningfulness -- for example when I had an interview at a "skin cancer clinic" and saw half their clinic was advertising botox for cosmetic reasons (not for pain) I knew that I would never accept a job there even if selected. It would be incompatible with me internally.

I have worked in I suppose 3 industries: health (mostly), education (for a few years), and a social club (for a few years). The latter is realised was important for social and mental wellbeing of the (predominantly retired elderly) members.

However I do not derive enough meaning from work as to motivate me to put up with negative things. But it helps me with motivation to go to work.

I also do volunteer work which aligns with my values. I volunteer half of the year to spend 1:1 time with a youth program to help support them in life skill development and resilience.

I am a christian, but not a "religious" person in the sense of dogma or "rules". However I find the over the years whilst I do choose to believe in god, I dont feel as much connection or identity in those beliefs.

I love animals, but not from a spiritual sense. Just because they are pretty, unique, interesting, etc... I used to watch ants in the grass to pass time. 😅

hiya @Till23

@AlwaysMyself i love what you shared about not caring about things like celebrities or makeup - if i'm honest i do love keeping up with celebrity goss here and there (i think i started enjoying it as an escape. i used to find my life very boring, disappointing and bland, so reading stories or dramas was what distracted me from my emptiness). hopefully i can work on getting a healthier outlook like you.

i'm really glad you both have found certain roles really fulfilling. it's such a good feeling when you're able to work in a space that aligns with your passion and values.

this might be a silly question on my behalf, but i'm curious to understand @AlwaysMyself what sort of meaning are you looking for? could you share a bit more about that?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Just been catching up on some of your thread @AlwaysMyself - the bit about noticing potential traits of autism caught my eye - because it then makes me think about the fact that in my own journey of late-diagnosed ND shenanigans a Very Big Theme has been realising a lot of the 'advice' and ways of living in the world that I'd been trying to adhere to simply weren't meant for me. Striving for it just left me exhausted and wondering how and when I was supposed to feel happiness from it....

Just some food for thought anyhow 🤔 Hope your Friday has unfolded okay 💜

@Jynx @rav3n

Friday went ok. Kept very busy between my appts and prep for people coming over. Did have some rest time in between though - which the dogs particularly enjoyed (lap/couch time). The dogs also liked me making the salad cos they got the ends of carrots.

It was good to chat a little with the counsellor about how my lack of positive/enjoyment experience and lack of meaning in/of life has been a big challenge for keeping on keeping on. It was nice to be able to be honest about the few options I see for the time between now and this time next year; as I cant really talk to others about it for their own wellbeing reasons.

What sort of meaning am I looking for?

If I can be very direct? (Please edit if need be; and im on a mobile so I don't have the option of inserting a content box)

Some reason to live that *I want* to live for, that makes putting up with the negatives of life worthwhile. As I say, "something to balance the scale" - although that is also in relation to feeling positive experiences to balance the scales.

People are born, they live, they die. What's the point of living? (If people enjoy the experience of living, then yeah sure they have a good reason to! ...but I don't.)

The only "purpose" to living i can see is to help others live less painfully. But I'm now at a stage where I need a reason for *myself*, not "for others". I'm worn out from existing for the sake of making life less painful for others, and becoming a little more callous about that as a reason - "put myself first for once". But I simply don't care about life in and of itself. (I respect others right to live and to not be intentionally harmed).

I'm genuinely not sure there is an "answer". I suspect people find/make their own meaning, and probably based off what they intrinsically enjoy in life?

@AlwaysMyself Good morning lovely. How are you? How was dinner with friends last night?

I’ve been thinking about you. Catching up on your posts. I realise it’s been so very hard for you recently with so many changes. You know despite my current journey I am here for you. You’re someone I want to make time for.

i will check out the book. My social worker was a bit perplexed on finding activities to do but she’s trying to find stuff and will let me know next week. She’s a good worker and I appreciate all her help.

What do you have on today? I’ll be on forums and just potting around the house. A friend is doing a zoom catch up with me in afternoon.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

You're so lovely @Cuddlebear 🥰. And I'm glad to hear your friend will give you a call later today, and that your social worker is trying to think of activities. Do you enjoy boardgames at all? (Ones without small print that is) or walks/swimming? I know Wilbur loves walks 😉. Any cinema movies of interest? (Are they easier to see because they're on a big screen? Although the subtitles on those little devices arent great i hear, and so few have on-screen Captions. I used to sometimes take a deaf friend to see foreign films with me, as they had subtitles 😋).

I wonder if there are any "tourist activities" of interest? I should look that up for my area too... I'm not a museum person or a general walker, but I do like hearing about the history of places when I travel (but then again, Europe is so much older than my city! But maybe I could find a regional aboriginal one about their history, that could be interesting...)... but also things like cooking classes are often advertised for tourists. Although usually its learning to cook that country's cuisine and im not sure what Aussie would be 🤣🤣 but maybe someone does Australian Chinese cooking classes?? How to make fried ice cream!

Actually I made fried ice cream myself once. It was a lot of effort. But tasted really good!

I am heading off in half an hour to a high tea lunch with one of my dogs (the one that looks like a cow, now the male fluffier grumpy one). No idea what it will be like, but it was an animal welfare fundraiser and I could take my little mischief muffin puppy so I decided to. If I remember I might take a photo for the forum of the food or the dog treat before she eats it. 😅 but that depends on me remembering lol.

Otherwise today should be restful i hope.

I watered the garden earlier. And I did clothes washing yesterday. So only chore left it to fold and pack away the clothes.

And once I come back from the lunch, my partner will be taking our 2 dogs for the night and tomorrow daytime - so I will only have 1 dog to look after this evening and most of tomorrow.

My back has been quite sore the past few days, so doing things on my computer or painting has been painful and only in 5-10min bursts. I made a visual map of my upcoming holiday using Wanderlog. I haven't used that app before; in the past Ive used Trip It to document my itineraries - but it doesnt have an overall map view. However Wanderlog does not have nearly as good actual documenting of itinerary bookings features like flights or trains/buses or even accommodation! You can only plot things onto a map as a location, or else make a generic "note".

I would like a cross between the two websites..

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself The high tea fundraiser sounds awesome! I’ve been to high tea once and I really enjoyed it. I think you’ll have a really good time especially with fur baby with you and other participants doing the same! Yes a photo would be great! Love to see what they served up for you.

It sounds like each website you are using has features that are good but not in the one place! Would be awesome wouldn’t it if both were combined to allow all the features needed to plan an intinery. When is your trip?

Im sorry your back is hurting. That’s hard having pain like that. Do you have any massage sessions coming up? Does anything like gentle swimming in warm water help?

Deep fried ice cream sounds so good. I’ve only ever had it in restaurants. I reckon if I tried it at home I’d have a sloppy mess lol! 😂

It’s good you’ll get a bit of a rest later today and just have the 1 dog to take care of. Especially with sore back thwt will make it much easier for you.

Unfortunately the cinema isn't great due to the tiny captions on the silly capti view device. It’s horrid. I can use my iPad a little to enlarge captions which is helpful. Not all platforms allow it but some do. I’ve had a look at some tourist type things but they are too expensive on a pension. The local community centre doesn’t have much on that interests me either. Our local council doesn’t put on very good stuff compared to others in Victoria. Yes I like to go for a swim but it’s still a bit too chilly. Melbourne is still in the lower temperatures.

Enjoy the high tea and will chat when you are back online.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself thanks for the honesty hun. I can imagine it to be difficult to really discuss this stuff cos a lot of people can find it very confronting. This my bread and butter tho lol 😉

I hope it's okay I share a few of my own thoughts and some stuff that has been helpful during my journey. I don't expect it to mean to you what it means to me, but I hope you can resonate with some of it 💜

There's a quote from Viktor Frankl (existential psychiatrist), "The meaning of life is to give life meaning." One of the reasons I am a fan of Absurdism as a philosophical stance is that it acknowledges the inherent conflict of being a meaning-making creature in an inherently meaningless universe. How do we find meaning and purpose when the universe responds to our thoughts, feelings, and actions, with silence? Absurdism as a way of thinking posits that we deny this meaninglessness by living fiercely and compassionately and by finding joy in the struggle itself.

One of the other things I believe in relates to that concept of like, 'we are the universe experiencing itself'... But I also see it as, the universe is learning about itself through our experiences as we walk through life. From these kinds of thoughts emerged a concept that I find very comforting - the meaning of life is to learn as much as we can, and to embrace those learnings that will help our soul to grow.

Last one - in positive psych, there's a concept around there being 3 components to 'happiness' - enjoyment, satisfaction, and purpose. Enjoyment is those more temporary moments of pleasure or joy; satisfaction is about engaging in activities that we find challenging but not to the point of overwhelm - it's more about that 'flow state' and being able to utilise your strengths to accomplish a goal; purpose is about being able to contribute meaningfully to a goal or purpose greater than oneself. This one really helped me to start balancing stuff out in my life, not getting too lost in just the 'enjoyment' part because it starts to get very empty, and finding areas of growth I still need to work on - towards that sense of satisfaction and purpose.

I'd be really curious to hear how these concepts sit with you, or if they've helped prompt some reflections - no obligation to reply of course 😉

Hope you're having a nice arvo 💜

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

My holiday is at the end of October for approx 3 weeks.

I have weekly massages which help with the pain in the short-term (have been doing this since earlier this year). Its not cheap, but i was so miserable in constant pain that i decided its worth prioritising so I am not as miserable.

Here are some photos from the high tea - I did forget to take a photo of dogs meal before she ate it, but I remembered part way through! 😆 so there is a photo of her eating it lol. Very fancy plate for the dogs!! She got raw steak with a raw egg on top. Nom nom nom she said.

I hear you with the cost of organised/tourist activities. ☹️ there a few things i would be content to learn to do, but the cost of things are not feasible. I can dream of a world where there are more community social/learning events that are free to attend (just cost of materials) and volunteer-led by people who enjoy and want to share their skills and be social. I think there might be more of these things happening slowly, but often they are word-of-mouth knowledge, but sometimes can be found on local social media pages.

I had a nap earlier after the high tea. Food coma lol. I think the carbs/sugars may have spiked my blood sugars and then the crash 😅. Little dog was happy to nap with me for a while but then he got bored lol.

How did you day pan out?

Hi @AlwaysMyself I also like down to earth people.

I want to respond properly to your post, so will do so tomorrow.

I’ve had a big couple of days planning, organising and having an event so I’m exhausted, but still need to fit training in!
