Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

A very early morning post to you @AlwaysMyself, I just wanted to say I am thinking of you. Today (and yesterday) I was just thinking, I just wish I could email @AlwaysMyself off the forum and just let her know all that is going on either that or a chat at a cafe over coffee just us hehe, what a good thought right. I have not forgotten to respond to you’re post, things have been a bit interesting my end so just haven’t had the capacity yet to (in a good way for you ☺️) meaning I like to really think and respond well and think through things (brain left me so haven’t been able to do in-depth stuff which really does annoy me sometimes- so waiting for my brain to get back online sorry for delay 💛), I love our chats.
I’ve flipped out of my normal pattern of sleep so gave up trying and thought that you were in my thoughts and so wanted to drop you a post since we haven’t touched based for awhile but we have being seeing each other busy on the forum helping others 🫶💛.
Take care, hope you are traveling alright and if not I’m a tag away even if it still takes me a bit but perhaps if you ever up for a mix of in-depth and lighter convos as-well that could work re quicker reply times my end but I know how busy you are so that may not work for you which is totally fine 😊. Talk soon whenever you’re on and have the time of course 🫶

@Flutterbug9

"Not responding to your wave, as you highlighted, could have been for xx reasons that by now I can’t remember. Don’t feel I should be made feel guilty for that. Doesn’t align with guidelines asking why I didn’t respond. Saddens me reading how you are feeling regarding this."

Oh, sorry, I think you've misunderstood my post - which is OK, just going to clarify to help. 😊

You asked me why I tagged you. I was only explaining why 😊. I wasnt at all upset that you didnt reply to it! I would not have mentioned it at all except that you explicitly mentioned it. 🥰

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Oops, sorry for the acronyms @Flutterbug9 - i forget sometimes.

DnD is "Dungeons and Dragons" which is a Role Play Game, but not a massive-online role-play video/computer game (or, not in *my* case. It can be done that way though in some modified forms).

DM is the "dungeon master". They lead the story and play the monsters and other non-player characters. 😊. As characters we make decisions on what *our own* character does (and roll dice to see how successful or not our actions may have been), which the DM then interprets and responds to from the story and their controled characters/monsters.

Some games use the term "GM" as "game master". But in DnD its called a "Dungeon" Master (DM) for theming I guess.

In Call of Cthulu i recrntly learnt they use a different term. I think Lore Keeper or something like that?? I have forgotten the exact term. But it has the same same role in the game. 😊

(I'm doing short posts because I'm on my phone and very limited and broken up time - I have to go take my medications now)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 re: eyesight, driving

I can empathise with the preference to not drive and feeling scared in the dark. 💜 i think that is a very rational reaction - because when it is harder to see there are more risks for a person because of not being able to as easily or quickly (or early) respond to the things not seen.

I am very short-sighted but use glasses to correct my vision. Although glasses are not the same - it still is a strain at times to see things clearly, hard to see at night and/or in the rain, and as you also noted hard when there are headlights (and also for me the patches of no street lights contrasted with patches of having street lights - transitioning between the two takes a lot).

I also have astigmatism in my eyes which warps the angle of light refracting on my eye lens. But glasses don't really treat this to my knowledge. It makes things more blurry.

And then my chronic fatigue also impacts my eye muscles' ability to contract/relax to focus. So if i am very fatigued things are more blurry or strained because my eye muscles cant hold the right taughtness to focus on the right distance.

But I can still see enough for daily life activities, it just wears me out more when i have to strain to focus visually. And often i can't read menus on a wall or cards at a distance until they're a decent size font (or have a picture/symbol instead which words for Playing Card suits).

Its part of why when im quite tired i can't do activities that require sight - e.g. forum, craft/painting, watching tv, etc.

But i also have auditory processing challe ges which worsen with fatigue too 😅 so audiobooks can then be a struggle also. And sensory overwhelm with noise at times means that even music can be irritating if i am dysregulated lol. It puts me in quite a conundrum when i am fatigued *and* mentally upset - because my distractions exacerbate rather than regulate/soothe.

But I am always grateful that i do have eyesight for daily independence. And i think of my friends who don't have full independence in travelling places or doing new activities because of their eyesight. That would be so much harder.

@MissGremlin sorry i'm so far behind in replies! Just reading your message re: service letter.

Will keep an eye out for your update as i read through my backlog. 😊 i have over 120 unread tagged posts 😅. And i cant currently login on my laptop (only my phone which has the cache saved as logged in). I've submitted a tech feedback about it 😊.

But i also dont have much free-time currently, so im very adhoc on when i can read and reply to posts.

But i am absolutely interested and want to know. 🥰

Im glad Thursday night Mex Trains has been going well with getting to know the smaller group 😊 @Flutterbug9 .

Sorry to hear the physical pain is flared up lately; i hope it settles down if possible. I dont know much about chillblanes other than having heard the word before.

I love that the pack-list for the hospital includes a teddy bear as an idea 😍, along with pillow and blanket. Familiar home comforts are great for me.

Not long now until your next infusion I'm thinking? (1.5-6 weeks I'm thinking due to May timeframe).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself i get so excited when I see your name pop up ☺️. I know how hard it is for you to get on at the moment and how much of a backlog of notifications you have. So there's never any pressure to reply if you can't.

I haven't shared any further update as there's been no more contact from them since that. But they asked me to fill in the form to allow information to be released and provide ID which I've done both. Initially the phone call sounded so promising which is why I was keen to share about it but it's been another let down really.

Sending love and hugs as always sweet ❤️.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Sorry for such a long delay in reply from me @Cuddlebear . I'm currently very limited in time that i can get in the forum, and in my "free time" i'm sometimes not doing well and trying to use my current supports to help me process things instead of just seeking distraction all the time (since i'm currently somewhere where supports are available, but its temporary).

I too often forget things in posts! Hence i often have to reply to each post separately and immediately-after-reading when I am not on my laptop. On my laptop i can use multiple tabs to flick through between posts/pages and one for my reply to type. Its very OK with me if you forget things or dont repky about a question. 🥰🤗

I'm sorry things have continued to be so hard and the support gaps continue.

I wonder whether the lack of supports (the gaps) is a trugger for you, with anxiety and/or depression?

I know for me it is 😓😥, which means when i am already having difficulty with regulating my emotions and i finally reach out for support - when the support is delayed or unavailable it escalates things 😬.

I'm wondering whether or not that resonates at all with what happens for you? 🤔 (its ok either way - there is no right or wrong, other than "what is true for you").

For me, realising this was what was happening was helpful, as now i can better manage at what time i reach out (earlier!) And also who i do or do not "risk" reaching out to - and i can sometimes pre-plan who is available if i need someone to talk to.

I will happily keep tagging you, and appologise in advance when i forget to. I wasnt sure earlier this morning whether to tag you in my post here about eyesight. I wssnt sure if it would make you feel sad because of your own situation, or whether it would help you feel seen/heard around the fact that whilst I have not-great eyesight that i also acknowledge how much more impactful challenges other people with poorer eyesight have, and my empathy, care and consideration for them. You are one of my "friends" I refer to. But i didnt want to tag you in case it would be triggering at all for you. 🤗.

@Cuddlebear @Flutterbug9 @Chasingsunsets @Jynx

I see the clinical-trial pdoc this week for another "what to expect and planning" session, and then next week ( 😮 ) i have my first dosage session.

I guess i should appologise and warn in advance if i say anything late next week that might sound a little odd or "extra confusing" - please know it may just be the medication and I am OK 🤣. The point of the treatment is to alter how your brain thoughts happen, to "awaken" new parts.

But of course if i notice my thoughts are a bit wild, i will refrain from the forum - don't worry @Jynx ! 🤣 unless its just a funny thought or feels helpfully profound, then i would probably still share it.

Feel free to laugh at anything silly i say though. I dont get upset by people laughing at/with me good-naturedly. It actually helps me, i think.

@Cuddlebear @Jynx @Flutterbug9

The game session the other week... was hard. I mean, we had some fun and the story was good. But my concerns with the food is exactly what eventuated 😕. However when we set the time for our next meet and someone suggested doing it over mealtime again I did then let them know the reason i had requested an earlier start at the start of this year was *because of* the mealtime (even though the excuse i gave at the time was because of people getting tired early and not able to focus - which was also a problem affecting 3/4 of the group, so it was also a true and observable reason which is why we did move it earlier in the day). So they did agree to not make it over lunchtime regularly - and i sugfested they could always opt to meet early for lunch or stay late for dinner if they wanted to and I wouldnt have to. (Or they could meet at other occasions over food too without me.)

I'm glad i was able to say that, as normally i would have said nothing and they would not have known it causes me stress. But they also want to accommodate to make things less stressful, so it allows us to then discuss how they can still have social meals but i can still also join the game (and *optional* if i feel up for a meal or not).

But being able to "blame" (explain) my food stress on the autism is helpful in both framing it for ithers and validating it as "ok" for me to feel that way. I was always raised being told i was a picky eater and forced (stressful!) to eat things anyway - rather than acceptance and working out how to find palatable nutritional foods that *work for me* not against me.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Acronyms are 100% ok. I find it best practice is to ask as compared to guessing

thanks for update on progress of the trial. I’ve been wondering when the first day of you receiving the med/s is.

If I get the green light from my cardiologist, 5 weeks today will be my first day in hospital on infusion. Feels like meds etc are working, review appt is late next week so won’t know until then. Weather conditions better here today that have been for few days, pain levels have decreased to degree is being easier to push through pain whilst getting things done.

Sending my a wave and words about not responding were on different threads on different days. No benefit, for either of us, delving back into past posts on the forums. Different dates, different threads ……all too easy for confusion to happen. More important things to deal with and focus on. I have been lucky to be able to chat with tyme about things that were weighing heavy on me plus things I couldn’t talk about on the forums. As I mentioned to tyme, I had reached a point I felt I had no one I could talk to about certain things.

im looking forward to hearing (whatever you are allowed to share) about how things are going with the trial, anything you notice about yourself etc, whenever your next post comes through, know that could be xx weeks from now. If all goes well in next couple weeks plus with the infusion, my time on the forums may become less than currently is as my ability and focus moves. Due to mix of various things, will chats on a different thread like we used to have happen again, I honestly don’t know

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely Iys so good to hear from you. How are you?

the lack of support and gaps is having an impact. It’s something I really need but can’t access and it leaves me alone with no one to help. I find good support does help a lot. It keeps me more steady and I feel I have people who can support me when I’m this unwell. When the support is unavailable or delayed I can’t improve. I’m really stuck.

I recognise it the thing is there is nothing available. I’ve tried very hard to access support and there isn’t anything so far that can take me. The wrllbeing local I went back and waiting now 3 weeks to find out if I can get any help.

Yes tag me lovely. @Flutterbug9 I love your tags too if you want to tag.

im glad you start the medical part of the trial and anything you share will be very welcomed no matter what you say. How do you feel now you’re getting so close to the actual trial?

Im proud of you of being able to express your concerns re the game time and food. I’m so relieved they were open to your suggestion and feelings too. This gives you options and you can enjoy the game but not have to worry about the food part.

I realise you’ve been going through a lot and appreciate the time you’ve taken to respond.

@Flutterbug9 How are you?
