Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@AlwaysMyself happy to be here with you sweet.

I know how tough it is to sit through these intense moments, but we are here with you every step of the way.

I'm glad you have music on and writing it down is good. That stress toy must be getting a workout, I know mine do 😂.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself it's hard for me to distil my thoughts on this down to something tangible... there's obviously lots of nuance, factors, etc... A whole paragraph, even an essay could be dedicated to the nature of modern capitalist society and how mental health continues to go under-funded and under-prioritised. On a values-level, I think for me it boils down to the fact that the end of life is the end of possibility. Yes, it is the end of suffering, but also the end of any hope that the suffering could end - and not only that, but that those hard-won lessons of hope, fighting, and healing, could then not be passed on to someone who is still suffering.

I can imagine that for someone who has carried these thoughts and feelings as long as you have, that may feel like a cop out, or false hope, or even a delusion. And that is so fine for you to feel that way - I wouldn't judge you for it. Just sharing that something that has been incredible for me in my own journey is that now, I get to be the person I needed when I was younger, and I get to be that small flame of hope for other people who so frequently remind me of that younger, suffering self.

Anyway, memes 😝
(You may also enjoy these @MissGremlin 😉)

@AlwaysMyself oh I love nee doh ones. I have the ice cube ones, not for use when too stressed though 😂. I have a spiky fidget thing that I squeeze and also a mini koosh ball thing that i pull at the bits of rubber.

@Jynx 🤣 yep those memes are relatable. Im old enough to remember dial-up. Although i was lucky as my parent worked it internet tech so we had Broadband (not dial up) since 2001, so there are only a few memories. Mostly the slow speeds and the sounds 😆.

@MissGremlin do yoy recall the days of dial-up too?

The last meme.. the cup... its accurate... except i dont relise i need to loo until even later 🤣🤣. But yep! Its one of the "symptoms" of AuDHD that i never realised until this year was a symptom lol.

I love the point made about "executive functioning". We used to always say "Give me the executive version" which meant "dumb it down". So really, we're all over-qualified to be Executives now I think if we are now having Executive Functioning like them? 😅🤣

Actually i managed to have a shower today! Because i was distressed i hoped it might be a physical circuitbreaker. Its easier to have a shower (override the autism barriers) when my adhd symptoms are heightened 😅 such as energy-frustraited/angry.

Unfortunaltly the shower didnt help the mood. But it will help my rash not return as quickly.

Yeah my brain is more f'd that i let on 🤣

@AlwaysMyself haha oh I do remember dial up and the frustration if you wanted to make a phone call but couldn't cos someone was using the internet! 😂.

I'm great at knowing when I need to pee but then getting distracted and remembering hours later then still not going cos I get busy doing something else 😂.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I lioe the big square cubes @MissGremlin 🥰. My friends have a few for ADHD fidget purposes, and also when i had my AuDHD assessment they had one which i realised i was pulling at a lot during the assessment - which is what clued me into keeping my snail on hand to pull at when trying to regulate 😅.

The snails eyes are the most precarious part lol. They will tear off soon i think, so i try not to pull them anymore.

I saw Cap mention minibricks just now and I remember i have 2 or 3 packets (ok, they were my ex's and he left them behind. Theyre mine unless he asks for them now lol).

Maybe i will see if i can do that - its low-brain-power.

My dogs will be home soon (within 30min). So that will either be a good distraction or increased stress. No idea lol. Depends on how they behave.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Jynx yes your perspective makes sense and was my perspective the past 20 years also. Its why MH/peer helping is so important to me and why i have done volunteer youth mentoring the past 3 years. The problem has become the pain outweighs, and after over 20 years I cannot any longer believe there is a *high likelihood* of repreive. The reason I'm off work since christmas is to give myself the best chance to be able to find/experience a life worth living - a neutral or positive one. Something i am prepared to endure for the sake of others. But this is only possible if my own needs can be met to decrease stress/distress when i need adhoc support.

Im the opposite of most crisis people i think?

I have the skills from CBT and DBT, and i have the insight to problem-solve. But when these are not enough (makes sense with AuDHD dysregulation why its been so hard despite doing the skills), ... *shrug* . The expectation is to be able to self-manage. Thats why i never reached out for help to crisis services until 6 months ago (except maybe a phone line max 5 times in my life?). But i've been told its good/ok/better to reach out in distress (esp with the BP levels i learned about in January). But it isnt better.

Hello lovely how are you? I’m struggling to keep up with posts. Please do not think I don’t care. I do.

I’ve hit rock bottom. I’m struggling to get any supports and everyday I’m just trying to survive second by second. I have no more capacity to keep reaching out to services and crisis phone lines that can’t help me.

I saw neuro doctor who’s found some permanent brain damage and is doing further testing. It’s totally broken me.

I want to be engaged here but doing so has been so hard. I don’t want to be here just seeking support I want to give back to people too. I think the changes on the forums have also affected me and recovery club has not put in the daily webinars which I relied on so much. I’m shattered.

Please let me know how you all are. I know each of you is also going through a lot.

Oh sweet @Cuddlebear you are going through a real trial at the moment hey.

I think the forums fam knows you well enough now to know that if you had capacity to be giving support, you would be. The bonus of this being such a large community is that no one person needs to be responsible for keeping others afloat. We all pitch in when we can - and since one cannot pour from an empty cup, there's never going to be an expectation that you can only seek support if you are also providing it.

If being here is helpful, then be here as much as you need hun.

Sending you sooo many hugs, the warm and squishy kind!
