Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Oh, a trip to Qld - for holiday? @rav3n

Its only just occured to me that one of the perks of working on the forum is you can take your work on holiday within Aus with you lol.

I had a job like that once before where I could work from anywhere, didnt have to stay locally.

I don't mind sharing what the trial is, but am wanting to be within the content guidelines. Its one of the allowed studies after the substances have now been regraded to a Schedule 8 medicine to allow for studies into treatment-resistant depression and PTSD.

I think they exclude people with a history of attempts due to clinical risks? Especially as for this it would require coming off my antidepressants a month prior. I'd actually be curious to see also if coming off my medication made any difference to my thoughts, but without a good reason to do so I'm not doing that. A clinical trial is a good reason though. So I will chat to my GP about it next time I see him (which should be soon because I do need a new script for something... I always end up with 3 or so small things when I go see them lol. Nothing is usually worth a full appointment cost by itself lol).

@AlwaysMyself Hello my beautiful friend. How’s are you today?

I am really glad you reached out here. And I will remember to only discuss this on this thread. 🙂

Im sorry your relationship has been stressful and by the sounds of it not meeting your needs. I honestly think you’ve done everything possible to make this relationship work and to me it sounds like you’ve been doing the “heavy lifting”. That isn’t fair or sustainable and relationships do need each person to actively participate and to have each others back.

The idea for him to move into his own place soubds like a good one to me. As you said this will give you both some space and it certainly sounds like this would be good for both of you. It will also show him just how much you actually do and how little he has been doing. It’s awful living on edge in your own home. It’s exhausting living like that and while the living apart trial is going on you will have an opportunity to start to feel relaxed in your own space. That’s something that will bring you some comfort too.

You don’t have anything to feel ashamed of at all. You’ve actually gone above and beyond in making things work. This isn’t a failure at all and certainly not on your part. Talking to your sister and explaining the situation will help her understand and empathise. No one’s judgement is useful here at all because in all honesty you’ve shown nothing but love and maturity towards your partner but thing is he’s not putting in the effort he needs to and that’s not something anyone can change but him. You’ve literally provided all the things he needs while loading too much on yourself.

I can understand how hard it is to make decisions about the dogs. It’s very hard to know what to do. What I do know is that dogs are happy being with their humans. You seem to interact and care for them more plus they’ve got space where you live now. That’s a real benefit to them. I know it can make it harder to travel for longer periods and that’s a really valid consideration. Perhaps while you trial living apart he can commit to taking them for walks and help with daily grooming? Maybe a middle ground to start off with? I can tell how much you love them and enjoy their company.

Im glad you have a safety plan though. Thats really important.

Apologies it’s been 4 days since you posted. I’ve just started settling in at APARC and wasn’t online.

@AlwaysMyself i'm visiting qld for my friend's engagement! and then i'll also have some time to explore around too. yesss definitely a perk to working remotely! if only i could travel internationally and work too haha 😋 where's your family holiday, is it within your state?

oh yes, that makes sense - and thanks for being mindful of the guidelines! there's definitely a lot to consider, in terms of having to come off of antidepressants for the trial - how long have you been on them? haha i'm the same with GP visits, i never go for just 'one' thing, i like to have a lil list of things so i make the most of it too! gotta get our moneys worth 😎

Thank you @Cuddlebear 😊

And its so good to hear you have begun to settle into PARC -- wishing you onwards and upwards on recovery from here!!

Interested to hear how you are and what its like when/if you feel up to it. (Of course as always no pressure to!)

I have 1 hour downtime now (unless I have dinner early before then) in which I plan to watch TV and paint gnomes.

An engagement! How lovely! @rav3n have a blast celebrating 🥰.

My upcoming holiday is overseas (Borneo and Komodo). 😊

I actually don't think its physically possible to take a holiday within my own state/territory 🤭. I mean, I could do a staycation within 30min of home.

But that stays on this thread too, because I don't advertise where I live other than "south-east aus area" because yeah its too small an area 🤣.

Happy for my friends on this area to know though - I know you're not locals, and also that you don't judge me even if you did accidently realise you knew me lol. 🥰

Have I ever mentioned that I lived overseas on a tourist visa for 3 months? Working and studying remotely?

@Shaz51 *waves back* with Iced coffee in hand.

How exciting having that holiday coming up @AlwaysMyself I'm also going to visit Komodo next year! I've just booked my accommodation. Would love to visit Borneo too one day, that's definitely a dream trip. Have you been to either of those places before or is this the first time?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

This will be my first time to Komodo and Borneo @Ru-bee 😊 but I have wanted to go there since a teenager, so its been high on my list for ages.

I have been to other areas of Indonesia and Malaysia before though.

Are you also going to other areas of Indonesia on your Komodo trip?

Let me know if there is anything you want me to take special notice of on my trip to report back on! 😁 I am doing a 3nt boat around komodo with a local tour operator, from Labuan Bajo. I have been to LB for a few days over a decade ago, but dont remember much of LB specifically. But it looks like it has really boomed in tourism in the in-between years!!

I love travel, so anytime anyone wants to talk travelling im there lol.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Ooooh I'd been looking into those tours and they all look incredible @AlwaysMyself Unfortunately I'll be going with my partner who is not a fan of boats and water. He's a good sport and will come on day boat trips and do most of the water activities with me (really wanting to snorkel with some manta rays while we're there!!) but staying on a boat overnight would've been a bit of stretch for him so we'll be based in LB and be doing day trips across.

We'll be going to Lombok briefly but will be spending the longest time on the Gilli Islands. We went last year for the first time and loved it for a completely relaxed holiday destination which is what we were looking for...I just slipped Komodo in there for a bit of exploration and excitement haha.

Do you have any tours booked for Borneo? Are you hoping to see orangutans?

@AlwaysMyself thank you!! 💗 also i'm loving the gnomes progress!!

ooo i've never visited Borneo or Komodo but i've seen pics and they look like amazing. i hope you have THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE THERE!! were you planning on learning things like diving/snorkeling stuff here?

that's so fair!! i completely understand not wanting to share that info across other threads. ofc, i'd never judge 💖
