Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Hi @AlwaysMyself you are a great support on the forums. I think I can understand to some degree your reticence for reaching out, but I'm glad that you did even though the experience was less than ideal. Lovely that your friend followed up with you, that sounds very positive.

And wow amazing that you went through with your job interview and did ok - just turning up seems amazing to me, given your weekend.

@Cuddlebear I am horrified to hear about your new place not meeting, what to me, are basic safety standards. I don't think you should have any hesitation in reporting these issues. I am glad you have turned off the gas for yourself and your dog. I hope you are able to get these things resolved ASAP.

These PARC places sound interesting and good. We do not have them in NSW, or at least not many (I think only one) and definitely not outside capital city. so I don't know really anything about them. They seem ideal especially if you live by yourself. In NSW you would have to get a public hospital inpatient stay (very difficult) or a private psych hospital stay (ridiculously expensive). So many people fall through that gaping hole.

I'm very glad you have each other to chat to. And also @Appleblossom to support each other.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thanks @AuntGlow 🥰. Pain hasn't been as bad today, back to the "normal" level of pain rather than the added cold-snap pain too. Looking forward to a proper rest day tomorrow, not even going to tell myself I have to do housework/chores unless I want to do them.

I do plan/hope to keep in more regular general chat with the friend I went for a walk with on Sunday; she is less introverted and usually has more available time than others.

I do always ask people first if they are available, to always give them an out. Usually I like to do it via text/message without telling them I'm not well - just asking if they are available to talk (because even just a distraction is fine if they dont want to talk about what im feeling). I had done that to one person before I went to the drop-in place, but they were busy. I worry that if I call to ask if they are available, they will feel obliged because they will likely be able to hear the wavering-control in my voice indicating I am not in a good frame of mind.

The friend who did come to meet me, I'd like to keep in closer contact with them, but they are not a "social" person. I think it is my most unusual friendship 😅 because somehow they are one of the most trustworthy and safest people I know locally, and have said I can contact them whenever I need, and appreciate who I am and my friendship, but at the same time we don't talk/msg often. We used to work closely together - they were like a mentor - which is where our mutual respect, trust and friendship developed and hence the lack of social (outside work) time. This was actually the first time we had met outside of a workplace situation, even after 3 years of friendship (this is their degree of introversion & need for downtime outside work demands). I know it sounds weird, but they honestly are one of the most reliable and trustworthy friends I have, but I reserve reaching out (beyond a monthly check-in message to see how they are / say hi, or for work things) for when I can't get onto anyone else and really need someone to talk. They are the longterm slow-and-steady friendship development type. But I guess it makes the fact they said they would come meet me, without any hesitation (even though I gave them an easy out option) and asked if I needed them to bring anything too, it makes that even more amazing from them.

@Appleblossom Hello lovely how are you? I’m so happy that you were able to express how you feel with your psychologist. I realise what a big step that is to be so vulnerable and that it is not easy to do.

@AlwaysMyself by sharing how you feel with honesty and being vulnerable you’ve helped us to take thwt step too. Thank you. Finding people who can understand with love and empathy isnt easy so we are very lucky to have this here between us on the forums.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you today? Are you enjoying your first day off for the working week?

Ah yes that is good that you see counsellor on Tuesday. I know it’s just the 2nd appointment with this particular counsellor but I do hope you will be able to come out of thwt appointment feeling understood and supported.

It can take a little while to hear anything after a job interview. Fingers and toes crossed for you. It’s good you can ask for constructive feedback too that can be really helpful.

I am better from breathing in gas. It’s been really hard dealing with the issues in this new place and it’s beyond disappointing the way the real estate and owner are behaving. I just feel trapped in an unsafe place and didn’t expect this type of problem. I’m now stuck here having signed a lease.

APARC accepted me and now there’s about a 2 week waiting list. I’m nervous but hopeful it might help me improve as I’m really in a bad place. One thing is that the facilities are really good and homely. There’s good accessibility with tactile on the ground and a nice layout. Wilbur is I’ll have a huge yard to enjoy too. I’ve never been to APARC this is my first time. I’m lucky it’s only about 15-20 minutes by car from where I live.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear the world has a sense of humour I think. My "day without having to go out anywhere or do anything" got turned upside down. I did have a sleep in and didnt get out of bed until 830am. But at 10am something urgent came up for my mum and she needed me to instead take my grandma out. So I left home at 10:15am and didnt get back home until nearly 6pm! 🤪

Im pretty physically tired now from it.

But tomorrow I only have 2 things: dog grooming and a massage whilst they're being groomed. Massage = painful during but less pain for days after, so that it always a good thing. Fingers crossed the dog grooming goes well and silly boy doesnt hurt himself this time. I cant believe its already been 4 weeks since last time??

I am still so glad you got into the APARC. ☺️🥰 I really do hope it helps you feel better and "reset" after the very stressful time you've been having.

Amazing that it has tactile aids and even a yard for Wilbur!! 😁🥰 I bet he is going to love a new place to sniff around too?

I hope the 2 weeks until then won't feel too long for you -- we are here with you. Be kind and gentle to yourself. One foot after the other, slow is fine. You are cared for here 🥰.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Sorry if I'm butting in, but if you wanted to @Cuddlebear, could you terminate the lease due to these safety concerns? It sounds like there are real and obvious safety concerns and that the place does not meet criteria for leasing.

As I said before, these APARC sound quite good. It's great that there are tactile surfaces and a yard for Wilbur. I hope it turns out well for you, especially given your current living situation, sounds like it could be a good break

@AlwaysMyself I'm glad you have a friend you are able to call. Sorry your "day off" didn't turn out, but I hope the effects of your massage go to plan and the dog grooming goes well

Grooming went well today! Two happy healthy clean and fluffy dogs now.

A very nice sunny day here today, and one of the dogs likes to sun-bathe, so I took a photo of him nice and clean fluffy in the sun for you. It also has my 12yo Gerbera plant (pink flowers) in the background. Somehow they still flower through winter. I feel a bit more comfortable sharing my dogs photos here now I've sussed people out a bit more 🙂, and people are unlikely to come to this thread too (and yes it shows on my profile, but again the chance someone knows my dogs and happens to check my profile is so slim. Biggest concern would be Google/search engine indexing the photos; I'm not sure if these forums content is set to "no index" for search engines. Actually, I can check that out myself if im on my laptop later!)

Enjoy my fluffy boy - the one who hurt himself last time:

@Cuddlebear i hope today is going ok for you? (I haven't read other threads yet to see any posts from you). If not, I hope this happy fluffy picture brightens it just a tad, and knowing that I trust you and the SANE family enough to post it. 🥰

Oh, I think @Shaz51 might like the photo too - for the gerbera plant I've mentioned in the past. ☺️

So many of the other plants looks half-dead, but its just the winter effect! 😅 they will be back to looking alive again in a month or two I bet.

@AlwaysMyself Good morning friend how are you? Here I was thinking you’d have a nice relaxing day yesterday and instead you were flat off your feet. How was your grandma? Did you go out on some fun times or were you running errands? I hope after a very busy day you were able to get a decent sleep.

What a good idea to have dogs groomed and you have a much deserved massage. I hear you on the pain while being massaged but it does help afterwards.

Yeah APARC will hopefully give me the space to get myself together a bit. It was good that the set up is comfortable for us. Wilbur was already very popular with everyone smiling a lot when they saw him there.

I wasn’t online yesterday it was a bad day and I couldn’t muster even coming on the forums. I’m trying a different approach today by being on forums a little to try to stay connected and see what people are upto and how they are.

@AlwaysMyself What a gorgeous fur baby looking so nice and clean too! Love their coat! I got it wrong I thought your massage and fur babies groom was today. I’m still so impressed with the 12 year old plant. They’re hard to keep alive those ones so whatever you are doing is a total winner!

It’s always wise to check things out for privacy and safety. I’m glad you feel that there’s no harm in posting fur baby pic. Personally I don’t go looking for people and looks to me like others are the same here.

It cheered me up seeing his photo sun bathing. Was he ok yesterday with the groom? No injury? He looks very content in the photo.

@Cuddlebear Hope today is abit better for being a little engaged online instead *hugs*.

Let me know if I can help or distracts, or listen to what you're thinking. Whatever helps you.

I am currently letting some spiced oil simmer on the stove for 1hr.
