Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself so proud of you for taking that step to reach out before it got too much. i really love how you've reframed it as 'well-intentioned' when the person didn't support you in the way you would've preferred. i think that practicing that sort of reframe can be really powerful, it's definitely helped me in pushing myself to keep seeking alternative supports.

it's really great that you've reached out to your friend later too. i hear you about not wanting to rely on reaching out to friends too much, and i can see that you care heaps about their wellbeing too. finding that balance of reaching out to them and supporting yourself in alternative ways is a good topic to discuss with your counsellor. it's something i found a bit tricky figuring out too but now i do feel a bit more balanced with it.

wishing you all the best with your interview!! 💙

@AlwaysMyself Hello friend. How are you going today? I’m sending you the best of luck for your job interview.

I am really sorry you had an awful day yesterday. I do however really really admire your strength in reaching out to the service you attended and then your friend too.

Im sad to hear that the service didn’t meet the needs you had yesterday. You are such a kind and caring soul even considering that the worker tried their best. I genuinely was glad you did reach out to a friend and spent quality time with them. Please remember it’s always ok to reach out and you are not a burden to people at all. I know we havnt met in real life but I can tell you too are an amazing friend and would want your friends to reach out if they needed to. I encourage you to reach out. I want to reassure you that friends want us to be ok and would want you to reach out for support. I’m so thankful you have those type of friends in your life. I wish I could do more as the online stuff is less able to comfort you and just be there for you. I’m here though and I do actually care about you. I feel like we are friends and you’ve been an enormous support to me to be honest. If we met in real life I think we’d hit it off beautifully. 🙂

Did you take some pain medication? I hope so just to give you some relief from pain and some space to heal mentally.

Please let me know how you are when you are able. Sending you virtual hugs and know that I care and am thinking of you.

Thanks @Cuddlebear @rav3n @Appleblossom .

I think the interview went OK. Not my best interview, but thats OK - especially as I am aware I don't have a lot of formal experience in the area and more theory, observation and support/planning roles so far. Given how I was over the weekend, I am content with the effort I put in. Will wait and see what happens.

You are correct @Cuddlebear that I would always want a friend in genuine need to reach out when distressed. But I guess its hard for me to do so in return if I don't know (or believe) that they are of likewise mind. I know some people who would not want an acquaintance or casual friend to reach out to them. My closer/longer-history friends are not local.

A friend who missed my call caught up with me on Sunday instead which was nice, and checked in again with me yesterday to see how I was. That makes me feel a little more comfortable to reach out to them next time because they actively followed up how I was (which I percieve as showing genuine care).

How are you today @Cuddlebear ?

I hope each day may get just one step easier as you slowly get used to where things are in the new place? What day does your support worker come? (Sorry I've forgot which day!)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Congrats on the interview @AlwaysMyself it can be good to keep in practice.

…learning the levels of trust and reciprocity in friendships seems pretty tricky to me. I always do these steps and try and protect friendships. My isolation began outside of my control as a young kid. Everyone had problems and somehow we had more than most, and it was clear people didn’t want to be burdened. Even just mentioning my reluctance to discuss my suicidality to you, helped me express it to my psychologist this week, so there is space for being both vulnerable and in our strength and stretching ourselves. Thanks

@Cuddlebear Gentle hugs

hoping you have some company and help to sort things soon.

I am glad you were able to broach the topic with you psychologist this week @Appleblossom 😊. That's a really good brave step. Well done!

I hope they were supportive and responded well to the information? How do you feel afterwards/now?

She is lovely @AlwaysMyself I have only been with her a few months, but we seem to see the therapeutic alliance similarly. I feel better that we touched on it in a way that was authentic but didn’t drag my mood down in the session. I was brief and passionate but got a lot to focus on at the moment, so we noted it for deeper discussion later. At least I was not brushing it aside or masking, which I had to do so long cos of kids. Ie managing feelings due to genuinely vulnerable needs of others.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Congratulations for doing the job interview and for giving it a shot. I totally agree that given how you’ve been feeling actually turning up and giving it your best effort is a huge win. Well done. I hope you have yourself a treat to celebrate your efforts. You deserve it. When might you hear back regarding how it went?

I could tell by your actions here and by getting to know you that you would want your friends to reach out. I love how your friend has kept in touch and checked in. That’s a really caring thing to do and you deserve it too. In my opinion a true friendship is one where we support one another through good, not so good and awful times. This world can be a very selfish place so when we can connect like that it brings meaning and joy. I have two friends who are really good like that and we’ve been friends for decades. I genuinely love them and at a drop of a hat I’d support them if they needed me.

How are you today after the work week? Are you relaxing with fur babies? I recall you started seeing a new therapist have you seen them for a second time yet? If so, how did it go?

I’ve been dealing with gas leaks in new place. I actually got really sick as I didn’t realise it was leaking and had to get medical treatment yesterday hence not being online. I then contacted real estate to ask for the gas and electricity safety check. The gas safety check said the hot water service was a danger to life and property. It needed urgent decommissioning and a new unit put outside. The hot water service was installed inside in the 1960’s. The gas safety check was dated 2021 as the owner had failed to do them every 2 years as required by Victoria’s rental laws. The life threatening unit is still in operation.

The owner / real estate haven't done an electricity safety check. If the hot water unit isn't replaced by Friday I’ll have no choice but to report it to VCAT and book alternative accomodation until they make the property safe. Im honestly not asking for much just a safe rental with the basic amenities. I’ve turned the gas off. There has been no ability to shower here either since I moved in. There’s 8 urgent repairs and 15 non urgent repairs. Considering my rubbish mental health it’s been a huge challenge addressing this. In my last rental I had zero issues. Thwt suite the saga.

I had my intake today for the Adult Prevention and Recovery Centre (APARC). I’ll be staying there for two weeks to help me avoid psychiatric ward hospitalisation. The intake went really well and there’s about a two week waiting period.

What are you planning to do on your free days?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thanks @Cuddlebear 😊. We definitely have similar ideas on true friendships. 🥰

Second appt with counsellor is booked for next week Tuesday. I had been doing mostly OK the past month until last weekend so I hadn't felt the need to make them too close together. Having a quieter weekend this week should help (now all my property and job interview things are dealt with).

Not sure when I will hear re: job interview outcome. It really depends on the business area and how quick they get panel review and approvals done - and if you are unsuccessful you won't hear until a successful candidate accepts the position (as they will offer down the list in preference order). I had an interview about 3 weeks ago now, which I can only assume I haven't been selected for. But in both cases I should hear something eventually, and get the opportunity to request constructive feedback if I want.

I am horrified (for you) to hear about the gas leak and the dangerous hot water system! Absolutely no excuse from the landlord for that, and honestly I am appalled that the rental agents even permit listing a property that is in violation of requirements (getting the assessment *and* getting the remedies to the problems!). I would certainly be so angry if I was in your situation (not that anger helps, but it is a valid emotion).

I don't think you should feel any guilt if you report it to VCAT. You are also giving them a chance to fix it first, which is very kind of you given how many years they have know it is a problem for. Very smart of you to know to ask for the gas safety check report - I would not have know of this, as my apartment didn't have gas. I am so scared of gas because of the potential hazard of a gas leak - where I am now has gas, and we had to get a leak fixed earlier in the year - thankfully it was outside and we noticed the smell.

Are you feeling fully better from the effects of the gas now?

I am glad to hear you had the APARC intake today and that it went well. ☺️ I read on another thread that it smelt like nice food or something? 😁

Hopefully the stay there will also feel like a bit of a holiday hotel break from the current new place and also maybe during that time the landlord will get all the urgent repairs done!! My fingers and toes are all crossed for you. 🤞

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hello @AlwaysMyself,

Feeling warn out and in pain are perfectly valid reasons for finding yourself in a not-so-good headspace. I find that's when my thoughts can be harder to manage as well. How are your energy and pain levels feeling today?

I am sorry to hear the person at the drop-in centre wasn't able to support you in the ways that you needed. Reaching out is always so vulnerable, so to be met with someone that can't quite soothe that part of you is really tough. I am so glad to know a friend showed up for you. You're always there for others here, so know that you deserve someone who is willing to shake up their plans a bit to be there when you need support.

I can hear your discomfort around reaching out... what if you started by checking in to see if people have the space to listen (to alleviate the worry that you may be encroaching on their decompression time) and explore general connection more often (which may help with the frequency of these thoughts) - what are your feelings about this as an idea?

I am sure the counsellor will be able to collaborate on different ways to approach all of this as well. And until then, we are all here for you - remember that. 🥰

PS: Good on you for showing up to the interview and giving it all you could after the weekend you had. You should be really proud of your efforts. 💛

Oh my goodness @Cuddlebear - I literally gasped reading this.

Are you okay?! I would have been mortified learning this information - you're truly handling this so well.

I am glad you got medical attention; how are you feeling now?

You absolutely aren't asking for too much, they have to do something about this, because it's evidently a very serious health risk.

I am sure this is the last thing you needed on top of everything else you have been managing... I am so sorry to hear this is happening. You're an absolute trooper.

It must be relieving to know you have some intensive support coming up. How are you feeling about it? It sounds really promising and supportive? 💛
