Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Hi @Cuddlebear, last night was first time I’ve been able to login since the change to the login process.

this link will bring you up to date for this week. https://saneforums.org/t5/Our-stories/Flutterbug9-s-space/m-p/1872381/highlight/true#M251980

I did a separate post for last night in that same thread and will do another update post tonight.

atm, I’m wanting to go home. Yesterday afternoon I was told some sad news about cousin who is 6mths younger than me, recent prognosis for him is he will not live to see his 63th birthday in December this year.
I want to go home now (discharge is tomorrow morning). I need to be alone and in complete quiet to process it and deal with the emotions. Info has brought back very sad, unpleasant memories of 7years ago and last couple mths of my MILs life.

@AlwaysMyself How are you? I’ve been thinking about you and hoping you are making progress with the trial and everything else that has been going on. I’m sorry I have not been on forums. I’m not really living life and feel very disconnected.

I know this has been a very hard and busy time for you and that you’ve got lots of admin and appointments etc to get to and then process outcomes. Just the DSP and NDIS alone are big things to do. I really hope you are taking good care with you send and have people there to support you in real life too. But I am interested in how you are doing and I do care. Tag me whenever you do come on.

I haven't seen the SBS film sounds interesting. I’ll will link it in my SBS app. At the moment it’s hard to watch anything. I’m so shutdown moving is almost impossible.

Things for me are simply hard. I can’t access public mental health support and live with the chronic symptoms of complex ptsd, anxiety, panic and depression. I can’t even do basic things anymore for mysekf. It’s been really hard and a very lonely and isolating place to be.

So many of us are really struggling and it just breaks my heart. I wish the forums had more staff that can help while everyone is going through the rough times.

Thanks @MissGremlin @Blackcloud

I’ve had couple naps today in between starting to process what was said, memories brought back to what was said. Also, due to way something else was said, whether to cut ties with one cousin. I understand she’s possibly not dealing with news that one of younger siblings has terminal cancer, I’m over the way she chooses to say things on regular basis, words and tone that she knows everything and that only things that matter are things relating to her

@Flutterbug9 just posted on other thread re: infusion & shoulder, so won't repeat it here. But wanted to add I'm really sorry to hear about your younger cousin's diagnosis & prognosis. :'( . Sending even more hugs and support. Sorry to hear another cousin is not supportive & sounds to be having a negative impact; I hope you are able to decide what is best for you right now and follow that even if it might be hard to. Not a nice situation for yourself or your younger cousin; I'm sorry.

@Cuddlebear sorry you're also still very unwell. Chronic without relief is so hard and discouraging, especially when there are not sufficient practical or emotional supports available to help - I hear you. Supports paid privately are so expensive, especially when on pension or low-income, and even more so when multiple and intensive are needed due to multiple and severe conditions. :'( .

Do you get any NDIS funding for psychology supports? (whether a "mental health recovery coach" or as a support for mentally-processing the impacts of your physical disabilities, even if not for the ptsd/anxiety/panic/depression itself). I realise I don't know which conditions you receive NDIS funding for and which are not within your funding-approval.

@Chasingsunsets interested to hear how you are, if you would like to share. but never pressure. just know you're always welcome to, no matter what is or is not going on for me at the time.

@Cuddlebear @Chasingsunsets wish i could say I have been well. I haven't been. but i'm just making it through every day doing the essentials. holding onto the promises I have made, even when i don't want to. One more dose day left - next week. only time will tell what happens - whether i get the therapeutic medication or not. if I don't then hopefully i'll have the opportunity to ask the psychiatrist about what it would cost & availability (timeframe) if i wanted to try it privately; and then whether or not I am motivated enough to spend that much money on a single treatment (dosage day + integration session) (or indeed if I will even have that much money in 6-12 months to be able to afford it even if I want to).
