Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

Hey @Flutterbug9 ,

If I do a one-big-post reply, it will mean a lot longer between being able to answer because there is very limited times of late when I have enough time to read, digest & respond at length. But I am happy to do whichever suits you best as long as I know which of the options you prefer - knowing that longer posts = more delayed time to respond.

@Flutterbug9 wrote:

Brief question @AlwaysMyself

when I post things to you, would you prefer I post on here only from now on?

Having read where you have mentioned your memory challenges, I’m wondering if that might (maybe) help with somethings. My thoughts including things of one less thread, easier to follow posts (possibly), easier to remember to tag me (so I get email notification for every relevant post)

Good question! I can be flexible to either, but my preference is actually to keep them separate so that you still have a space for in-depth chat since we chat often. I don’t need to use my memory as long as I am tagged - because I keep all the email tag notifications until I have read them 😉. It’s my digitial-memory for me lol.

I think because of how my brain “categorises” sometimes, I think is probably why I am less likely to share my updates on your thread unless explicitly asked, because it’s a thread for you. (Of course I am happy for anyone to share here - I welcome it to be a safe space for anyone. And I realise this is contradictory, but there is a lot of complex reasons for this — it makes sense when taking into account things I won’t go into. But know that I genuinely don’t mind people sharing here, and I would say so if I did. 😊)

And also a second reason I’m aware of is because I think I would get too many posts here and then loose posts and replies among it all and feel overwhelmed by 20 pages of reading per week lol 😂.

@Flutterbug9 wrote:

one favour. If, like recently, you know you will snowed under with lots of known appointments etc for 2 wks, 4 wks (as examples) can you give me that timeline.

Very reasonable request, and 100% OK that you have asked 😊. However I am not sure I can (reliably) do this - or at least not currently. It’s probably best to assume I won’t have capacity to reply, and be pleasantly surprised when I can?

I currently have no predictability of my capacity day-to-day, so even when I expect I might be able to spend hours catching up (like today), I may end up with zero capacity to do so (like today, until 10pm when I really should have been going to sleep but I wanted to “get through” a few email tags instead). I am currently trying to shed as much stress off my life as I can because I am not coping, and it may get to a point where I am unable to come on the forums for “proper chats” either.

Unfortunately there are no suitable (and reliable) supports for me to help me cope when I am overwhelmed, and this has been harder to self-regulate when triggered-dysregulation since coming off my medication. And sadly when I say “none” this is not just me saying it, it is the MH system and my GPs and the few ‘unreliable-access’ services also saying it is the unfortunate reality. 😞. All the talk about suicide prevention and getting help pre-crisis feels like a joke when faced with the conundrum I’m in. So the best I can do is to remove as many possible triggers in life as I can, but the problem is that my “must do” things are the triggering things most times - and there is no support person I can work/talk through the tasks with to help keep me “even keeled”.

@AlwaysMyself

1) post can be whenever best works for you

2) all I have ever asked is for open honest communication between us as much as possible

3) my “must do” things are leaving me mentally exhausted. Add to that being heavily impacted by rejection sensitive issues which is causing emotional distress, feelings of rejection from both perceived plus real sources

if helps to put things into writing (eg vent), you are welcome to use the thread I set up.

I will give you as much space as you need as of tonight

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself

very important questions - please reply when you can, even if just thumb up or down and question number

1) are you physically safe?

2) do you have concerns you may hurt yourself, or worse?

3) do you have accomodation?

4) if yes, is accomodation physically safe?
5) if yes, is accomodation mentally safe?

There is a post from me to you on thread I most recently set up.

My hopes that last couple weeks have been that post would have been in a much better circumstances. Things I was hoping we could have talked through and, maybe, moved on from. Am realising now that opportunity could quite possibly never happen. A post, in hope, to explain things about part of my brain processing and impact on my nervous system.

Trial start date, I’m hoping is soon and that you get benefits from you quickly. Hoping you can get back onto your meds sooner rather than later and that they help with whatever you are currently struggling with. (I can only say “whatever” as has been a period of time where posts have not mentioned any issues for you since starting to taper. Reading about MH struggles for last xx weeks has left me speechless and totally confused).

for practical -

Maybe delete all post notifications emails from me

I have remembered Tyme has subscribed to that thread I set up.

feel free to vent in that thread as much as you wish, I will not be using or accessing it again as of now (23 March)

unless anything comes up that you need to know due to flow through to you, I make all attempts to leave you to send a post to me. If you need me, you know where to find me

Hi @AlwaysMyself, have been thinking about you since your appointment.
From one of your last posts to @Flutterbug9 I just want to say I hear you and feel with you re the lack of support services I really get it, I really do. I recently found myself back in that space and it’s rather interesting and extremely mind boggling sorry can’t find a better word for it at the moment.

reading backwards through the posts and I see you got accepted into the trial, that’s awesome!
you do have a lot going on for you at the moment, how’s the “rest and digest going?” Calming that nervous system. I am pretty interested in the vagus nerve, once things calm down for you and we both have capacity perhaps we could have discussion around it, only if you want 😊.

Well done on getting through your assessment for ADHD/Autism, how is this sitting with you? Again I am mindful you have a lot on your plate and while it might not be best to discuss this now (as you have a lot on) I don’t want to ignore it either, it’s really massive and I want to acknowledge that 💜, there are so many mixed emotions here, relief, happiness, etc then also grief sadness etc. Just want to let you know I sit with you through this process like @Jynx and everyone else here.

It’s interesting your dog has been having some changes in behaviour, she’s noticing changes perhaps? What do you think about this? Is there anything she’s trying to tell you or let you know if though it’s a dysfunctional way of doing so? 💜🐶

ok I better hit the hay I know there was more I need to respond to but already an hour over my max time to be up. If you haven’t supported my msg but the time I get back, I’ll just edit this post and add it in take care my friend you got this 🙏☀️

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

@AlwaysMyself oh yay! Gratz on getting the diagnosis, I'm glad that it all went well! I hope the report does yield some useful strategies 😉

I wonder, do you subscribe to the 'social model of disability'? It basically posits that disabilities are caused by the way society is organised, as opposed to being implicit deficits or impairments. From Google: "It distinguishes between "impairment" (functional limitation) and "disability" (societal exclusion), focusing on removing environmental, attitudinal, and communication barriers to create equality, independence, and full participation."

I like thinking of my own psychosocial disabilities this way because it reminds me that my struggles are not a reflection of my worth, and that were society to be differently organised, I might be thriving... It also makes me think of what a GP once spoke to me about, in terms of the fact that in a hunter-gatherer society, my 'deficits' would be assets - easily distracted makes me perfect for being a lookout for danger or for spotting lunch... late night sleep cycle means I'd be happy to stay awake to keep the fire going, and stand guard... there's more but of course I can't think of them right now 😅

Fair enough that fully unmasking doesn't feel viable. I wonder, what about with your ND friends, or are they the ones who are quite busy?

I am so glad to have been there for this journey! I hope it leads to lighter and brighter things for you 😊💜

Sorry for interrupting

Saw your comment about feet and memory

I’ve walked on the outside of my feet for many, many years. My podiatrist believing it is linked to my cervical stenosis and disc degeneration. Your comment adds food for thought.

asking out of curiosity- do either of you find part way through verbally mentioning something your mind goes off on a tangent? Either that or we’re going to talk about more than one thing and, after talking about the first one, find you have no idea what the other item/s were.

Reading through your post @I’m wondering if this could be a 3 way chat which I could also be tagged into. Just a thought, will leave decision with you and

Of course @Flutterbug9 I will try to remember to tag you whenever I'm rambling about these topics!

Yes, my mind goes on tangents ALL the time! I'm like you @AlwaysMyself in that I will forget what question has been asked of me, and hope that the tale I was weaving was somehow relevant to it 😅

It's notable when speaking to NT folks, because a) they don't interrupt me (which is kind of a normal/accepted part of conversation with my ND friends) and b) they can get confused when I start going off on tangents, and also I end up trailing off a lot (because I'm used to my friends picking up the conversational thread).

I often start sentences with no idea where they're going, or how to finish them. I just have a vague concept of what I want to communicate and mostly manage to find the sentence on the way.

When it comes to wanting to talk on multiple topics, to prevent forgetting the second/third one, I have gotten into the habit of announcing them prior to launching into the first one. I've noticed that saying things aloud is immensely helpful for remembering them. Same goes for just general memory lapses - e.g. if I'm going into the shops only to get a few things, I can write them down yes, or I can announce them and make note of how many items it is. 'Bread, milks, eggs, cereal, okay four things' and I repeat them a couple times aloud before going into the sensory-overwhelm factory known as a supermarket. I will often have forgotten the 4th thing by the time I grab the first 3, but I know there's a 4th thing, so I start saying the list aloud again and it almost always comes back into my brain.

And yeah, totally valid to choose not to pursue diagnosis. Unless you want to get support or assistance (like NDIS), it is a huge financial barrier that may not end up providing you much beyond 'official' validation.

Just want to also send you some hugs dear @Cuddlebear because I can hear how rough things are for you and how difficult it is to remain connected here. We are here for you whenever you find some energy and want to come chat - never any pressure, just open arms 💜

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

@Flutterbug9 @Chasingsunsets @Jynx

Yes I am safe and not any immediate plans to hurt myself. I seek help because i have made promises not to hurt myself. I have a good & supportive team of MH GP + counsellor, but there is no immediate crisis support for de-escalation which also poses a risk of hypertensive crisis (blood pressure). So even sitting by myself until I am calm has a significant physical health risk (eg stroke, heart attack). We don't yet have a solution for this scenario; waiting for 30min+ to get someone to talk to (crisis lines, medical centres, etc) causes mental deterioration, which is the catch-22. And i may be "beyond having words" by that time, depending if I've been able to calm enough to reherse the conversation ahead of time or not.

If i need to vent i vent here.

Please don't think my absense is anything personal to any of you. My calendar is crazy and I need to take more "calm time" between tasks since coming off meds.(i.e. re-emergence of adhd symptoms). Life is crazy and stressful and I am trying to offload as much stress as I can to reduce the chance of meltdown-triggers.

A few people have asked how diagnosis feels/respond. It "explains" but it doesn't "solve". I have already been using all the techniques I have read/taught about since I was a teenager. Its just they thought it was "just depression" and didnt look for the root cause. Since I was a young teen I felt I wasn't made for *this* world like others seem to be, so yes @Jynx i do support the social model of disability (but note that even with social access and inclusion people can still experience debhilitating/distressing symptoms such as pain). The benefit of diagnosis is i can explain to others (doctors/supports) that i think differently and that they need to aware of that when i say something directly that I'm not meaning to be rude/abrupt, but that either i just dont know (or cant think in the moment) how to say it another way that would be understood enough but i *need* to let it be known. Too often in those situations I have said nothing, which has led to doctors not realising the severity of the situation because they didnt ask questions.

I have no problem with who i am as a person. I like myself. I like my brain - i like its quirks. I will always be myself because of this. Sure I have limitations and I'm not perfect - none of us are; we're humans. We're not *meant* to be perfect; that would be boring too if we were all perfect at everything. My self-image is one of my strengths.

@Flutterbug9 i don't want to remove notifications from you. I want to get to them eventaully, like all of the 150+ plus unread ones I have from the past month. It will just take me a long time. You are still important to me.

@AlwaysMyself My thoughts are would be beneficial to us both for you to clear all notifications from me prior to today and start moving forward from there. It’s up to you though

Re venting, I understand.

I understand about your accommodation, sorry to hear

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

@Flutterbug9 realising i dont think i remembered to respond to this part of your message on 21 March - sorry! (Its also possible i did, but that i have forgotten i did 😅 oh dear brain).

"I hear you with the masking and can empathise.

I have masked for such a long time I don’t think I know anything else anymore."

That sounds really hard, sending you a hug.

I wonder what the path looks like for you to finding out (*if* you want to!) what the "anything else" options are? 🤔

One thing i have come to realise/reflect this past week or two is how differently i perceive how other people "reason" in social/support decisions than me. But now i have been talking to my counsellor and support worker the past few weeks about why I don't ask for support (the mental barriers i have to it), the more they've been able to explain to me how *most other people* perceive things and encourage me in how I can communicate my needs in a way that will be understood by others but without my fears of how it will be received/affect others' decisions beyond how they want it to. (E.g. for me, not pressuring others is a *big* thing. I am always concerned people will feel obliged and not maintain boundaries where they want them to be. And this is because i have seen my mum not hold her boundaries where she wants them -- that was normalised to me, so i assumed that others must also do this too.)

I've found being able to talk about my internal dilemma with a trusted person has given space for them to give their perspective on which "risks" and barriers are a valid realistic concern and which ones are probably just me being *too concerned* that others wont hold their boundaries (eg new doctors/supports) until i have seen an example where they have held a boundary appropriately (i.e. shown not just said). And for me, i'm learning to verbalise these concerns to my doctors/supports that i *want* them to hold boundaries where they want to, because if i don't know they will then i dont feel able to be fully open with them.

@AlwaysMyself @Flutterbug9 @Jynx @AuntGlow @MissGremlin

Hello lovely how are you? I’m struggling to keep up with posts. Please do not think I don’t care. I do.

I’ve hit rock bottom. I’m struggling to get any supports and everyday I’m just trying to survive second by second. I have no more capacity to keep reaching out to services and crisis phone lines that can’t help me.

I saw neuro doctor who’s found some permanent brain damage and is doing further testing. It’s totally broken me.

I want to be engaged here but doing so has been so hard. I don’t want to be here just seeking support I want to give back to people too. I think the changes on the forums have also affected me and recovery club has not put in the daily webinars which I relied on so much. I’m shattered.

Please let me know how you all are. I know each of you is also going through a lot.
