Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself I will add tag for you in a post on another thread. Atm physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted, with tears everyday

appointments this week have all gone well. Next week will be another fairly busy week with at least one thing on most days. Appointments booked for 2 different days in first week of June for next B12 shot plus to talk with GP about referral and/or most scans (see other post).

Injection for bursitis has helped and that pain has gone.

Only reason I know I felt nervous, wary about trusting my psychologist was due to all the negative things that happened with the previous one. I’ve gotten along really well with my pain management Dr from first appointment (desperately wanting to talk to her atm). It really does help when it happens. I’ve only spoken to my pdoc once on the phone, she sounded very pleasant. My thoughts on having been asked to fill in the questionnaire is a positive thing.

I totally get it that you are not able to be on the forums very often. Those things happen at times. There is no pressure for you to reply within any type of timeline. same as everyone on the forums, you reply when you can

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself

thank you. Also there’s been some things I’ve been thinking about this week — the uncertainty of me pursuing a career due to my barriers — like as much as I wish to ‘work’ just to gain an extra income apart from only my DSP because with the rent prices for private rooms becoming expensive than shared rooms, and also living in a social or community housing in the future is quite dangerous too, I’m feeling quite scared and worried about the uncertainty for the future based on all this. There’s pros and cons for everywhere but man I wish the rent prices for all kinds of rooms stayed the same as it was decades ago. Also, I just don’t feel or think it would be possible for me to have a career like ever which is fine because it’s not that I really wanna work. But yeah. Also I don’t understand why every role requires job interviews when in my opinion I think they should be selecting people that really need a job due to such circumstances instead of being selective in choosing candidates that fit the ‘requirements’ they’re looking for

Same here, overseas travel especially to Asia has always been something I would like to do as a solo traveller haha 😄 I hope I can go to South Korea too if I ever do end up getting approved for the funding scheme. Though it won’t be easy being there because of the language barrier and the fact that I’m always on my own lol. I know when I went to Korea ages ago there were many times there where I wanted to have a mental breakdown (cry) out of frustration because of the fact that I know that not a lot of Koreans there know English 🥲 I do use the translator app to show them the translation especially if I wanna ask them or order something but mannn if only English was also widely spoken there too then I wouldn’t be having to deal with all the frustration with the language barrier 😅

I wish countries like Singapore would enable the funding scheme but sadly (but also not so sadly) Korea is the only country that offers it

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself also not to mention, this was the post that I wrote on another thread the other day that I wanna share to you:

"Its just not easy living in a world where almost the entire population in the world aren't willing to go on to actually help those that are actually struggling and be willing to offer them a shoulder to cry on.

Well considering my barriers with verbal communication and me being highly sensitive, I dont see myself in being able to get to any career - including one that im interested in because very much all the roles that exist require you to verbally communicate with customers/clients and stuff but also in all workplaces theres no 'perfect' coworkers or anything like that lol and its sad how we live in a world the way that it really is

I thought of having a career just to get a bit of extra income adding onto my DSP payments but you know...lol

so yeah, not possible. and like...I just dont wanna end up having to face such hard situations in the future (like having to live in a shared house or ....living in a public/social housing) especially despite todays cost of living with private room rent prices being unaffordable these days.

I dont know why ive been having these kinda thoughts as of this week...hahaha...."

also, the fact that my support coordinator has not responded to my text or email regarding my queries about the new NDIS reforms which I find it pretty rude and unprofessional on her part but I was told by others that it could be due to a number of reasons: she's worried herself, she doesn't know what to tell me, management might tell her not to comment on it, she may not know more than I do

and since then, it makes me think of what I now think of support coordinators. luckily my SC is nice and was able to advocate for more funding for my current plan during our plan review meeting back in February. I've heard that SCs for others aren't helpful which I'm not surprised about. I think LACs are even worse to be honest.

sooo many thoughts I've been having this week - and its why im passionate about studying psychology and sociology. FYI, the degree I'm doing is actually called Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) but you can actually pick a major as well, which in my case, I picked sociology. I also wish I can learn more about disability and inclusion as well, considering that I'm also part of that group and the fact that we continue to get mistreated by society is awful - no I'm not gonna become an advocate, I just wanna like learn the content pretty much if that makes sense.

Good evening @Flutterbug9 🥰

How are you?

Please let me know when you do learn more throughout therapy, I am really interested! And I am keen to know how I can support you too.

I understand what you mean - there is a fine line between expanding our window of tolerance and flooding our nervous system. I think knowing when to leave and take care of yourself is important. I can struggle in group social situations too - especially when I don't feel comfortably connected to myself/don't know what parts of myself to bring to the table. Do you ever find that comes up for you?

Having a connected care team sounds really helpful, I like this idea a lot.

Ah, that would feel really exhausting to hold after some time, especially if it's repeated... I wonder if you could tell them how you're feeling? RSD or not, I think feeling singled out is enough to make anyone feel vulnerable. 💛

I didn’t go last Thursday. Physically, emotionally and mentally it wasn’t a good day @AuntGlow

I struggle to feel like I fit in. Lot of times, as soon as activity or event is finished I feel like to proverbial “fish out of water”. I feel uncomfortable being in setting of general social chatting.
Times I physically haven’t been able remove myself from the situation I’ve either disassociated (that then comes with its own feelings of anxiety and shame ie has everyone around me noticed) or I feel panic attack starting.

Hello how are you? I’m sorry for massive delay.

I can understand all the emotions of diagnosis and how it feels in everyday life too. It must be challenging too thinking back now over the years on why this has impacted you and your life and feelings and experiences of the world. I’m glad that the diagnosis are validating and give you an opportunity to understand and provide hope in treatment for recovery. I’m glad this has happened as you go through the trial too as it gives you better insight. What is a pdoc?

How is the trial going and how are you? I’m sorry I’ve missed a lot here.

@Flutterbug9 How are you? I have been unable to check messages. I’ve been thinking of you.

@Chasingsunsets How are you? I’ve been thinking if you too.

I’ve been really unwell and my days are survival days. Nothing has improved. I’m also losing a long term support worker which has really affected me badly. I’m trying so hard to connect here but feel unwelcome. Eventhough I know people here like me I feel like I’m an outsider. I’m so sad and feel like I have no hope. I’m in constant panic all day everyday with anxiety and disassociation. I’m sorry it’s not good news.

Rant wanting

Also another update I have regarding the Saturday program, there’s this one particular participant who is also autistic but she f#*ken p!sses me off to hell. I have a strong feeling that she has something against me & I absolutely can’t stand it especially with the way she does things that give me the impression that she hates me & wants to avoid me. But from the very beginning during our very first ever workshop early this year, I knew she would be someone I don’t like. Like she seems nice and all but I can’t stand her.

What I noticed by the time I tried to connect with other people like me in a real life environment is that the way they present themselves and do things (even though I understand that that’s part of how our brains work) that I personally don’t like especially when I’m in the picture give me the feeling that they hate me and so that creates a trigger to my emotions and thoughts in a sense that I do need to vent to someone about it. I thought being able to connect with other people like me in real life would be easy, but that turns out not to be the case, and so I find that it’s much better that I connect with the other ND people online, which is what I currently do. 🙂

I mean I’ve only ‘worked’ with her once but what prompted me to create this post was two things she did that I notice when I was around

1. 2 days ago (Sat 23 May) when I was walking past her and looked at where she was standing at, she looked at the opposite way until I finished walking past her. I know she wanted to look away from me which I absolutely can’t stand

2. the same day I was working with her which was on a February (because the teacher asked if she’d like to come over the table where my support worker and I was sitting at & she did) we decided to leave the classroom to take a bit of a reset after we ‘worked’ with each other through an activity in class. She was the first one to leave the class to go to the common room before both my support worker and I left in order to go to the common room as well. She was already a bit ahead from us while we were heading to the common room, however by the time she saw us about to come to the common room she immediately held back from going there and decided to stay back somewhere else.

Edit: to clarify, when I say we ‘worked’ together, we basically just worked on the activity individually without talking to each other. my support worker did communicate with her a bit on my behalf at that time

A quick note to say I'm still around offline; but I wanted to say "hi" and let you all know I still think of you despite not feeling up to spending time here (multiple reasons; including being so busy with appointments/life-admin and needing "mental downtime").

@Blackcloud @MissGremlin @Flutterbug9 @Chasingsunsets @Cuddlebear

I'm sorry I can't reply individually at current, but I have "supported" the posts so you know I have read them. And my heart goes out to each of you. I care. I want to walk with you on your journey - but forum-style is just a bit less accessible to me right now. But do keep me in the loop as much as you'd like to, because I do care and like to catch-up read like just now when I can. Please don't take a lack of reply as a lack of care or want to know. 🤗😖.

The psychotherapy through the clinical trial is going well, although we hope to have the "full experience" of the therapy next time. Two down, last one to go in a few weeks (of medication day - still have weekly talking). Half way through the active-phase of the trial now. Won't know which medications I received (each time) for sure until December (at earliest).

@Cuddlebear I saw a film yesterday that make me think so much of you. It also helped me realise a few things myself of why I connect so deeply to communities where there are communication-barriers and isolation; I cried watching parts of it. It was a documentary-film about the creation & journey of the people who made & 'performed' an experiential theatre show called "Imagined Touch", and this documentary of the same name (it's available on SBS On Demand if anyone is interested: https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/tv-program/imagined-touch/2387404355967 ). I know it won't be the same story as yours, but I felt I should share it with you all the same. You may already know of it though, since it was made in Victoria by Deafblind.

(Oh, and "pdoc" in my last post was shorthand for psychiatrist. Sorry!)
