Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Hey @Shaz51 , thank you for reaching out. 🥰 it means a lot this evening.

I'm a bit mixed today, but now that I'm wound down from being busy I'm starting to really feel my mood dip down. Trying to keep myself distracted with the forum, because I know if I let myself not be distracted that I will become dark. But its a fine line between allowing myself the downtime to process and not getting lost in the darkness.

I think my mum will be home soon, so I wont be home alone for much longer tonight. But I will have 3 weeks of being alone after today.

Are you doing OK?

Hope your pain isnt bad today, and hope Mr Shaz is doing ok?

Thanks @AlwaysMyself - might be a Friday arvo read, rather than Sunday night. But I do want to read! For me it feels like a privilege to get a glimpse into the complex and incredibly rich tapestries of folks' lives. Every human being is a complex constellation of unique experiences, yet there are always threads that tie us all together. I am constantly humbled and frequently inspired by what is shared here, so I appreciate the invitation to bear witness to your story 😊

I'll keep the tab tucked away to come back to next time I'm on. Anywho, also glad you found a counsellor who sounds like they're patiently trying to understand your experiences - I hope it works out well hun, and same goes for any PAT experiences you may have!! 💜

hey @AlwaysMyself! how are you holding up this week?

manta rays and turtles would be so cool, reminds me of finding nemo hehe! would love to see the pics you end up taking underwater!

wowwww. i imagine the culture shock when you first arrived must've been a lot, but sounds like you also learnt so much from the trip. sometimes even i forget how fortunate i am to be able to access ubers, air cons or even water with ease.

omg softening butter in the sun 😆 reading your post makes me want to travel like that too, i'd love to pick up some new skills and knowledge about different places. I WAS NOT expecting the duck to be the boss 🤣 aww and it even learnt to wait for you to finish your watermelon, i wish i could meet this duck!!

i see that your partner's moving out for 6mths now, and i can absolutely see why you'd be disappointed and upset with the way he's treating you. it seems like you've tried everything your power to make this work, to encourage him to communicate and be honest, but he's still not been able to follow through well. there's only so much you can do, and you've definitely done your part - the rest is in his hands. i know it's not easy to worry about the future and what's going to happen next, but i hope you can take things one day at a time, and see how you go. if he's not willing to initiate clear communications, perhaps you can set some boundaries for yourself and see how you go?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hi @rav3n , the week has been busy and tiring - and I'm only on day 2?! 😅 This whole week is looking very busy, but I declined a family event on the weekend because I do not enjoy them and I have the dogs to look after (a great excuse) and I predict I will be so tired on the weekend. I will count that as self-care, declining a gathering that I often find draining.

I booked an EAP session to talk about support through a work situation, but that appointment didn't provide what I was seeking. They were well-intent, but I feel they perhaps were trying to fit me into their own mould or preconception and not what I had said I booked the appointment for. I said I had a counsellor for my usual mental health difficulties, but that I booked the EAP because I wanted support for this specific work issue - because I didn't want to spend the time with my privately-paid counsellor on my work-related stress issues. I said I have difficulty when faced with injustice and unfairness (and have always found this emotionally challenging & triggering); his response was to ask if I had experienced trauma in my earlier years, and then went on about his experience in treating people with trauma and those types of therapies. He did not relate this at all back to feelings of injustice. It felt like his own special interest area (and no doubt he is experienced in it), but not what I was asking for support with. I also didn't think it was particularly appropriate to mention EMDR therapy for a service that only offers short-term (6 in total) sessions; I would have thought opening up traumatic memories would be better suited to a longer treatment/support scenario. 🤔

Hopefully tomorrow I will hear back from a legal service about whether they can give basic advice/review of my work concerns; Service 1 referred me to Service 2, who said they could help if Service 3 could not; Service 3 said no, so back to Service 2, but today's Service 2 person (as opposed to last week's) said no they cannot but did check with their manager since I had been told otherwise last week, so they suggested Service 4. Service 4 think I meet their eligibility criteria. Otherwise my only option would be to apply to a private legal service for pro-bono consideration. Fingers crossed Service 4 will come through.

I only need them to review my perspective and give me some guidance on whether or not they believe I have a solid legal point, and if so perhaps if they know any way to frame it (or to avoid framing it) to best relate it to employment laws. After that I am fine to persue it myself; I am assertive (you know, just in case you didn't notice 🤣) and thankfully have a basic (uni 101) level of HR and Business Law knowledge so that I feel confident in reading/interpreting laws/agreements. And I have nothing to lose (that I care about enough) to not pursue it. I am too principle-based and value-driven to not advocate for myself on it. I think I would feel bitter to the organisation if I did not get a voice and resolution of it. If it does not come to a negotiated agreement that I am not bitter about, I can leave the organisation if I feel too hurt or experience retaliation. Moving on helps me let go of bitterness. Having my voice heard and acknowledged helps me let go of bitterness about injustice.

I realise none of that above was about the home situation. 😅. When it rains it pours? No wonder my physical health is flaring up as a stress-response, despite not eating anything that would aggravate it. Back onto the medication for that condition tomorrow I think! I was hoping I could stop taking it for awhile, as it can cause other health issues long-term. I plan to talk to my GP about it, just need to schedule an appointment with them.

I don't really want to admit to myself or acknowledge how I feel underneath when I stop being busy. I have still been having a lot of thoughts, and among them the thought (protective) that I don't want my mother to have to cut her holiday short and return home, and I don't want the dogs to go a few days alone/hungry until someone realises. What's new though - I guess I'm putting others first again. But in this case I feel it is fair to put the dogs needs first because they are dependent.

But I know these feelings are lurking below if my mind is not busy. But I do not currently have the time or space to properly let them safely emerge and be acknowledged to then be allowed also pass by again. Maybe once I have finished work for the week, or the weekend. I see my counsellor on Fridays now, so I guess that is a space to do so. But I am safe; I have places to call if things escalated unexpectedly.

I'm sorry that's not happy "going well, everything's better than I expected" news. But I appreciate being able to be real and honest, and not having to put up a pretence. My current level of stress will reduce eventually - it may not resolve the SI, but I will be more balanced when stressful environments are not triggering anger or frustration or injustice.

I hope you are doing well this evening.
I am going to go to bed and sleep before work tomorrow, so please do not have any concerns if I do not respond until tomorrow evening.

Hi @AlwaysMyself 💛

I know this has been a big week of change for you with your partner moving out and having to take care of the dogs and home yourself.

How are you managing so far? And have you been able to connect with the friends who know what's happening for any more support?

Oh! Side note - did you ever chat with that friend who you really connect with but don't talk to much about messaging a bit more?

I am very curious to know what I/we could do to help you through this period of change as well.

Thinking of you and really want to acknowledge your courage here, learning to live alone is big. (But it can also be so empowering and wonderful, so I am excited to hear what you learn about yourself throughout this process.) 🥰

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hi @AuntGlow , i reached out to one of my friends (who are in the know) on the weekend to see how they were, and they also reached out to me today to see how the week has been which was nice. We've organised to catch up on Sunday - my first non-busy day available lol.

I have my semi-regular DnD (game) friends coming over on Saturday; one of them is in the know, the other 3 don't yet know that my partner has moved out. I guess the will find out (which is fine, they will be supportive but surprised; I may tell them prior to them coming, not decided yet).

The other friend I don't chat too much, yes and no (re: chat about messaging more). I haven't brought it up as a topic with them, but I have been in more contact than usual (e.g. an end-of-week good-weekend wish message). They tend to be more responsive to messages during work (which is how we know each other, although we don't work directly with each other or in the same location) - which concerns me that I'm distracting them, but they say they like to chat and its worthwhile. I think a weekly weekend well-wish message is a good method, as it's short and doesn't require them to respond unless they want to - but opens the door if they want to tell me how the week has been or about their weekend plans.

I was quite surprised a few weeks ago when they checked in to see how I was after we had chatted. I think that is what encouraged me to feel OK to maintain contact with them more since.

I have lived alone previously (such as when I was overseas for 3 months, I didn't even have my mother who I've otherwise lived in the same house as), but not with dependent animals to also look after. And not with starting from a place of such a backlog of housework (still haven't unpacked things from moving earlier in the year, for example). And back then I was working less hours also. Plus I didn't have all the external stress of the relationship or workplace issues at those times. It's just a lot all at once currently - and I know that it won't always be this much at once.

It's hard not knowing what support from afar would help. We can celebrate by 'small wins' that I achieve on top of the daily mandatory things (today I did the dishwasher and watered half the plants; tomorrow I plan to water the other plants and hopefully advertise some more items for sale - plus my 2x appointments). I find setting clear task-goals for myself helps, and if I can just set 30-60min of "extra tasks" then it should be achievable most days (not all).

I don't know what will help me; most of the things that would help me to chat about with someone is not suitable for the public forum. And it tends to be the evenings when they trouble me the most - not conveniently timed for when my counselling appointments are, alas. I'm not really sure what would help during those times, because the phone lines are aimed at people in crisis / high-distress, they have a lot of time-demand, and often they cannot understand how I experience the world because it is atypical even of depression.

Aw that's lovely! What will you do together? @AlwaysMyself

I am sure the game will be a welcome reprieve from all the business of your week. Definitely listen to your body here, if it feels right to tell them beforehand, then you absolutely should. 💛

Oh, it sounds like they really appreciate you!! I would trust their word (if you can), it seems to me like they might not be much of an initiator, but will reciprocate when they have the space - so when they check in, you know they really mean it!

Absolutely, this does add compounded stress - extra housework and supporting other living creatures - it genuinely is a lot. It sounds like celebrating your small wins and setting clear goals is really helpful. What's your small win from the last 24 hours? And do you have a goal for today?

Hmm, maybe you can try to contact Beyond Blue in this instance? There is also another one that's just counselling focused and open in the evenings... I will find it and get back to you!!
