Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I love @Appleblossom practical advice. Its what I do when im not coping - just the real basics of eating and toileting. ❤️‍🩹

@Cuddlebear I dont know if you are rural or urban. But im wondering if there are any community orgs that could help you in the short term with setting up the house? E.g. Lions Club

It sounds like a real gap in the supports for people that there is no extra assistance during these types of times. ❤️‍🩹

If I was minister for health or disability or such things, I'd advocate for "relocation supports" as an adhoc need-based program. ❤️‍🩹 i really wish I could help you, but im here listening to you, learning from you, and caring about you.

@Appleblossom Hello lovely how are you? Thank you for the help and advice. I have figured out main things as this place is really small so I taught myself yesterday. There’s a lot of unpacked stuff but I’m doing the best I can. Hot water doesn’t work so I can’t shower. I’m just feeling really down and alone. No support on weekends so it’s going to be tough.

@AlwaysMyself How are you lovely? Really good to hear you got keys in to real estate and a listing is up. That must be a huge relief for you.

Yes there’s a big gap and not much help around where I am. No one does this sort of help. I wish you were the Minister lol. There’s a lot of gaps and it makes it hard for people.

Do you have anything on this weekend? I’m home alone.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear no hot water??? 😮 pretty sure that is a core requirement to be allowed to rent a place, and should be able to be actioned by the real estate agent as an Urgent action. I hope you have let the agent/landlord contact know?

Grr it makes me sad that someone who rent a place out that is not fit for living in.

Im sorry to hear there is no local services you can seek extra adhoc support for. ☹️

Sadly I do not have the ego to be a politician! 😆

I think i would struggle with frustration and irritation from people who act based on their ego and desire for power!

I can cope if people have different perspectives and can discuss those in a rational way. I dont mind diversity of opinion. But people doing things only for self-interest or to cover their own mistakes (rather than admit, apologise, learn from, and move on) annoys me a lot.

I am hoping to stay home today. Been so busy I am so tired. But I also dont have anything I want to do at home to relax that interests me. I could maybe get out a paint-by-number, but im not sure ai have unpacked that box yet from moving myself 4 months ago. ☹️ and if I was to try to paint with the TV on in the background I think my mum's dog would try to sit on my lap still and get in the way. :face_with_rolling_eyes: I sort of just want to curl up in bed and sleep it all away until I no longer feel fatigued.

I should probably do some more dot-point thinking/planning for my job interview presentation on Monday. But im tired enough that I feel more like I dont care and it would be easier to just not do it, so I can find a middle ground where I do a little prep for the interview but dont do too much to overwhelm me into negative thinking. I dont mind if I dont get offered the job, but it would be interesting one so its worth trying out. But if offered, I dont even know if I would accept it or stay with the job I currently have!

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Oooh you have a job interview. I didn’t realise that was the case. Is it for a position at your current employers? What attracted you to this new role? When I’m feeling fatigued and need to do some preparation I try to break it down to smaller bits and do the basic that’s required rather than going full hog but not doing a good job of it. You could just start a new document on your phone, tablet or computer and just write a sentence of the prep you’ve got in your head to start off with?

It sounds like you’ve had a very busy week and it’s ok to have some rest time.

Im much the same I’m good with different opinions too but could never be a politician. They are not the type of people I admire that’s for sure.

I can totally understand why some boxes are not yet unpacked. It’s such a big job and you’re working on top of that as well. Is there much space at your mums? Sounds like your mums doggie really loves you lol wanting to involve themselves with the craft you do by sitting on your lap.

Yes I’ve let the real estate know re hot water. No response yet.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Find crossed the agent comes through soon. 🤞 @Cuddlebear

A lot more space at my mum's than I had at my apartment. Things were quite jam packed at the apartment 😆. I have a bedroom, bathroom, study/office, and crafty/other room here, plus a larger loungroom. I will have enough space to store everything (and I also sorted a lot of things to sell or give away during the packing process) here, just a matter of working out where makes sense to put everything so that it is accessible and things are out of the sun/heat if they need to be. It is physically tiring too and I have chronic fatigue and back, knee, and wrist pains.

The job would be researching, developing, codesigning and implementing changes to make the local government service centre more accessible and inclusive to all people, but especially to cultural, linguistic, disability, age, and vulnerability diverse peoples. You can probably guess/imagine why i find that interesting and worthwhile work ☺️. I'm glad theyre doing it - regardless of who gets the role!

Its still within the local government, which I already work for. Its at-level (not a financial promotion) but would be excellent experience in larger project management than I have done to date, and would be working with communities directly which I would enjoy but dont have formal experience with. Ive worked reception / office management roles before as well as my volunteer work with youth, and my deaf community social network, so im not unfamiliar with accessibility considerations for different populations and learning from them about their challenges. But not having direct employment specifically in the area will be a disadvantage for me. However I got an interview which is a great honour either way!

I have to present/discuss how I would go about the project at the interview. I've done an overview PowerPoint slides for the general framework/process, which i can use to support deeper converstion on what I would do any why, and what might influence why/how I do things based on responses I get and what I learn. But thats where I think some dot point would be good to have on hand during that conversation so I have a little structure of the key points I would like to make and dont want to forget. ☺️

Its just an emotional barrier to it from feeling tired, rather than any inability to do it or anxiety about it. I am very very very fortunate and grateful that I do not have anxiety. Like less than a healthy average person does!! I did have panic attacks at the end of last year (thanks TMS treatment gone wrong) and gosh that was horrible; but now I have experienced it myself I understand so much more about how it actually feels gor others when there may not even been thoughts attached to the dread and panic feelings.

I bought myself an eBook-cross-notebook not long ago, which i find good for taking in my handbag and being able to jot down ideas and thoughts while at a cafe or out somewhere, which helps when I feel unmotivated to get out of the house. (I wish this was an easier option for you, and I dont want to "rub it in" that its an option for me, so I want to acknowledge that I am fortunate for this and dont take it for granted. I feel your life is waayy tougher than mine, and having that perspective is a healthy reminder for me.)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hi @Cuddlebear,

I completely get this feeling and how overwhelming it can be to have a huge amount of change occur and still need to work through big practical tasks, like unpacking. You're left not only having to manage the emotional challenges, but also the physical and mental - it truly is so much. So please know that how you've been feeling is understandable.

I am so glad to see the community supporting you and I am sorry to hear that you're not getting as much support as you need in-person so that things feel more accessible. That's really hard... what is helping with a sense of safety today? 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear it makes sense you would have figured out all the essentials. I am sorry the real estate agent didn’t organise the hot water, as @AlwaysMyself suggested was the norm, but not surprised they are unresponsive. I do hope they get back to you soon.

It’s great watching you two talk.

I hope tomorrow goes reasonably….

I had a good day. A surprise visitor and a rehearsal with a big drive.

take care both of you

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hello my fellows, putting a short update here that I didn't want to mention in social chats. @tyme @Cuddlebear @Appleblossom @rav3n @AuntGlow .

I didn't have a good head-space day yesterday, and whilst today was a bit easier it's still not been pleasant. Nothing 'triggering' my thoughts, I think the difference has just been that whilst I can usually push the thoughts aside and focus on something else I was 1) too worn out to do anything and b) in constant aching pain so I don't cope emotionally as well (I do not like taking painkillers, but I'm thinking I may do tonight/tomorrow because its been almost 5 days, albeit from 2 different sources).

But I was able to see that my thought were coming strong and recurrent, and decided to try out a drop-in centre for people who are in distress or having SH/SI thoughts - and to do so before it became too distressing & unable to drive myself there. I think it was a good thing for me to do, but the support person there was not helpful - in some ways sometimes made me feel worse when I felt they weren't understanding what I was saying, or unable to adapt their responses to my context. But I know they were trying their best and that my condition/thinking is atypical, and I try to focus on their well-intentness. After still feeling just as dark I decided to call a friend to meet me there to spend some time with me to distract me. That was a good decision, even though I really don't like interrupting someone else's day/plans. I was able to spend a few hours with them, fitting in with their existing planned outing, and that helped very much as both a distraction and socially feeling cared about.

But I still feel that I don't want to have to ask friends to spend time with me when I'm not coping, in part because I know their are introverted people who need a lot of self-time to decompress (plus family obligations). I feel or am concerned that if I contact someone they will feel obligated to help/meet, even if they don't really want to or are busy.

And I also do not want ever to teach my brain that I can get care by letting people know I'm having difficult thoughts. Because I have them too often. And I am used to coping with them by myself and keeping myself safe, but at the same time doing that also makes the pain of loneliness and feeling unsupported worse.

I don't really know what is a middle-ground between this; where I do not reach out to friends often about how I am feeling, but that I am also not alone in my thoughts (and crisis lines have not helped in the past). But it needs to be interactive enough that I am distracted because I am someone whose brain is always thinking in the background.

I suppose it gives something to discuss with the new counsellor when I see her again in a few weeks (I think she is on leave, so I can't ask for a sooner appointment). 😅 I did pre-warn her before booking with her that my main problem is chronic SI that I'm seeking help for.

On the positive side, I was finally able to finish doing some prep this evening for the interview I have tomorrow. The more tired I am the less interested I am in the idea of changing jobs even if I am offered it. But I am just keeping all doors open at the moment; I'd likely regret it later if I didn't at least try.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hmmm…. Suicidality shouldn’t be treated as one size fits all. I am glad you focused on her good intentions…I have had such poor responses from call centres, I will not call again.

I am glad you developing a relationship with your private therapist. @AlwaysMyself tbh I have not been able to share much about my SI with anyone, friend, family or professional. I have had a few moments with support workers, but if they are any good, mostly I want to protect them from the possibility… One lady did directly ask, after I had worked with her for 6 months. I really appreciated her discretion and directness. Her organisation rolled me over onto NDIS.

I understand about the job and setting goals. GOOD LUCK!
