Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Ru-bee that sounds fantastic. 😊🥰

I have a 4nt package/tour in Borneo; its accommodation with 4wd (and I think 1 River?) Trip through the jungle area around the accommodation to look for wildlife. Wildlife viewing is my aim 😁. Hope to be lucky enough to see some orang-utans and other animals in the wild! 🥰 I have no doubt i will see birds at the least 🤣🤣

@rav3n i plan to do snorkelling on the Komodo boat tour. There are a few spots they stop at for this. They have equipment as part of the boat resources, so dont even have to add it to luggage. 😊 may see some manta rays or turtles if i'm lucky! I have a camera i can use underwater.

Ah well, many good experiences and life perspectives from living for 3 months in a town in a second-world country. I was in Maun, Botswana - right near the Okavango Delta where some of the best wildlife viewing is. Although I only went into the national park for a 2 night trip during that time (its not cheap to pay for a guide, vehicle, camp ground, etc).

I think its very valuable and many young people would benefit from it. Learning how some suburbs didnt have water connected for 4 months because of drought. Many people dont have cars; most have to walk or hope a "share taxi" comes along the road they can go in (if they can afford it). Some people have a donkey and cart still.

Internet via mobile phone was pretty good if you could afford it. Air conditioning was rare, and in summer the supermarket will kick out loiterers who are hanging around for free aircon in the 30-40 degree days.

On an Australian wage though it was soo affordable. I could buy whatever food I wanted without worry, even afford a "private taxi" which would take me all the way to my house (if it could manage the potholes and there was not a flooded road lol).

However if the supermarket didnt have any bacon for a month (supply shortages) then there was nothing i could do about it lol.

I realised how useful microwaves were when I didnt have one. Tried to soften butter for a cake in the sun, after a few hours it was still rock solid haha. It was winter.

I learned a little about car mechanics from watching my friend fix his car too many times. 🤣

I learned so much about their wildlife. And about some of the social issues around their indigenous populations and the dominant migrant populations. Learned a little about the corruption in their politics - but in contrast how little it was compared to most African countries! Mostly nepotism with a little bribery at times.

So many funny stories I forget them until something triggers a memory.

The land i lived on had a mastiff dog, a little terrier dog, and a big duck. The duck was the boss. It stole some meat bones from my bowl once. It also tried to peck me to demand my watermelon, but I told it who was boss and after that it would wait patiently for the rind.

And sometimes there was a hippo in the river behind the house. Always there was crocodiles, sometimes sunbathing on the riverbank.

Hiiiii @AlwaysMyself,

How are you today? 💛

Ooh how did the garage sale go in the end?

Also, love that you're painting little garden gnomes - so cute!

I am glad that you're aware of your threshold and remembering not to over-exhaust yourself, that's so important.

Okay, how are you feeling about this living arrangement with him at the moment?

My friend's partner has shared custody of his dog from his past relationship and the pup seems to have adapted well. This could really work for you both. ☺️

It sounds like you're really looking at what you can control here, particularly around your holiday - what you need to feel good and excited. What are you looking forward to the most?

Ooh, this clinical trial sounds very interesting! I hope you get to look into it, it would be amazing to trial something to see if it's a viable option for your healing journey.

How was your massage? 🤩

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hi @AuntGlow ,

Garage sale was ok (also very tiring) got a few things sold, but still a lot left too.

Massage was good - released some muscles that were very tight after the garage sale work. Its good having finally found a massage person who is good at what they do and doesnt charge as much as a physio.

I try to focus on what i can control and what i can do to appropriately advocate for my needs. Works well matched with my analytical problem-solving brain. But is still shit if there arent many things I can do in a situation other than to just wait it out lol.

Living situation has been ok (better) the past 2 weeks. I think he is in a better mood because he knows he is free to move out and see what he needs, and looking forward to it.

He got accepted for a lease today, and will move this weekend. We're both very civil about him taking the things he needs, rather than buying new things (as I had a lot when we started living together so there is a lot of things he doesnt have or bought jointly).

I have flagged that we need to chat about what the dog plan in. I will first if he had a preferred approach/idea, and work from there. At the very least I would ask/expect him to visit the dogs and walk them at least once per week. When we spoke about it in passing before he did want to have the dogs with him as long as the apartment was big enough. Hopefully he will also like the idea of having them on weekends when he isnt in a work office for 8 hours.

How was your day? (I am genuinely interested, not just being polite. Its important to me to share caring)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself,

I wonder if you could sell some things on marketplace or something too?

Absolutely! What kind of massage was it?

I am glad you are able to look at what you can control and advocate for your needs, that's really important. But you're right, waiting things out is... tough.

Okay, it sounds like things are progressing, which is positive! And it seems like you are keeping communication open, which is a good thing as well.

What might you need to get through this transition period?

Thank you for asking! My day was really nice, I had a slow morning - breakfast at a cafe with a book on counselling, hot pilates, and then here. Days like this make me feel very grateful. 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Yeah, listing some on marketplace. If that doesnt work I'll then try ebay.

@AuntGlow things are progressing OK with hsb moving out. I think it will be good to have my own space again. But I do mentally feel more pressure because of the need to do all the daily care of the dogs myself, even though I know in reality its not that much - just feeding them and giving their medications. It takes less than 30min a day.

My mother who we live with will be away for 3 weeks from next week, so that will be interesting timing. I will also be looking after her dog by myself now too. Shes a little concerned about the timing of him moving out and me being alone whilst she goes away for 3 weeks. But that is life. If I really need to I could probably ask a friend to spend a night if I was really bad. We will have a spare bedroom again once hsb moves out.

That sounds a nice way to start the day 😊. Im glad that it was a positive thing for you.

Is hot pilates doing pilates in a hot room? Or does it have heated mats to relax the muscles more directly? Ive seen signs for it, but dont really know what it is.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Sorry @AuntGlow . To better express the removed portion of the previous message.

In response to the question "What might you need to get through this transition period?"

I will be keeping my focus on the upcoming holiday and possibility of a new treatment trial option. And maybe after this holiday then start thinking about planning for where I would like my next one to be and what to see/do.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hello @AlwaysMyself,

How are you feeling today? I know last night was a bit vulnerable for you, so just wanting to check in and also say that I think you're doing an amazing job of reaching out when you need to.

I get that, it's still a big shift! And taking care of other living beings on top of your own needs is really bloody tough - so be gentle on yourself please.

I think turning to a friend during this time is a really good idea. I know it might feel like a lot at times, but it also sounds like an exciting opportunity to have your own space and time?

These are really wonderful things to look towards. Is there anyone in your world who you have been speaking to for support as well?

Hot pilates is heated with infrared panels, so the whole room is heated to about 35 degrees, but not the same as a 35 degree day, it's a bit different! It definitely allows you to soften and sink into a space where you're able to stretch and move more easily.

Talk more soon 🫶

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Oohh infra-red heat panels, fancy! I knew someone who loved IR saunas and said they were very good for the body. Ive never tried IR heat (sauna or room), I generally dont like the heat. But heat for muscle relaxing makes so much sense. It would be very interesting to experience the different type of heat feeling from IR rather than the sun. I know humid vs dry heat feels so much different (dry please if I have to choose one for me!) @AuntGlow

Today's been ok. Made a deliberate decision to spend the morning just painting and relaxing before heading out for an appointment and then to a friend's house for dinner.

A few of my friends know that my partner is moving out for 6mths, and 2 of those also know about my SI and are supportive for me to call them if I want/need someone to spend time with or talk to. Normally my mother would also be around as a support too.

It will be nice to not be constantly on eggshells around the house. And it will be nice for any mess/rubbish to be from myself only and not cleaning up after another person.

But I am also aware that I do sometimes struggle to live independently. But for 3 weeks should be fine to make myself keep up with laundry and dishes at a minimum. If I eat unhealthy takeaway or only shower on days I leave the house, thats OK if it helps me cope better for those 3 weeks. Id prefer not to, but its a fall back that is acceptable in the short-term to help cope.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Just a short (on my scale) update. Partner has been moving out this weekend for 6mth, apparently will stay as new place from tonight. Predominant emotions (not in any order of prominance) :

- positive feelings of him finally moving out

- annoyance that he hasn't actually packed all his things and/or made a list of things he needs to pack/take (he is ADHD, but he doesnt even try to write a list)

- annoyed that he will have to keep coming back to pick up more things as he realises he needs things

- annoyance that he doesnt dont his house chores this week and I am not predicting that he will do them this afternoon before he takes his last load

- annoyed that he hasn't even broached the topic of talking about where it leaves our relationship for the next 6 months. He acts in may ways that we are together, but then he is also moving out for 6mth because he doesnt know if he want to remain in a relationship to work on the problems. I know nothing more really as to how he sees us or boundaries currently. So I will just continue on as I have been for the past few months where I honour our commitments but dont expect any social or emotional engagement. He will talk when he is ready, or I will ask him after our holiday.

- disappointed that it has come to this after i have tried so hard to try to get him to engage and resolve things for the past 2 years. I have made allowances that have impacted my own wellbeing in the attempt to help him and reduce negative relationship/life stresses.

My brain says I should feel hurt (and it would be acceptable to feel that), but I think a lot of me is over that a long time ago. It's been a long time since I have felt that he genuinely cared for me as anything more than a social acquaintance.

I always asked that he would tell me if there were things I did that frustrated him or were a problem, and he would always say "no, its fine" even when I sensed he was unhappy with living together. It was my #1 'rule' for a relationship, to address things early before they fester or become a big issue.

My way of thinking is that if he cared about me, he would say so now. He would say that he still loves me but is finding it hard/depressing/etc with living together, and wants to see if the relationship would improve by having separate houses. But thats not what he has said. He has only said that he doesnt know whether or not he wants to be in a relationship / work to resolve the unhappiness in it. To me, that sounds like he doesnt want to be in a relationship with me. Maybe he is worried about being lonely without a partner. Maybe he has become accustomed to a cheaper life sharing costs with me. Maybe he likes having someone organise the household (bills, food, appointments, etc) for him. But I dont sense he values me for who I am. I haven't felt he does for a long time.

But what if he does decide he wants to try to keep the relationship and improve things between us?

That would be my preference - if and only if he genuinely still likes me for who I am.

But if I emotionally accept and move on now, I am not sure I will still feel open to a relationship with him again. It would definitely require him to reflect and explain what this period of time has meant for him and what has changed during it. (And of course couples counselling and an agreed way we can act to prevent this deterioration in the future).

I'm not looking forward to looking after 3 dogs by myself for the next 3 weeks. If I didnt have that responsibility I would not be feeling a bit stressed about the next few weeks. I don't want responsibility beyond myself (and work) currently. But the dogs are important, and not optional.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Jynx first post on first page gives an outline of my type of depression thinking re: constant and why I am hoping that PAT might be able to help.

I note that since that post i have started to see a counsellor who was mentioned to me as maybe suitable from a local crisis organisation. So far OK, but still getting through the her understanding how things today may relate back to my past, and how the many things I have tried (and still do) have not helped lift my melancholic experience of life or frequent passive SI.

Not a required read. Just if you were interested.

I cant imagine how long it would take if you read *everyones* 🤣😅😬
