Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Thanks for the update @AlwaysMyself

Good to hear you are getting the info.

makes sense the comment by @Jynx about today, I had no idea.

sounds like has been a very stressful, extremely busy week for you. Sorry to hear that.

I hear you with the masking and can empathise.

I have masked for such a long time I don’t think I know anything else anymore.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

@Flutterbug99 you are always welcome to jump into my chats here whether or not you are tagged directly 😊🥰 🤗 (and this goes for other readers too!). If I'm not OK with others commenting, then it wouldn't be something I would post 🙂.

"do either of you find part way through verbally mentioning something your mind goes off on a tangent? Either that or we’re going to talk about more than one thing and, after talking about the first one, find you have no idea what the other item/s were."

For me, 100% yes on both counts 😅. I accidently derail conversations so much; i try to be aware and when i realise i have done it i acknowledge, appoligise and ask if they want to return to the original topic 😅. Or, in the case of during an AuDHD assessment multiple times, "I've forgotten what the question was, but I thought that story was relevant. Was it? Did it answer what you wanted to know?"

And the one of multiple questions - if theyre written down i can check back to them to see if i have covered them. This is how I was able to do university because it was all written and thus "editable" with re-reading to make sure indidnt go off-tangent or miss out on specifics in the rubric.

How did this look for me in my AuDHD assessment? "I know there was a second part to that question. But I don't remember what is was. Can you please tell me again?"

I tell no lie, one of the times I did this the question eneded up having been about being able to remember, and another about being able to follow a series of instructions 😅.

Again, i need a friend who is a comedian to feed my life stories to! This happens *every day* *multiple times*. Plus all the autistic-thinking funny interpretations, plus a few other stories about what happens when *trying to access SI crisis/prevention suports* and those supports and unavailable/at-capacity (even if temorarily, if im in high distress). Being *more suicidal* from trying to access supports and not being able to - its a big problem for many people. How *I* respond to it (sometimes) can make for an ironic humour *in retrospect*.

I know i havent replied to all your posts yet, and I will eventually. 🙂

I'm down to less than 150 backlog of tag emails though lol.

But sometimes i may be more able to post about my updates (like last night) or a very short reply to a social comment, rather than having the time to respond to a complex topic. 😊

Is it better for you if I respond to a single part of a long post ("better than no reply") when able to only do a short one, or prefer me to wait until I can answer *the whole post* (whivh means I am less likely to forgot to answer something by mistake)? 😊

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

@AlwaysMyself I had no idea about the huge amount of tagged backlog posts, thanks for letting me know.

I will try to limit my tagged posts to you. I know this won’t be easy for me hence all I can say is, I’ll try. I know if I don’t write things down when they are fresh in my mind I’m likely to forget. It’s the way my brain works

one reply to encompass xx of post works well for me, depending on the size of the reply post. The huge update post on here recently I will read eventually by breaking it down into a few chunks. There are flow through negative impacts on me by me doing that ie overload, inability to take it all. Tbh, I don’t know if I will get back to read that huge post

thanks for asking, really appreciate it

On 2 different threads Jynx has been talking with you and me individually about very similar topic. Realising that I felt confused hence the couple of things I mentioned. My inner voice says if I’m not tagged in a post it’s for a reason hence I don’t read them (hope that makes sense)

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you?

Im so glad you had the aADHD assessment and that you are getting some really good insight and a diagnosis. I feel this is really going to be so helpful to you and to your recovery. I hope that when the report comes in there’s things in there that will assist you and give you further options too with mental health.

I understand what you mean by masking. Up until I got really sick I masked all the time. Now my body and mind just can’t do it so people see the complex PTSD, depression and anxiety and they don’t want anything to do with me. I’m not mean or nasty at all and also genuinely want to just be a good friend and enjoy some social time. Like you I do cry quietly outdoors and have panic. I never used to cry in front of people certainly not in public. But now things are different.

You had a lot of mental health appointments in one day. How do you feel today? You must be getting lots in place too for the trial. Has it so far gone well?

I have been worse than I’ve ever been. I am now in constant panic. Severe anxiety and no joy whatsoever. Everyday I want to come in forums and I can’t even muster that. So many things are going badly with life throwing curve balls that just won’t stop.

Have you put your car up for sale? You may have already sold it?

How are things at home? I know it’s been rough for you too.

@Flutterbug9 Hello lovely. How are you? I have no idea what’s going on as I’m struggling to be on forums.

@Jynx Hello to you too. How are you? Things have been tough for me.

Hi @Cuddlebear @Chasingsunsets

Long story short, if I could afford to pay the thousands of dollars I’d been getting assessment for Autism and ADHD done. I’ve done an online self assessment for Autism and that results really surprised me. It’s making huge number of things make sense.
I’ve had a good chat with my psychologist who is very supportive and easy to talk with. I’ve accepted offer from psychologist to work with them, discussing ways of coping (that I’m not already doing).

im going to accept offer from my psychologist which is for psychologist to write a letter to my psychiatrist so I can get help and support from both plus, if my psychiatrist does them, to have my psychiatrist do the assessments.

Talking about different things to my psychologist she said sounds like, due to all the things my brain says “I must do in one specific way” is causing, mental exhaustion which is linked to my emotional dysregulation.

self assessment questionnaires (I have done 2 different ones, each having different questions) with outcome clearly showing “significant Autistic Traits (Autism)”.

Hello @Cuddlebear - thinking of you. I'm sorry to hear you have been feeling worse than what you have ever been. Is there anything we can do here on the forums to make it easier?

In response to: Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

@Cuddlebear sending you extra hugs, and hearing that things have been continuing to decline for you. 😢. I'm very sorry, and I wish there was better and adequate support for you. I’m glad you are able to tell me though that this is the case. Your current inability to mask - I hear you. I am sensing that this is more of a “no longer able to mask” rather than a “conscious decision to not mask” from your examples given - but I also know this may be me misinterpreting it because of how I have also experienced the decline in ability to mask when under increased stress (noting that it is for me both a “I can’t any more” and a “I won’t any more because it makes it worse” situation). I am wondering which it is for you, or both?

Would you like to talk at all about the “curve balls” life is throwing currently? (if it would help you, that is! just an invite, no pressure to).

Are you aware yourself of what is triggering you anxiety & panic? (e.g. a common thing that happens - such as hearing a specific noise, or being disappointed in a person, or financial stress, or unmet support needs, etc etc these are just a few examples of what can trigger people’s memory or anxiety).

Today was a little easier because I had social support all day from friends, until night time. However now that I am alone I have tried to go to sleep 2 hours ago and I cannot. There is too much stress and too much on my mind, but I cannot do what I need to for them to unwind/calm because it is too emotionally difficult currently to do what I need to do my myself. Hopefully tomorrow (well, I guess it’s “today” since it’s after midnight now) I will be able to do it, but if I can’t sleep tonight then I won’t be able to regulate tomorrow either lol. However, last night I slept quite well (on my recent scale at least lol).

The car is up for sale, I did finally list it. It was very difficult and I cried when posting it. I want to sell it financially, but I emotionally don’t want to. It’s very difficult.

Home is … complicated. I am coping by avoiding mostly. The “safe” thing to do together it watch TV, but I have no interest or focus to do so whilst I am too stressed. But my dog has been very difficult when I am not at home (getting into things she previously has not shown any interest in - she must be bored? I did give her some food-toys when I knew I was going out for a long time, but I can’t do that everyday or she will get overweight. She has so many other toys plus my other dog to play with, but she likes novelty which is why she “investigates” things), and the other dog when he barks I am not coping with it. I might need to ask my ex to take them for a while until things settle. But then I want to still have access to them and company because they are also calming for me when they are calm and I can pat or hug them.

No news on the trial - other than I next see the therapist team in 2 weeks (and I’ve been officially accepted, in case you missed that part, I can’t remember sorry!). But things “kick off” more in late-April. I don’t know what to expect yet.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

@Flutterbug9 I am so glad your psychologist has been so supportive on the autism discussions & help, and my hope is that your psychiatrist will be too. 😊 My hope is also that you will be able to get the support and help you need from both of them - whether or not you end up getting a diagnosis (due to the financial costs; I agree - it is very expensive. Many people are not formally diagnosed for exactly the reason you have mentioned).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

Brief question @AlwaysMyself

when I post things to you, would you prefer I post on here only from now on?

Having read where you have mentioned your memory challenges, I’m wondering if that might (maybe) help with somethings. My thoughts including things of one less thread, easier to follow posts (possibly), easier to remember to tag me (so I get email notification for every relevant post)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warnng

Correct

one favour. If, like recently, you know you will snowed under with lots of known appointments etc for 2 wks, 4 wks (as examples) can you give me that timeline.

if mentioned a weekend, my brain registers exactly those words with weekend being Fri - Mon maximum
