Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Related to my previous posts (not forum-related).

On phone so i cant add trigger warnings - but please be warned it may be and stop reading if SI or SH feelings trigger you.

I just need to vent it, to "be heard". I know there is no solution. I am safe by way of keeping my promises.

‐-‐-----‐-----------

Dont have people to talk to in realtime. Dont have the support I need; it doesnt exist even if I pay for it. Tried the phone line the ED told me to call "next time" i was in distress and they just told me they cant help talk to me either -- has made things worse.

I literally called them and told them that not having a solution to my distress support need is causing me to want to die and that it also triggers off intense SH urges, but since i have self-control and dont act on them that there is nothing ED can do for me. I told them waiting for 30-60min on a crisis line makes it worse. I told them that crisis lines are not trained for "im distressed because i am not going to suicide", and that theyre only trained for talking people down from crisis that can be logically solved. They tried to problem solve and then of course foudn that there isnt a solution to my problem - which makes it worse for me (frustration), and then say they have to go (its been 30min and i asusme there is another call; i get it).

And now i am worse than when i called. At least before i called i was only feeling despair. Now i am despair and frustrated that i did what i was told to do and the same thing that i predicted would happen did happen ("we cant help you either").

I have no options. There is no compassionate solution for everyone involved.

@AlwaysMyself i hear you on this sweet and it's the situation I find myself in when I call crisis lines cos there's no solution.

I'm here and if I can help at all please let me know, you're not alone sweetheart ❤️

Really feeling the frustration in your post @AlwaysMyself and it's a frustration that many share - whichever side of the coin you're on (i.e. those accessing the system and those working within it). You and @MissGremlin are hitting a service-gap that impacts so many. I think also, the kinds of services that are set up to provide the kind of non-crisis-but-very-not-okay-support you may be needing right now are often only available during business hours, which is a very small window compared to when these kinds of feelings tend to hit us.

Before I get lost in a rant about this, I will instead ask you - what support can the forums community provide for you right now? We are here for you hun 💜

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you @MissGremlin , acknowledgement helps. I am not surprised you have also experienced this 😥 even though it breaks my heart for you (and others too) that it also happens to them 😭. I feel that i'd prefer it to happen to me than others, since I dont even *want* to live in the first place. Other people *want* to live and seek supports and find there are none -- that is so much more devestating.

For some reason the system seems to think that if i ever make a decision (no immediate threat - let me be clear!!) to harm myself that for some reason i would reach out for help or go to ED. I don't think they quite understand that when someone who thinks like I do makes a decision, they don't need/want a failed service to step in. Its too late then.

I can only assume its because they *have* to say it. Because how can they not understand that it will not occur *due to* the lack of support when trying to find a solution?

@Jynx talking it out and having it acknowledged helps. And making me laugh is always helpful.

Thats the only non-harmful thing thats ever helped.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself I'm the same sweet in that I often tell them that I'm going to go cos others deserve support and I don't, that I'm not worthy of it. So I get it sweet, i truly do. It breaks my heart to know you feel the same way 😞.

Oh that hits me so hard cos its exactly my thoughts/feelings. That when the mind is made up calling for/reaching out for support is not an option cos we don't want that (I'm safe).

I really wish sometimes that there wasn't the whole anonymity thing here. But I'm here, I hear every word you are saying and I understand how you feel.

Sending you the biggest hugs possible sweet ❤️

I got heaps of memes @AlwaysMyself always happy to share some 😋

I'm getting that fun ADHD vibe of trying to think of a funny story and suddenly forgetting every funny thing that has ever happened to me! 🙃

But if I think of one I'll be sure to share!

Sending hugs if you want them 💜

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

That in itself makes me smile/laugh @Jynx because the brain-freeze on the spot is so relatable. I had trouble with my language course assessment because of it 2 months ago.

@MissGremlin *hugs*

You do deserve it. You are just as worthy as anyone else.

I dont struggle with not feeling worthy, if i wanted to live then it would make sense for me to be as prioritised as others in my same situation (self-control but distressed). But logically... why make someone live if they *dont want to* and you cant provide the support they need? I dont get it. 🤷‍♀️

(Not sure if im allowed to say that? But it provides the opportunity for others to challenge my perspective on it, and that can be a healthy thing.)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself thankyou sweet ❤️.

My thinking is very much like yours though in that I don't *want* to live (I'm safe) the only reason I am at the moment is for the sake of others but not for myself. But living for others is getting harder as the longer things are like this for me the more I see that I'm only a burden on others.

Not sure I'm one to challenge that perspective cos I could go on about the reasons to live but yet I don't feel them myself.

Thank you @MissGremlin and @Jynx for sitting with me in this.

I am trying to lower my blood pressure. I just measured it and its in HT Urgency (stage 3, over 180/120 on both number) which is what i try to prevent happening.

I have music playing to help me "feel it out". I've tried writing it down to give to the psychiatrist on Wednesday.

Im not angry anymore. Im not even got tears.

I do have my chronic spine pain and stress-exacerbated reflux pain and a headache (which is BP related i believe).

I have a stress toy im pulling at.

I "feel calm" but despair. And still my BP is so high.
